I saw this documentary on PBS way back when I was in high school and have been talking about it since, and searching for it on the Internet from the moment I discovered You Tube. For me, this the broadest, funniest, sexiest performance of this play and the only one that makes any sense. Streep and Julia are just brilliant in it. Thank you, thank you for posting it.

This is great, but you should also check out "Commedia! Taming of the Shrew", the American Conservatory Theater performance from 1976. It's on KZbin. My students love it. I show these two performances and Liz Taylor's to show how differently the play can be staged.

I enjoy watching professionals giving new meanings to words just by how they're spoken. Great performances by both Meryl and Raul. I've seen many adaptations of Taming of the Shrew, some done by changing the time period to the wild west, 1930's Chicago, or even gender swapping the roles. Though the adaptations may be well acted, it's nice to see the play done in a more traditional way, showing that Shakespeare can still entertain us without resorting to gimmicks.

I saw an interview of Raul Julia, and he talked about Meryl Streep spitting on him, and he said, "How could Meryl spit on me? But then I thought about how Petruchio would react to it?" Julia was channeling something very true about Petruchio: he is a gentleman as he says he is. How many men would have the strength to let a woman spit on him without losing his shit? But to let a woman spit on him and lick it off as if it were nothing, just taking it as a wound of love, is to become the definition of a man. How many more men would become small and bristly? "That I'll try," she says, seeing if he is a gentleman, and for the whole play he doesn't lose his shit and proves to her that he is indeed so. That's what's happening underneath.

The Kabala as our three forms of consciousness - culture is Ka - traditions are Ba and those who use it to suppress others, don't understand one bit of what we can accomplish WITHOUT CONFLICTS ... what is that with being IN THE WRONG BODY, your body is your La, your linear life and sometimes you lose and other times you win, but it always feels like being an actor, playing Shakespeare, isn't it? Life can be a drama, but your body can bring you in the gardens of Eden, and playing with that duality is being the sublime artist - the one who can read between the lines, mocking with the blind King, who wants to be 'entertained' to prove he exists ... the other part of history ... Besides this, I think that Shakespeare's plays were meant to be performed in this way ... and really, waiting for a free ticket is part of the program ... Katherina and Petruchio - it could have been MY STORY!
