For many years, an unfortunate mix-up led many fans of his performance to think Mewtwo's legendary first voice had passed away, but this video details the story of his experience on the hit Anime franchise, his departure from it and how the mistake happened in the first place! Plus, the famous 150th Pokemon actually has many OTHER legendary voices you might be surprised to learn some interesting facts about!

Mike Donovan would be easily recognized if you grew up with TAoSTH as he was the fast talkin, Phil Silvers imitating, Con man with a gold heart Wes Weasley. But if you also know your Animation history and are familiar with the first ever full CGI show he was in ReBoot too as the wise yet goofy Phong the Command.Com of Mainframe alongside fellow AoSTH alumnus Kathleen Barr who filled the role of Command.com in military matters Phong was a adviser and more like a Mayor in his role. Phong's character was made in the image of old Chinese styled wise mentors like Mr. Myagui but not so stereotyped as one might would guess in a Western Animated show of the 90s. Phong was subtle and very goofy as well as his public leader nature and Phong also knew many proverbs from reading but often had no idea what it meant beyond the core lesson. So he tell you to something like "Friendship is best mended by Apology or Tragedy." He understands forging a friend will heal their moods if they have a tiff, and knows teaming up to save someone can show how close they are to each other, but he has no idea how to implement the proverb to achieve it's moral of True friendship cannot be destroyed only cracked apart and will need to mend.

It's a shame that Jay Goede had to turn out to be "that guy" initially. That guy who thinks he's a "serious actor" and someone who is beneath animated work and apparently was by his own admission, a prima-donna about the whole thing. I mean at least it's good that he owns up to it now, and seems apologetic about it after realizing how important that Pokemon and especially that character was to a lot of people who go through their own identity crisis questioning their place in the world. I know to MANY people, Mewtwo was a very inspirational character to a lot of young kids in that movie, and i'm at least glad that he understands, now. But I would like it if someday he's able to apologize to the people that no longer work at that defunct company for being such a "pain in the ass" to them. But I guess we'll just have to take what we can get, in that he's remorseful about it, now.

Ah, what a mystery for the ages. Ichimura was going through stomach cancer-related stuff, but since then has gotten better and back into the acting scene. Apparently, according to sources like Dogasu, Ichimura may be reprising the role of Mewtwo, so maaaaybe they'll get Jay Goede, or even Dan Green for the dub. Either one is fine by me, really!

I hope that someday we get to hear Jay Goede again in the role. First of all, I can't imagine a voice company holding a grudge for such a long time and secondly, with the voice directors being completely different people, who probably weren't involved in the original recordings, I can't really see what the issue is.

What I find interesting is the fact that the guy named Philip Bartlett who died in '01 was apparently born in 1902. What this means is that people really thought that Mewtwo was voiced by a 97 year old man, which is just funny

Jay Goede's performance is one of the reasons that Mewtwo became my favorite Pokemon, so when I was on a Poke kick back in 2016 for the Anniversary, I was ECSTATIC to learn that he was alive and well. I hope TPCI knocks it out of the park with the casting for the English version of the new Mewtwo movie (sequel/remake/whatever) as it'll be REALLY HARD to top Jay Goede for me. (I would accept Dan Green reprising from Returns.)

Jean-Marc Delhausse voiced Mewtwo in the French dub aswell for being the French Pokémon announcer and Professor Chen / Oak. Not only he voiced Lucario in Lucario & the Mystery Of Mew, but Jean-Marc also reprised his role as Lucario and the Smash announcer in French. So yeah similar to Masachika Ichimura as Japanese Mewtwo in both The First Movie and Super Smash Bros Melee.

Smash 4 they just didn't bother, Mewtwo's voice in that game was the late Keiji Fujiwara, who only plays him here and via recycled voice lines in Ultimate.

Since legendary pokemon have no gender and cannot produce offspring (EXCEPT for Manaphy and it's phiobe), mewtwo's gender voices do still make sense, although striking for older fans at the time. It would be nice if they explained it, if just briefly why their voices change. Maybe have a legendary pokemon say "We can change our voice, tone and accent on whim when we want; if we want a change or to appear more threatening, friendly or just get bored of a voice." Which would likely make everyone happy since it means all voices are canon :D

In fact in one episode of Black & White, he was tricked into thinking that a male Purrloin was female. He also tricked Ash's Oshawott into thinking the same and it wasn't until the end of the episode where the trainer came clean about her Purrlion's gender.

