Kahalani had nothing to do with infantry - he was a tankist. In the Yom Kippur War he commanded the 77th tank battalion - though his unit was far from complete. That said, his unit destroyed over 300 Syrian tanks. ...moreover, the battle in Sinai was never progressing better than that against Syria - both fronts were on the brink and in dire straights. Min. 19.50 ish - NO TANKS were transferred from Sinai to the Golan. The opposite is true. Israel finished off Syria after many casualties and bitter fighting and then transferred tanks to Sinai. Whomever wrote this documentary did not have the basic facts. This documentary needs some work.

We have such a small country and I practiced many times in the Golan heights with our unit. I could only imagine what it was like to be a soldier back then in the war. They did not stop them but they managed during the last phase of the war to bring more than 15,000 men to damascus and its vicinity between troops, armored units,... and the iraqi government at the time pressured to soviets to stop the israelis, no need to mention that the syrian command at the time refused to push with the arab forces on its territory, something that many baa'th members ( the ruling party in syria and iraq at the time) would later on reveal, as some syrian officials feared the growing strength of the arab forces on its territory and the rivalry it had with some other regimes, mainly jordan in the south ( after the war of 1970) so it refused to commit forces to their offensive.

A few interesting bits not really mentioned in this video: *The Syrian commandos taking over the mount Hermon outpost was actually devastating for Israel. That outpost is mainly used by the Israeli intelligence which is bad enough, but one military intel soldier who was captured knew A LOT about all sorts of Israeli operations & he broke before the Syrians even had a chance to begin torturing him - spilling EVERYTHING he knew. The other Israeli POWs - all of which were being regularly tortured, actually tried to have him killed to shut him up, until the Syrians separated him. Israel spent years scrapping operations & changing methods because of it. *Zvika Force - Zvika, a young Israeli officer in the 188th armored brigade spent 20 hours holding the line mostly with just his tank, during the initial Syrian push, while Israel was fighting a delaying battle until the reserves arrive. When his tank was knocked out, he switched to another tank & continued fighting. He called himself on the radio Zvika Force, in order to make the Syrians think they're facing a larger force. His tanks took out dozens of Syrian tanks during the battle. After the war he won the Heroism award - the highest military award in Israel. *The naval arena - while in the 1967 war the Israeli ground forces & air force performed brilliantly, the navy kinda blundered and as a result they made some serious changes between the wars. in 1973 the first 2 struggled, but the Israeli navy completely dominated the seas. This war actually saw both sides using surface to surface missiles & culminated in the battle of Latakia, which saw the Israeli navy attacking the Syrian port town, sinking naval ships & installations & forcing the Syrian navy to remain bottled up until the end of the war. *Outcome - part of the reason the Arabs celebrate the 1973 war, is that it was considered a disaster in Israel, which is not reflected in the videos. There was an intelligence failure in predicting the war & gauging the capabilities of the new Soviet made weapons used by the Arabs, which changed the battlefield, forcing the Israeli army to adapt mid war & change it's tactics. As well as the Israeli reservists being badly equipped. The casualties, close to 3000 KIA were disastrous in Israeli terms. There was a lot of public anger following the war & a committee was formed to study the failures during the 1973 war & how to correct them going forward. Mind you that the Arab outcome was far worse, though... As a side note, Israel & Syria are in a state of cease fire, not peace, as mentioned in the video. However, following the war Israel & Egypt did sign a peace treaty, with Egypt becoming the first Arab state to make peace & recognize Israel. Which is interesting, considering they were Israel's most powerful enemy & the driving force behind the previous 2 wars.

@@TheLocalLt Everything you said is correct except the state of Syria, I assure you we were NOT more technologically advanced than the rest, in fact we were one of the least advanced Arab ones, and our equipment (as relayed to me by several soldiers) is old Soviet crap, it's why when Russia entered its planes, the scales were tipped in our favor, before that Syrian airforce was outdated and in bad shape And I'd like to know how we were culturally advanced, do you mean progressive? We were on equal grounds in progressiveness with Egypt, Iraq, less than Lebanon, equal to Tunisia, Libya, Morocco and Algeria...and even that doesn't imply advancement as some would consider progressiveness as weakening and demoralizing, in contrast to strict religious doctrine which would work greater in war

As for OP, yes we treat it as victory (I don't) but not only because of what you mentioned (which is at best helpful propaganda for us) but because we considered Israel's giving up of territory as her being defeated, yes we are that desperate for a victory. Also it could be said That Assad blew his "victory" out of proportion to drum up his popularity among the people

