Actually, the Wesendonck Lieder predate the composition of Tristan by several years. Wagner considered this song and "Traüme" to be "studies" for the opera he was later to write. What is more important is that these are the fruits of his love affair with the married Matthilde Wesendonck, who wrote the poems. The orchestration is not by Wagner, but by conductor, Felix Mottl,

these deccas were fantastic--and nothyng today beats them. yo're problem is listening with a tin ear to internet and not with proper accoustic recording. if yu head this decca as it really sounded on accoustic player which it was designed, it would blow your mind. what you want is something sterile

In fact, this piece found it's way into Tristan as the Prelude to the Third Act. Though it is purely instrumental in the opera it loses none of it's beauty or meaning.
