To shed some light about this song, it is about one of the islands of Kiribati called Marakei. I can only tell you what the song means from my inference based on the lyrics and also what I know about the history of the island and the customs of the people of that island. I am sure that the islanders themselves and certainly the composer himself (or herself) can help you better in explaining the meaning of this song. Kiribatese composers are keen in providing lyrics that mean one thing but hide the true meaning of their songs for many reasons. Marakei is an island in the northern part of the Gilbert group. There are 16 islands in this group. Kiribati locals always classify people from these islands as belonging to the Northern group (Makin, Butaritari, and Marakei), to the Central group (Abaiang, Tarawa, Maiana, Abemama, Kuria, and Aranuka), and the Southern group (Nonouti, Tabiteuea, Beru, Nikunau, Onotoa, Tamana, and Arorae). In true geographical terms, the Northern group tends to receive a lot of rainfall so vegetation tends to grow very well there including traditional food crops like "bwabwai" (related to taro), pandanus, and of course, coconuts. The Central group tends to receive average to good rainfall so crops grow reasonably well there but not as well as in the Northern group. The Southern group, on the other hand hardly receive any rainfall so crops do not grow so well on those islands. The people of the Southern group always claim they are from the land of men. Maybe because life is hard there and you have to be a tough man to endure the hardships of feeding your family. This song is worded in a way that to any listener, the people of Marakei island are boasting about how their island was and still is desired by men as it is claimed to be "an island of ladies" ("abaia te nan aine"). The other two islands are claiming that title too. In this song they claim something else unique to their island. Let me tell you a famous and true story or history that happened more than 300 years ago. Once upon a time, two famous warriors from Beru (in the Southern group), Kaitu and Uakeia, set up a warring party from Beru and Nikunau and invaded their Southern neighboring islanders. They then proceeded to attack all the islands in the Central group. During these invasions, some tried to oppose the invasion but were unsuccessful. There were those who managed to escape using their canoes. These warriors also conquered the Central group. They then started their campaign to invade the Northern group. They first started by landing on the island of Marakei. But something strange happened there and they never ventured to attack the other two islands. In the lyrics of this song, a claim was made that these warriors were welcomed by four beautiful ladies who possessed strong magic and that they pacified these warriors. They stopped their war there and never ventured further north. The people of Butaritari were ready with their war party to confront these warriors but Kaitu and Uakeia stayed a short while on Marakei and then turned back southward. Cheers!🤔🤔🤔

Bonita Martin I love this song but I am not from this wonderful island. However, I have been there and received warm hospitality from Antaai village people. So this song reminds me of those wonderful people! By the way, they have a great village anthem they often sing in the maneaba to their iruwa! The people from Rawannawi village were also great.
