As a former 19D, the OH-58D was my most favorite air support while deployed in Iraq. They were always right there, like "duck down before the landing skid takes your head off" close. I can only describe Kiowa pilots as "insane manics" , but in the most endearing of terms. The most memorable moment with Kiowas is when we had to get to a crossing on the Tigris river to check a building, but the one of the Kiowas decided that they would just land and clear it themselves, and they did.

I was an Infantryman in Kandahar province with the 101st ABN during the surge. We were supported by a unit of Kiowas call sign "Long Knife". It's been said that ameteurs think about tactics while professionals think about logistics. The Apache is an absolute monster but didn't have the availability rate that the Kiowas had. Bottom line is I could count on the Kiowas to show up. Salute!

That’s really cool. Did the Kiowas have more time on station than the apaches, or were they cheaper to maintain and there were more of them? It’s a fascinating aircraft. I’m a fixed wing guy IRL but fly helos almost exclusively in DCS and will pick this up day 1.
@gradycdenton

@@nateweter4012 Kiowa is simpler with fewer parts so maintenance is easier. Time on station in my AO was actually less than the Apache due to high & hot conditions. The Kiowas flew both reduced ammo and reduced fuel capacity to maintain flight performance. However, we compensated for that by having a FARP at the local FOB so they could refuel, rearm, and return to the fight without leaving the AO. So in summary, the Apache is a much more capable platform but a Kiowa overhead is more helpful than an Apache in the hanger!

I will never meet the guys but in Iraq in 2006 a Kiowa pilot provided air support when we were being shot at by the enemy. I got to watch them rain down rockets on the target to save our rear ends. Thank you guys for doing what you do. Retired EOD here.

Retired Army here, and former 11B. That last statement about 11Bs gravitating to the 58s was a great way to end the discussion. I think that general sentiment is the same as most Soldiers feel about the A10s, and the general reaction we/they have every time the AF talks about getting rid of the A10s. Ground combat can be a lonely experience, and the simple act of SEEING someone else participate, providing persistent support (A10s, 58s, occasionally 64s) seems to create a special, if one-way, affection that doesn't develope between, say, an infantryman and his organic artillery support for example. Probably because that artilleryman is miles away, unseen, unheard. It's a very interesting phenomenon

I can't even imagine the difference in boost the ground guys get from knowing they've got something like an F-16 flight overhead, but barely visible, to seeing and hearing an A-10 creep over a hillside and then come back around for a gun run.

I had NEVER seen this helo before I went on deployment to Afghanistan in '09. I was a Navy submariner on an IA billet and I found myself in the middle of mountains on a FOB overseas (talk about out-of-place!). I remember flying in from Kuwait and the FIRST aircraft I saw when we hit the tarmac was this funny-looking helo with this weird bulb on top of it. I joked to some one that it looked like it had a great idea with that radar mast but didn't know until a month or two later, what a badass helo it was. Whenever the Taliban launched rocket attacks, these seemed to be the first aircraft to lift off and go flying in the direction of the insurgents. I've been a fan of the Kiowa ever since.

Great video guys! Thank you! Learned a lot! A few days ago was a one year anniversary of the CROAF Kiowa crash. Our pilots crashed in the Adriatic Sea on their way to support special forces in exercise, unfortunately losing their lives. Here in Croatia we are really proud to have this badass helicopter. Our pilots finally got some small but powerful addition to our rotary component. Next on the way is new UH-60M which should replace our Mi-8MTV1. We really love the Kiowa, we originally ordered 16 of them and additional 10 are on their way as well. I'm glad that our Kiowas got some eyes from US on them, it's a shame that they didn't get well deserved modernisation... Anyway, thanks once again, keep uploading video like this! Nice! So much valuable background info. Just one comment on DCS. Actually the first model with the advanced physics was the "DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark", back in the days. Prior to that we had "Lock On: Modern Air Combat" and "Flaming Cliffs", but these had a very different flight modeling approach. The Ka-50 required a complete new way of modeling aerodynamics, and AFAIK it was the first Simulator to have authentic VRS, retreating blade stall, blade/rotor disc dynamics etc. So this helicopter was actually the foundation for DCS, as we know it...I remember when with "Flaming Cliffs 2" there was the first time to the possibility of Multi-Player with the Black Shark AND Flaming Cliffs aircraft in the same "simulated world"... 😍

X-Plane does all that stuff since 9, though IMO the RBS is kinda weak still even when it is worked into it, not to mention most blade and engine models are often not quite the right balance to get good RPM effects in most X-Plane helos. I mean, you can hear the RPM effects and see the gauges, but usually there's not a huge effect on lift or rotor health when they go into an extreme situation unless you're in autorotation. EECH has VRS and RBS, but no RPM effects except on a recent mod/hack that basically broke a bunch of other stuff on the flight model if you turn RPM effects on -- FM 02 in the ini. I mostly just use FM 01 in EECH now and give up the imperfect automated coordination of the turns. FM 00 is too lite and FM 02 is too heavy feeling, IMO. Janes Longbow had some RPM effects but none of the other stuff. Longbow still has the best replica of a Comanche-style AFCS, though, but obviously used because people were expected to be flying with a joystick rather than a real pole cyclic. IMO still probably the best control technique for a home helo computer game, though. You can sorta kinda get the Janes Longbow RC/AH system in EECH with PPJoy+GlovePIE... and add pedals that Janes LBA requires some serious utilities to hide controllers from the game to do. This GlovePIE scripting also works for FSX for dynamically trimming pitch with a joystick. X-Plane actually has a check box in Special Equipment for auto loading of pitch trims you can use in conjunction with trim ranges to get a similar style of dynamic pitch trimming without the need for PPJoy+GlovePIE scripting. X-Plane also has a helo trimmer available now and a really good WL AP mode & CWS button assign that can do the same thing for those that want to hold a button, move the stick, and release manually.