@@TheLocalLt Well in that case Egypt too enjoyed local stability since 1973 until 2011, you might consider Sadat's assassination as destabalizing (which I wouldn't, Mubarak took controm straight afterwards) but Syria too went through a mini-civil war in 1982 against the Muslim Brotherhood, which climaxed in Hama's (not Hamas, I mean the city of Hama) brutal siege in which at least 30000 people died In most aspects I'd say we were on equal grounds with Egypt, we were probably more militarized than them, though during Assad Jr that militarization was reduced as Bashar leans more towards civilian life whereas his father was a military man

@@totalwartimelapses6359 what a fresh voice to come from the arab world. Indeed our political leaders always told us that now that we gave up territory they will want peace. yours told you you've won the war. Each gave his people their own brand of something to hope for, I guess. Unfortunately even the peace agreement with egypt was based on a fatwah given by the religious leader of Egypt ( sorry can't recall the name) that said peace with Israel is possible - based on the case of HudDaybia. Basically meaning a mock peace, to be broken at an opprotune moment when the enemy is weak.

an interesting detail about the war that was revealed only a few years ago (release of 1973 recordings) - the israeli cabinet (including former commanders responsible for successes in 1967) was extremely pessimistic and wanted to reach armistice asap, while the idf high command was reluctant and dismissive and continued the counter attacks

Well, the '73 war caught the Israelis pretty much off guard. The Syrians and Egyptians had done their prep work well and for the most part, their initial attacks we also well planned and executed. The Israeli reserve plan called for 24-48 hours to fully muster but much of it was accomplished in less than 12. When the plan starting to go a little different, the arabs couldn't figure out how to take back the initiative. In the Valley of Tears (I've never, ever heard it called the Vale before) there was once six Israeli tanks facing off against 150 Syrians. And when 30+ of the Syrian tanks were destroyed, they gave up even though only 2 Israeli tanks were left. Your enemy will always make mistakes so your plans have to be versatile enough to take advantage of them. Trying to follow some stupid time chart to the letter has never, ever worked out in war.

Nice summary the narrator would make a good play by play announcer. Always been following Israeli wars and I remember in some of the books on the 73 war, the criticism for the Zahal(IDF) was that they went into battle with tank units alone. A complete violation of the German-Guderian combine arms approach. Worthy of noting is that the northern command was headed by Maj. gen Hoffi, and the resident division was headed by brig gen Eitan both infantry paratrooper. In the south also Maj Gen Sharon a former paratrooper was the man of the match. These three came out of the war with their reputations intact. These infantry folks never charged into battle, they would scout out the area make a plan then commit into battle. Sharon would later criticize his fellow commanders in the south from Elazar the army chief, Bar lev the former chief, Gonen the southern front chief and Adan a division commander on " putting their faith in the qualities steel " instead of men. Sorry to bore you guys but I have always been an admirer of the military campaigns of this tiny middle eastern state.

@@Darduel That's why Dayan made him commander of unit 101 the retaliation unit and later the paratroop brigade 202. If you recall after the 1967 war when Israel captured the Sinai, Gaza strip, and west bank, there was a problem of terrorism from Gaza. In 1971 defense minister Dayan again called on his favorite Sharon to solve the Gaza issue. Against everyone's expectations Gaza became very quiet. Sharon war brutal but effective. And that in a nutshell was the Israel doctrine which was mostly authored by Moshe Dayan. He extends an olive branch, if you take it there is peace. If you reject it you get war and for the palestinians they discovered collective punishment I hate to think what would have happened to Gaza and Hamas if Sharon was still in charge. He pretty much ended their suicide bombing campaign, with assassinations of sheikh yassin the spiritual leader, and Rantisi the political head in early 2000s.

The Arab/Israel wars are interesting as they show how cultural differences can manifest in war. In Jewish culture the idea of the individual over all ensures that leaders are held accountable by the people and also by themselves. It is encouraged that you always look for the flaws in yourself in order to better yourself. This is a fundamental attribute of the Jewish culture that also exists in Judeo-Christian cultures. This is in contrast to Arabic culture where individuality is discouraged and people rarely see it useful to speak up against their leaders all while their leaders look to portray flawlessness and therefore look to hide their mistakes rather than learn from them.