Except he's not. Literally no one, dub, sub or manga, calls the Pharaoh's spirit "Yu-Gi-Oh"(the only time I can think of off hand is during the transformations when the audio says 'yugioh!'). If anything, it would be a title, since it's a play on the words Yugi oh, which means 'Game king' (or king of games). Cause by that logic, Yusei (and to some extent Judai) could arguably be called "yugioh".

I'm going through the entire yu-gi-oh series of anime right now and I could swear on my life, that the pharaoh at one point refers to HIMSELF as "yu-gi-oh". It's during one of the first seasons when Yugi and him are speaking through the puzzle and Yugi asks what his name is. His response is something along the lines of "some people have called me 'yami' or 'yu-gi-oh'".

I just checked and, it's a dub line. 100% pure dub line. And god knows the dub is horrifically inaccurate. I even checked the scene (it's in episode 41 if you're that curious, just before they leave Duelist Kingdom) in the subbed version to be sure, and the line does not exist. The conversation between them is totally different (it's about how the victory isn't just theirs-Yugi's and his-but everyone's and how they couldn't have done it w/o their friends, Yugi never asks for his name in the sub). And despite that line in the dub, no one ever calls actually calls him Yu-Gi-Oh. The dub refers to him as Yami and later on Pharaoh, but that's it. In the sub (and the manga) he's "other me" to Yugi and "other Yugi" to everyone else (unless you're Kaiba who just keeps calling him Yugi as he does not give a fuck apparently). I have literally watched the entire series subbed and dubbed, I do in fact have 'all the facts'. And the facts are, "Yu-Gi-Oh" is not his name and has never been his name except to parents who don't care to learn the character's names. Yu-Gi-Oh is at best, a title because, as I said, it is a play on words that means 'Game King' (or King of Games). Edit: It's also worth noting that the dub line doesn't even make sense IN context. The dub line is- "I've been called many things throughout the ages. Pharaoh, Yu-Gi-Oh! I've been known as Yami." Which makes no sense as he was trapped within the puzzle for the last 3000 years and Yugi is quite literally the first person he's talked to since getting stuffed in there. He can't be "called many things throughout the ages" cause no one knew he existed up until Yugi solved the puzzle.

I will say though that three years after making my comment, I actually like female Mewtwo now😊. I’ve realised that the only reason I’ve been hating on it for so long was because I was looking at it through the lenses of my nostalgia goggles. Mewtwo Strikes Back was my gateway drug into Pokémon which was why I held Jay Goede in such high regard as the one and only guy that can voice Mewtwo. I actually didn’t like Dan Green as Mewtwo either at first 😅. I see female Mewtwo and Dan Green Mewtwo in a new light these days and now I like every version of Mewtwo😊. You know, I didn’t even take into account that Jay wasn’t even Mewtwo’s original voice actor if you count Masachika Ichimura, his Japanese voice actor. One thing that helped me to appreciate the other voices of Mewtwo was Detective Pikachu. In that film, Mewtwo is voiced by a man and a woman simultaneously. I think that’s pretty genius😊 since Mewtwo is genderless. It also makes it sound more alien than it has done in the past, which makes sense considering that Mewtwo looks pretty alien. It might even be more alien than Deoxys.

Actually, I take it back. Not the female Mewtwo part. I still like female Mewtwo. I mean the nostalgia goggles part. I don’t think it’s a bad thing if you don’t like a certain version of a character, e.g. a female Doctor(Doctor Who) or gay Venom(Venom: Let Their Be Carnage), because it’s not what you’re used to. At the time, I didn’t like Miriam Pultro as the voice of Mewtwo because I wasn’t used to Mewtwo having a female voice and there’s nothing wrong with that. My opinion simply changed over time, but even if it never did, I still wouldn’t be wrong for disliking female Mewtwo-or Dan Green Mewtwo for that matter-because I could only hear Jay Goede as the voice of Mewtwo.