Found myself here again from a link posted in the PC discord. At the end, we mentioned the KW had well over 2M flight hours across the fleet, with over 830K of those in combat. With a fleet of 368 aircraft, of which only about 320 remained towards the last few years, that's around 2600 hours in combat (averaged) for each airframe... Those hamsters in the back must've been worn-out by then.. Of course, there's a whole new generation of pilots flying these in new units now. Lucky bastards.

Gunship! very badly implemented the latter in a sim with a very bad, gamey flight model and weapons implementation but awesome graphics with a believable FLIR. RIP Microprose. Something about the "seat of the pants", that's something that's really interesting when talking to guys who "only" flew for real and others who fly simulators primarily, and that's a sensory thing. I flew sims for decades (fixedwing) before I flew a R22 for the first time. For me, flying a sim is very very close to flying for real, as my primary sensor is just optics. If things in the sim look the same as in the real world, I can use it vice versa and when I started taking lessons on Robinsons, my simming improved, and by training the stuff in the sim again, my real world flying improved. Something I think you should keep in mind when it comes to the "it's impossible to simulate it because it's seat of the pants". :)

I think flying sims first translates easier to flying for real than the opposite. I spent YEARS flying sims before I went to flight school and things like control touch and air sense were much easier for me to grasp than guys who didn’t have the same back ground. I flew many hours in janes longbow and other helo sims years before I broke contact with the earth in a Jet ranger and when I went back to the sims years later I had a new appreciation for the proprioceptive system and it’s impact on rotary wing flight. it actually made me worse in the sim cause I wasn’t getting the same feedback anymore that I had grown accustomed to. This is mainly at low speeds and hovering. Sims have a long way to go before that catch the nuance but I think things like VR and pedals can help a lot.

I think it translates a little bit of that seat-of-the-pants feeling into the simulator, albeit of course artificially and in a way that's different of how a real aircraft would feel. You can for example dial it in so that you feel ETL happening in helicopters, or you feel high AoA in the F-18.

The shark is really tough to employ in DCS with how clunky the EO sensor system is. The trimming system ED is using on it also leaves a lot to be desired. The DCS helos, even the shark and huey, seem to require still slightly too much nose down to maintain speed and also bleed speed too rapidly on nose up when it should be maintaining speed more and gaining altitude without you also lowering collective. Improvement in that over older combat helo sims, but X-Plane seems to do this better. I do not think DCS has pulled off an effective and convincing yaw damper, either. I also found the gazelle to be a bit of an unstable nightmare compared to X-Plane's even with no art stab activated. I disagree with some of the people who've said the DCS helos need to level out more when you take your hand off the stick, though. If I've manually trimmed out the roll moment on my throttle thumb rotary after getting into translational lift, I find this basically the same on DCS as X-Plane (albeit me hat trimming in XP), and when in a hover the tilt back to level doesn't seem that bad at all. Even with adjusting my control sensitivity, the 8 and gazelle, though, seemed to be a excessively wobbly mess in DCS unless you're deep into forward flight. I'd much rather fly around in X-Plane with its 8 and gazelles, and even the X-Plane sharks feel nicer if you cut your pedals by half their range to compensate for the huge yaw capability coaxials in X-Plane give you. I'm still looking for a sim that will do the above right, and model rpm effects on the lift, RBS, etc, that even X-Plane doesn't completely cover sufficiently for rotorcraft. EECH does overt RBS, but not rpm effects well enough yet. Longbow 2 did rpm, at least on the low end from overpitching, but no VRS or RBS.

@@CasmoTV He was involved from the very beginning with the Kiowa - even before it was armed. He retired just before they unfortunately decommissioned the Kiowa. I believe the last 3 or 4 years of his career he was in Standards. He played a big part in setting up the stinger training shoots down in FL. I just happened across this video and heard the mentioning of Fort Rucker. Looks like a great game and enjoyed the video! Brought back a lot of memories of seeing my dad fly and visits to the flight line.

Another goodie mate. Ain't got DCS, ain't got any access to Helis but listening to this kinda makes a man want to... just sayin'... By the way, just a quickie but being a natural drummer and ergo used to doing four different things with all four limbs, would this count as a possible potential advantage?!!

So what chopper replaced the 58 if it was basically retired in 2014? The interest is there because the majority of us were not able to be an actual flier for various reasons. This is as close as we can get. Hearing the stories of real pilots like you guys is how we can imagine living vicariously through you.

@Zeb I think I still got a spare Quickshot Pro somewhere in the attic... :D But well, the wayward simmer should definately go for an MS FFB2, a decent throttle unit and some pedals, especially when it comes to flying helos in DCS. And flying in VR does quite a lot. When trying to hover a Huey over the apron, I was all over the place... when I first tried it in VR, I actually was able to hover taxi along the lines out of a sudden.

at 1hr10m, talking about guys not using things like digital spot report... that feels like it could be the subject of a whole genre of military-humor comic pages... there were times that i felt like if the firearm were invented today, that the average US soldier would play with it for five minutes, then say "fuck it, i'll keep using my spear"
