What a gift to music and humanity unfortunately this sort of thoughtful mindful music is fading away. Im happy I'm old.

I never tire of this song. I can listen to it over and over. I always get a lump in my throat and it can still make me cry. It is so beautiful, haunting and bittersweet. Ritter isn't just an artist singing and playing his own guitar, he wrote the song as well. The lovely melody caught me first, then the lyrics, without TRYING to be clever, instead ruthlessly slices is open to the pain of our own love and betrayal. He does it with such disarming simplicity that it takes a moment to see he's torn out his own heart or soul and laid it out bare along side ours for all to see. We stand there, naked, exposed, hurt and humiliated; pretending that were fine, and we don't care because WE are far too clever to fall for that load of snake oil. I've built up my defenses, walls so high and thick that no one can get in and very little gets out. Everything that I associate with the risk of opening my defenses to another person, whether in friendship or dating; for those pursuits I have no interest. My walls are high and thick and there is no way in or out, just the occasional window 🪟 and the skylight above. My favorite stanza: "I had a dream last night And rusting far below me Battered hulls and broken hardships Leviathan and Lonely I was thirsty so I drank And though it was salt water There was something 'bout the way It tasted so familiar" A familiarity for anyone who has tasted tears when your spouse admits to cheating on you, in full and daily interactions with your co-workers and boss, just for starters. Lyle Lovett's Private Conversation, And the Police/Sting's Mad About You, Roxanne, Fields of Gold, Sheryl Crow singing You're My Favorite Mistake, certain singers covering, Someone To Watch Over Me, or Bewitched, Bothered, Bewildered,. These are all songs that I love, even if I refuse to allow "anyone to build this bridge, for I cannot fill this chasm, and let me set the battlements on fire." ... I had to stop my tracks for fear of stepping on the mines I laid... I'll choose to listen to brilliant music, even if it does make me cry, since that grief is far less intense and is fleeting as well.

I happened across this stunning song today, at the exact moment I needed it. I’ve always had great appreciation for real talent in music- I have little patience for lyrics that do not say something, do not make us feel something- because I’ve known so much genius like this. I stand in awe of the power of music to reach us, to open our hearts, to connect us, to heal us. To find those broken places & communicate to us that we are not alone. I needed these lyrics today- which are more like poetry. I am every line in this song. I am in the midst of such a violent, painful storm & I can’t see a way out. But I’ll keep swimming. It heals the weary & worn, repeatedly beaten soul, when a song like this reaches thru the universe to remind me that there are others who do feel as deeply as I, who’ve known this unyielding pain, who still find the courage to swim & discover new lands. And from them, reach out to those of us still being tossed amidst the brutal waves of heartache. Your words spoke to me. Just like these genius lyrics, they reached into my heart & whispered that I’m not alone. I hope this reaches yours. As cruel as love & life can be, I continue to be awed by the way the universe can connect 2 strangers in this way- people with the strongest walls preventing anyone from breaking thru in person- but a stranger can unknowingly tear right thru them & wrap their words around your heart, when you most need it. So thank you for opening yourself here. I so relate with your experience & your pain, with the fortress you’ve built as a result. I hope you find peace & love in your life- the kind that would never leave you alone in a sea of betrayal & heartbreak. You reminded me that I’m not the only one capable of that kind of love. There are some of us out here. I hope you find one you can let down the walls with & who rightfully cherishes the gift of your heart. At least, know that I cherish the gift- the piece of your heart- that you gave me today.

This guy is very interesting to me. As a complete hack here, it seems like he has a very nice voice... there's sort of a genius level simplicity to the music but then a rich complexity to the lyrics that seem to just flow in a stream of consciousness .... I think he's going to be a big hit.

I had a dream last night I dreamt that I was swimming And the stars up above Directionless and drifting Somewhere in the dark Were the sirens and the thunder And around me as I swam The drifters who'd gone under Time, Love Time, Love Time, Love It's only a change of time I had a dream last night And rusting far below me Battered hulls and broken hardships Leviathan and lonely I was thirsty so I drank And though it was salt water There was something 'bout the way It tasted so familiar The black clouds I'm hanging This anchor I'm dragging The sails of memory rip open in silence We cut through the lowlands All hands through the saltlands The white caps of memory Confusing and violent I had a dream last night And when I opened my eyes Your shoulder blade, your spine Were shorelines in the moonlight New worlds for the weary New lands for the living I could make it if I tried I closed my eyes I kept on swimming

A good friend turned me on to Josh Ritter. As a brand new guitarist, the songs are not overly difficult (the chord progressions are relatively easy), but the lyrics and way he puts the melody and harmony together is just amazing.

Quite possibly the greatest, woefully underappreciated & currently active, solo singer-songwriter of today's pop alt/soft rock/folk music generation. Sheeran is a truly great talent, but purposefully ubiquitous and studio filtered. Mumford's a collaborative effort and inconsistently productive. I could never imagine either releasing (or being allowed to release) a song they (or their studio) thought wouldn't be popular. Every song I've heard from Josh makes me feel like he wrote, recorded and released the song because he liked it and believed in it and felt connected to it. And that helps connect me to it. Change of Time is my favorite, I think the lyrics, musical progression and just the overall composition is genius (battered hulls and broken hardships, Leviathan and lonely / your shoulder blades, your spine were shorelines in the moonlight) Galahad maybe the best casual/effortless folk story I've ever heard sung. (How happy must be Angels thus employed/this seems more error than knight errantry) And New Lover, oof, that one can be painful (for accusing you of stealing what I offered you for free). There's so many more! Check him out

I know I may catch some heat for this. I never heard of this guy. I found this song because of Blacklist. That is why shows like that are good in some ways. They introduce people to music and artist they may not have heard of. And a lot of shows play those lesser know artist to help get them the exposure that mainstream radio doesn't give.

From: http: //www.metrolyrics.com/change-of -...]
