I use Strathmore 140-305 500 Series Ready Cut Watercolor Paper, 140 lb. Hot Press & Cold Press (it's 100% cotton) for my wet mediums and for drawing I just use Strathmore's standard sketch books. I've recently just started playing with Yupo paper, too, but it's kind of weird.

I have been experimenting with Black paper. Colors that look very weak on black will show up very well on black paper, like neon colored pencils. To sketch with you need to invest in some type of erasable colored pencil. I suggest colored mechanical pencil leads in lighter colors like pink or orange. They work as well as a regular pencil lead bit they show up much better on black paper.

There are a lot of paper types out on the market. My go-to sketching paper is Strathmore (toned & white) paper. However I've been really into Canson paper for sketching too. Their mixed media paper is very nice. And just recently bought watercolor paper that was on sale in my art store.

On a budget here, so my sketchbooks are generally a lighter weight paper - so more pages at a given cost. However I don't go down to anything flimsy, so there's still a limit in that regard. And my own preference is for the finer tooth smoother paper as well. However I'll still get some Bristol board, I often just use a sheet with the heavier stock for a backing to the page I'm currently using in one of the more inexpensive sketchbooks. (Less poking into the page while drawing with a harder backing, and if using ink or markers it handles any bleed-through as well.) Occasionally I might have a project for the Bristol board itself, but I tend to do more rough drawings than not. So it's like a sacrificial page or two for the other sketchbooks, and then the rest is saved for something more special in mind.

My favorite for colored pencils is strathmore 400 series colored pencil paper. I use it for graphite and charcoal too. It handles gamsol pretty well which is what I use, but I don’t soak the page with it. So depends how much solvent you use
@BabySquirrelBeading6 жыл бұрын
I use the solvent method. I currently use watercolour paper with a lot of tooth and texture. I was wondering if I should be using something smoother. Your review has given me some direction. I should say that the texture gives the pet portrait a canvas look that is very beautiful.

I enjoyed learning about your choices for paper. It's given me some things to keep in mind should I want to expand my paper knowledge. For pencil and ballpoint pen, I use a 75 page sketchbook I bought at Target for less than ten dollars. For watercolor, I use Canson's 140 pound watercolor paper that I bought at Wal-Mart for pretty cheap. I own a toned grey Strathmore sketchbook, but I haven't used it much. The paper's very big and it feels like a bit commitment to draw something in it. I can't remember off the top of my head, but I think my big, black sheets of paper are also Strathmore brand.
@trublgrl6 жыл бұрын
There is a great benefit to using very common artist materials, particularly Strathmore papers. These products are consistent no matter where you buy them, they are available everywhere, and they remain available for LONG periods of time. Strathmore 300 Plate Bristol today is the same as it was fifteen years ago. It will behave the same and give you consistent results for years. Arches paper, Staedtler and Caran D'Ache products are consistent beyond one's own lifetime, so you never really have to struggle with inventing new methods to achieve the same results. Nothing is worse than getting substantially into a drawing and realizing "This paper doesn't erase clean like the one I used to use", or "This pencil smears more than I want it to." Thanks for posting another great video.
@goilo8886 жыл бұрын
True enough. And artists do notice these things. Fabriano Artistico started taking some heat in 2016 or so when that paper's surface changed - "Fabriano Paper Mills have won a contract to produce a new paper. This means they've changed the settings on the machine which produces the new paper AND the fine art watercolour papers..."

I learned the hard way about smooth Bristol and solvent. I've been able to use a little bit of solvent with smooth Bristol, but I had an area I has not happy with and I purposely used too much thinking I could lift most of the pigment without damaging the tooth. It did not work. I couldn't get anything down on top of it. If you're in the US - Blick sells Fabriano 25% cotton hot press watercolor paper under their Blick Studio label. So, budget Fabriano! Doesn't 300 gsm equal to 140 lb? The strathmore paper is really confusing me with this, because I also have some Mixed Media paper and it’s definitely thicker than 300 gsm... But on the cover it says ”300gsm (184lb)”... Is that some American - European difference?

g/sm is not just gramms, it's gramms per square metre*, the imperial system has both different weight measurements and lengths so I would assume that lbs is measured by square foot or some weird stuff like that. *g=gramm(s) s=square m=metre(s) g/sm is thus gramm(s)/square metre(s)

I don't suppose you rate/recommend the Crawford & Black 130 gms cartridge paper sold in a certain book discounter. I'm finding it...okay BUT I can't seem to get a very dark black, even with graphite pencils.
