I think the drinking is more because he knows that's pure heresy and abhorrent. He did say he prefers to be drunk while fighting.

Why would he not be. He killed Cliff's wife, made him think his daughter was dead, mutated Rita and Larry and if this show is anything to go by also killed Cyborg's mom.