What neither the Israelis and Arabs realized was military technology had shifted to favor the defender by the 1960s. The Royal Ordinance 105mm L7 had such excellent accuracy and penetration at long range that WWII style massed armored attack would inevitably suffer high losses. The Soviets had also developed the man portable Sagger missile which had even greater range and could kill any tank in existence with a higher hit probability than was initially believed. The result was very high losses among Israeli armor against the Egyptian position at the Suez. After the Yom Kippur War both NATO and the Warsaw Pact realized immediately unsupported armor attack is as dead as massed infantry attack in WWI. Tactics began to emphasize long range exchange of gunnery and using terrain to mask movement with the support of guided anti-tank missiles, artillery and aircraft. The Syrian army of 1973 wasn't very good, but at the same time they fought the way tactics of the time dictated.

Not exactly, while well fortified are a tactical advantage they are a strategic disadvantage. The Yom Kippur War taught the importance of mobility warfare, intelligence, and combined arms warfare to be emphasized in developing future battle plans. Being on the defensive (especially static trench defences) will be a far greater risk to the defender than it will to the attacker. The Gulf War the US put in place various reforms learned from the 1973 war, most importantly was the importance of speed and surprise in attacking Iraqi defensive positions.

@@Yitzhakhazak Soviet doctrine was not dig in and wait though. Theirs was one of offensive at all costs. This is because if they stopped they would be destroyed by superior NATO airpower. The Iraqis didn’t use Soviet doctrine. People have argued they used British doctrine, but with Soviet equipment, organization and training. The problem is the British doctrine depended on air superiority and very active patrols by armored reconnaissance vehicles. The Iraqis had no air cover and didn’t do ground patrols. So they were just sitting in the desert waiting and blind.

We saw how well the Defenders advantage worked for the Egyptians and Syrian's in 67. Personally I'd argue quite the opposite. For pretty much all of human history defenders have had the advantage with the Offensive side being only able to counter it with either overwhelming force via numbers or just vastly superior force tactically and quality wise. It wasn't until WW2 that we started the offensive side have some advantages with the highly mobilised armies of the Germans leaving stationary fort defenses largely obsolete. But even then the defensive side still definitely had the advantage as we saw in the Eastern front. But by the time the 50s and 60s came around the offensive side now had the advantage: they had their armies fully Mobilised while their opponents didn't, they had the ability to launch the first strike and they could hit their opponents infrastructure directly. In 67 Israel made perfect use of their offensive advantage by striking airbases and crippling Egyptian airforce. This made them have establish air superiorly by the first few hours of the conflict which then made them absolutely dominate the battlefield. In 73 the Egyptians and Syrian's failed to take advantage of their own offensive advantage which led to them having initial success but then being very vulnerable to Israel counter offensives

Less training, lower morale, overly rigid command structure that can't improvise in the field and can only follow orders from the top. The IDF always put emphasis on adaptive tactics and mobility. Interesting and showed some maneuvers I was unaware of. However, the graphics here do a *very bad* job showing the ridiculous scale of the army size discrepancies - You have battles like on Booster Ridge where literally 20 tanks held up 300 enemy tanks which were stuck behind the anti-tank ditch after the Israelis targeted their bridging equipment. Just imagine being on top of that hill watching a vast sea of enemy tanks train on you, so close to each other they had trouble rotating their turrets!! Also, you are missing other key terrain tactics which were highly important: the Israeli British-made tanks were able to ascend the western slopes of the Golan Heights shooting upwards while the Syrian T-55s could not fire at a downward angle to hit them without totally exposing themselves. Add to that crazy heroics from guys like "Task Force Zvika" who stopped entire armored columns with 2 tanks, single handedly destroyed between 20 to 60 enemy vehicles in 30 straight hours of intense fighting wherein his tank was damaged so he just commandeered another tank and kept going, rinse and repeat 6 times!! And on a strategic level, you missed 2 major points: 1) Due to the roads being deserted and all businesses closed on Yom Kipur including broadcast TV and Radio stations (everyone where at home or synagogues, easily reachable by landline phone and emergency broadcast radio) , Israel was able to mobilize reserves straight to battle in under 10 hours, much faster than the Syrians had expected and took them by surprise. 2) In a major fluke, Israel was able to airstrike the back of the Syrian logistic lines when inclement weather made the strike force abort its original mission of bombing the Syrian army command near Damascus (mainly for psychological effect), which was one of the reasons their advance was halted to regroup when they easily could have swept from the south.
