Very inspirational. In a nutshell: From a distant village, an SC (Dalit), father dead early in childhood, no education, sang in road side troupes, came to madras at age 25, suffered hunger and poverty, learnt C-major at age 27, atheist, played combo-organ, guitar, learnt Western Classical with hard work, learn Carnatic so late in life, the struggle and desire and ambition to become a composer, mixing music genres like no other, made tamils forget hindi music (in late 70's RD burman was ruling the roost), fused folk, carnatic, western classical harmonies and syntheisiers, discovered faith in God through mookambika amma, wrote love letters to his wife, gave human emotions a form through his BGM, very intense, worked at 50 moves per year with the huge orchestra, immaculate discipline, perceived as arrogant (tell me how you will create live music with huge orchestra EVERYDAY without discipline and without shoutings), helped so many in need (through his wife), a lyricist, a photographer, who is self aware (quote: "I'm a saleable commodity now. People like my music, I'm here. If they don't , I won't be there") and who doesn't have any filters when he talks.(It could be brutal honesty or unnecessary arrogance. ) His life is like no other. Hard work, self belief, shattering traditions and conventions on the way, is indeed inspirational to many. His life journey till 1985 will make a great TV series.

IlayaRaja when first came to Madras,they have no money to eat that night. Bharathi Raja,to whom to meet they came gave them one rupee and with the one rupee they bought idlis and filled their stomach that night. In his initial days in Madras when they were short of money, they waited at temples for Prasadam to fill their hunger. I had a room mate in early nineties, whose sister was a nurse in Kuwait was relative to IllayaRajhas elder brother, Bhaskar.

Oka Small correction Kiran garu: She was never given any song annaru kadha. Actually both of these instances were of same person. It was LR Eswari. She was actually given one song. One and two Cha Cha Cha. When others asked why he gave her a chance to sing when he doesn’t like, he said, “She will never know what it means to not sing for Ilaiyaraja unless she knows what it means to sing for Ilaiyaraja”. There is another instance : Machane Pathingala was supposed to be sung by LR Eswari. She said she won’t sing for petty music directors like this. So he asked Janaki garu. She happily agreed and said that he would definitely become a good music director in the later days. He liked her humility and this is precisely why he rewarded her so many songs despite Susheela garu reigning the era with mass songs and Janaki garu was limited to Classical stuff. It was he who redirected her career. Although Janakamma once said that she won’t agree for that statement that Raja helped her.
