Kirsty Partridge Art Congratulations! It really is hard work. I’ve been complaining a lot lately that it seems I spend more time now doing so much admin work and other related things as you mentioned, such as scanning traditional art, making videos and editing them, creating social media content and graphics (which has to be different in size etc for different platforms), writing updates, replying to emails and other written content, and developing new ideas and products. Planning and creating art you want to put on your own products and keeping on top of all the things that still go wrong no matter how much research you do ahead of time can be really exhausting. You learn that sometimes you don’t always get correct information and that businesses you are counting on to keep up with their end of the deal are not always reliable and their mistakes or misinformation can cost you. It takes a lot of time and effort, but to me it’s worth it. I’m in charge of my own destiny.

I already am, the thing is just, that at the moment I do not really make any money with it. 😆 I realized some time ago though that I have to decide: I could either live and work "normal" and get in maybe a max. of 7 hours of working on my art every week and do this for the rest of my life and hate it, or I could work on my art every single day and hope that I will make decent money this way some day. I chose the latter. If it never earns me any good money, than I at least get to do what I love.

It's like an iceberg, we only see the part above water, there is so much unseen underneath. All her prep, planning, admin, writing, visuals, video, etc. Organization seems to be key. The actual art and creativity is just the "tip of the iceberg". I'm exhausted just watching this. 😆

I love hearing about your experiences and insights into having an art business. Could you make a detailed video about taxes (particularly for the UK), were you ever part-time? How did that change when you went full-time?
@KirstyPartridgeArt4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion! And yes I was part time when I started my channel. I worked a full-time job alongside building my art career for a few years until my art business was bringing in full-time wage 🥰 I still did many of these same tasks when I was doing it as a side hustle. The only difference is that when I went full time I had even more time available to invest in my business 💕
@TemiDansoArt4 жыл бұрын
Kirsty Partridge Art thanks for your response. My question is more to do with how much your taxes changed, I’m guessing for the same art income, you pay more tax when it’s your side hustle than when it’s your full-time gig?

What made me sad is when you said working on your actual art is the smallest part of your business. All those other things you touch upon, to me, are secondary to making art. As a result I fail at mundane things like customer care or accounting. I can't stay awake long enough to deal with money stuff but I can put 18 hrs into a drawing lol.

I became an artist long before digital art was even a thing! I believe that you have found so many more ways to generate income and the Internet has opened up so many revenue streams! I remember having 3 students in a class that really did not pay for itself! The same class given 1 year later, with 20 participants more than generated a hefty profit! It was so hit and miss before you could advertise or even record the class for additional lessons and creating another revenue stream! Wonderful video! Thanks!

I mean the high visual quality of videos, the high level of instruction you’re providing, and the simplicity of your explanations make your hard work very attracting and motivating. This useful content really helps us to realise the hidden part of becoming and artist, to not be disappointed to much if we don’t succeed right away and to be conscient of all the preparation is needed to reach the goal. Sincerely congrats Big thanks, big hug and best of luck Bye

Theres a reason we have terms like "starving artist"... and why most classical artists were not appreciated until after they died... Need to find a business nitch and manage an actual business. I agree with everything you've said here. It's just life. That is required of any self respecting business owner. It doesnt change. The products and services differ, but management, adaptation to market trends, and continual learning and expansion are crucial. Other than that, I love how you manage to present the information in a very sweet and personable way that makes it less "scary"... lol Practical, yet calm. I've known artists and designers who are very "puffed up", or just nasty... your approach is really refreshing. I can actually see and feel that you actually enjoy what you do (while actually being good////no... AWESOME at your talent and profession). I've taken instruction from professional artists, but also those who could not "do", just "teach". I think you do a wonderful job in your videos. Keep it up! Congrats on becoming a mother. God bless your growing family!
