In Metallica Cliff and Kirk complimented each other’s style so much. Cliff’s bass lines and solos blended with Kirk’s solos and riffs like no other. For me this was the heart of early Metallica, their melodies and harmony are just sublime. James riffs are legendary of course, as can still be heard today. However, the bass and the solos just aren’t quite the same as they used to be. R.I.P Major Rager you still impact the lives of people and are missed by so many still to this day.

I've been pondering on that a bit, lately. It's insane how quickly Metallica went from the "Power Metal" demo to Ride the Lightning. And Cliff's other stuff, like the Maxwell Tapes (highly suggested, if you appreciate noise music or industrial along the lines of Throbbing Gristle) was very loose and disorganized, although superb if you dig that kind of experimental music. I think Kirk really helped him direct his expansive musical knowledge, both as a student and collaborator, in a way other people never quite did. James Hetfield, too, though I think Kirk and Cliff definitely had a special bond both professionally and as friends. They were the two guys in Metallica who would trip on acid together; Kirk has spoken about Cliff's regular use of psychedelics, and it's kinda weird, but if you view Metallica during the Cliff era through the lens of psychedelic rock it actually makes a lot of sense. But they kinda kept that hidden from Lars and James. They became much more mechanical for Justice, not that I have anything bad to say about Justice, it's just that the psychedelic aspect was gone, though I figure Kirk continued to carry the torch; maybe Jason did too, but I've never read or heard anything about him using psychedelics, and though it wouldn't surprise me, he was not given the opportunity to influence Metallica anywhere near what Cliff was, unfortunately.

Cool to hear stories about Cliff and he was most definitely a badass and will always be remembered and missed like Hendrix.. he changed metal forever and helped forge a new genre now called Thrash. His death changed the trajectory of the band as well as how the electric bass is played in metal today. Regarding the headbanging thing... it does go back a bit further than 1979.. just look at old Sabbath footage with Ozzy & Geezer or old Zeppelin shows with the front row audience is headbanging like they're at a Maiden show well before 1979.. you can even see it in some old Jerry Lee Lewis videos although a cruder version could still be called headbanging.

Has been in the band for quite awhile now and it’s his leading them that’s very important to be cherished for lead guitar playing. Kirk is my favourite guitarist. His been along for the ride into now 40 years of MetallicA’s musical contributions. The band is exactly one freight train that keeps going down the rails. It’s great to hear history from their early and humble beginnings. Love it. I have the year and a half in the life of MetallicA..both parts. I treasure my precious VHS 📼

Man, this could be a friggin' movie. I wish someone would make that movie, but actually do it real justice. I would expect to be disappointed by any movie about the early days of Metallica. Really, it should be about the early days of the Bay Area metal scene; Exodus was HUGELY important to the development of American thrash, and remained a vital thrash band through to the present day.
