The trajectory of the 50-year-old Malaysia-China diplomatic relations has never been bump-free along its course. But it is the challenges that have kept bilateral ties resilient. During the three-year COVID-19 pandemic since late 2019, Malaysian NGOs, supported by Chinese entrepreneurs, spontaneously aided pandemic-stricken areas, leading to reciprocal support from the Chinese government with vaccines and medical supplies sent to Malaysia. This manifests a perfect match of the state-centric "Track 1 diplomacy" with the people-driven "Track 2 diplomacy" between the two countries when many other parts of the world were still grappling with trust deficit that hindered concerted human rescue endeavours. Obviously, state actors in some countries were still suffering from the Cold War mindset, characterized by the ideological schism that had once dominated the world order. In retrospect, half a century ago, then Malaysian prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein made a landmark move that took the world by storm when he visited Beijing at the height of the Cold War. His handshake with Chairman Mao Zedong made Malaysia the first ASEAN member state to reach out to China, that culminated with the fostering of diplomatic ties with the most populous nation of the time. The former Malaysian prime minister's move might have raised many eyebrows in the West, because the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, generally dubbed as a Western ally in the region, was widely expected to toe the West's line. Be that as it may, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein's bold yet visionary move was deemed consistent with the 1971 ASEAN Declaration of ZOPFAN, a foundational declaration seeking to create a "zone of peace, freedom and neutrality" in Southeast Asia, "free from any form or manner of interference by outside powers" in order to "broaden the areas of cooperation". Fast forward to 1991, Malaysia extended its engagement with China to ASEAN when it hosted the 24th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Kuala Lumpur where the Chinese foreign minister was invited for the first time. That paved the way for China to integrate with the bloc as the first dialogue partner, which later evolved into an ASEAN-China comprehensive strategic partnership in 2021. Prior to that, Malaysia and China had their comprehensive strategic partnership sealed in 2013, the inaugural year of the Belt and Road Initiative, which Malaysia was one of the first countries to join. "The good relationship between Malaysia and China is based on trust and respect which enables close cooperation in almost all sectors. "I hope the government will examine the results of this visit and take appropriate measures in the areas discussed including education, trade, investment as well as transport and connectivity," His Majesty told the Royal Press Office on Sunday (Sept 22). Sultan Ibrahim said China's rise on the international scene in the last 20 years is quite amazing. "The country has good examples for us to follow in the effort to restore Malaysia after the last few challenging years," said the King. In other developments, His Majesty also praised the stance taken by China, which opposes the inhumane actions of the Zionist regime against the Palestinian people.mSultan Ibrahim said Malaysia is in line with China in expressing solidarity on the issue of peace in Palestine. The King also expressed his appreciation to the Chinese government for the privilege accorded to his late son, Tunku Abdul Jalil, the Tunku Laksamana of Johor when receiving treatment in the country. "The Chinese government gave a special exemption to my son to undergo liver transplant surgery in China even though he was a foreigner. I will always be grateful for this," said His Majesty. In conjunction with the golden jubilee of Malaysia-China relations, Sultan Ibrahim expressed the hope that the relationship between the two countries will continue to be fruitful and close for mutual benefit. "The 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations is not only a highlight to celebrate but also an opportunity to strengthen cooperation towards a better future," said the King. Sultan Ibrahim left for home on Sunday, after completing a four-day state visit to China starting on Sept 19. It was also His Majesty's first visit to the republic after ascending the throne as the 17th King of Malaysia on Jan 31, at Xi's invitation. The state visit of His Majesty reflects the close bilateral relationship between Malaysia and China, which has been growing rapidly since it was upgraded to Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation in 2013. This visit is the first state visit by the King to China in 10 years, marking an important moment for both countries as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations. In 2014, the 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the late Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, paid a visit to China at Xi's invitation, in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of Malaysia-China relations established on May 31 1974. This visit is the second by His Majesty to a foreign nation, with the first being to Singapore on May 6 at the invitation of Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. - Bernama Visit to China a resounding success, says Sultan Ibrahim www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2024/09/22/visit-to-china-a-resounding-success-says-sultan-ibrahim My ultimate loyalty is tied to peaceful development in the region, with iron-clad commitments to long-term savvy diplomacy which will bring about the peaceful settlement of outstanding disputes, in the greatest interests of Malaysia and the broader ASEAN communities. This is not a zero-sum game. China had been our largest neighbor for thousands of years, with a credible track record of peacefully co-existing with Malaysia, long before Ming dynasty admiral Zheng He reached the shores of Malacca to further cement solid bilateral ties built on mutual respect between two countries. Not the United States. Not the West. Not even Japan could boast of such record. How can we depend on outside forces to secure our own sovereign security interests? This myopic approach is unsustainable, at best.
