You are correct sir. I am completely unqualified to speak on my own opinion about a 70's band that stopped being relevant about 4 years before Lick It Up was even released. Thank you honestly, for tolerating me for nearly 7 minutes.

@@HeelsFan1967 I responded to a person who mocked me and deemed my "opinion" to be of no value because I didn't love an album as much as he did. Yeah, I need to be less judgemental. Okay. And Kiss was socially irrelevant by '83. Sorry. I still love them and always will. I'll make sure to take a survey before the next time I wish to have an opinion. Thanks for the input.

@@Asoulsecks The Alive Worldwide Tour of '96-'97 made them socially relevant again, but it was pretty much nostalgia at that point as there was no new material resonating with younger audiences. MTV Unplugged rekindled the fire and set them up for the biggest grossing tour a year later, but the flame dimmed somewhat by '98. Psycho Circus was a mess and a disappointment despite having a few good tracks on it. In my estimation, that was the last time they even approached anything musically relevant. The last 23 years or so have been a nostalgia act riding off its legendary past.

I concur. The Elder is a masterwork. I've loved it ever since I got it for Christmas in 1981. My only complaint was no band pictures.

Man~ what a great review & so much effort put into it~ thank you. My favorite album was 'Unmasked'~ I was 14 with my first girlfriend & totally in love with her~ Unmasked was FULL of love songs...mostly by Paul. I really think that ALL the members should have saved the best of these songs for their solo albums. Love Gun got me started with KISS~ a strange mix of songs, but I was in a mall & a record store had a full sized display of that album cover & were playing the 'Love Gun' song in a loop~ I LOVED it. I also love Dynasty~ at the time I was just glad to hear KISS on the radio again & I didn't at all think that KISS was going 'disco'~ I think that 'Magic Touch' was my favorite KISS song ever.

PETER CRISS 😼 Finally, just a comment in general: I am so sick of hearing this inane, knee jerk opinion about the "production" on the first two classic KISS albums being "the reason"... BS! I can understand someone saying it about "Hotter Than Hell" (but for me, it absolutely adds the LP's character and dark, evil sound!), but when it comes to the debut, I think you're all on crack! The LP sounds great! Especially as a debut album. Yes, of course the songs sound better on ALIVE!, but I personally feel that this album's sound, feel, speed and power is perfect! Each of the first 3 KISS albums are uniquely excellent in this way. What, do you all want them to sound the same? I love their own special qualities...and then having them all go to another level on KISS ALIVE! M ⚡ p.s. I don't care about anything after Lick It Up. That's some other stupid hair band...not KISS. REVENGE is ridiculously overrated! To me, it's a one track album. "UNHOLY" is brilliant, but the rest of it is a who cares affair, with some songs (Domino, I Just Wanna, etc.) being cringe inducing. Saw them at a club show on that tour, with my soon to be wife. It was good. At least they didn't look like sequin'd drunken housewives, like they did in '85-'89.

From my perspective, Love Gun is their second best album and by far Gene's best contribution. Maybe the only album Gene outdoes Paul on is Love Gun. My Top 5? 1. Rock n Roll Over 2. Love Gun 3. Dressed to Kill 4. Unmasked 5. Dynasty

Believe it or not, I rank Carnival Of Souls that highly as well. It's hard for me to make a definitive list because my mood is always changing, but it's definitely a Top 5 album for me. I don't care whether some fans hate it, Paul Stanley hates it, or whether it just gets written off for being too derivative .Gene and Bruce dove headlong into dark and grungy territory, and it paid off in spades. Very cool to see someone else who holds it in the same regard that I do.

i’ve listened to every kiss album in the span of the last few months. I’ve managed to pull through the albums I didn’t like, but carnival of souls, I quit half way through because of how much i hated it, doesn’t help I don’t like grunge music

This list is fascinating to me because of your age. The focus changes completely. Not a negative.. just very interesting to me. I am 54, and got into Kiss in 76. Here is my list: 1. Interest in Kiss picked up with Lick it Up. Creatures was their best album of that time, but died cuz people were sick of the makeup. I like Psycho Circus better than most. I really like half of em. Dude, I totally agree. I can't listen to Destroyer, ALL of those songs are better on Alive 2. I can't stand the studio version. I'll post my ranking in a sec.

Carnival of Souls has some of KISS's best material...and some of its worse. For that, the album ranks lower for me. Plus, we were expecting another Revenge album and didn't get it. I think that hurt the album's popularity too.

Carnival Of Souls so high? Number 2? What? Ranked so far in front of stone cold classics like Kiss, Destroyer, Hotter than Hell, Love Gun, Creatures And even Lick It Up? At 15? That’s a top ten album easily. Is this a joke? Lol? Seriously? Is it? You said Love Gun was getting poppy but you ranked inferior albums like Dynasty and Unmasked which are both more poppier, especially Unmasked, a lot higher. Each to their own though but that is very odd. I’d actually have Carnival Of Souls last sorry man. . I don’t hate it but it’s just a bit boring and long and wanna be grunge. No wonder they shelved it. It’s not real KISS. Kiss is supposed to be fun and that’s not fun it’s depressing. Paul absolutely hates it, he was talked into doing it by Gene, it was 4 or 5 years too late unfortunately. I agree Asylum is underrated. Number 1 for me is probably Rock n Roll Over so we finally agree on something else.
