Most of the audience heard on "Alive!" was recorded at various Kiss concerts and looped. Producer Eddie Kramer stated that he chose the best audience sounds, edited them together, and used them as a low background bed to give the listener the closest experience possible to being there in person. In 75 I was 15. The only people that liked Kiss were the little posers . The word was Kiss sucked. But their live show was fantastic. Rush was far more musically appreciated and intellectually thought of. I saw Kiss on their first tour, the stage was bare wooden planks and the only stage prop was a huge candlobra. They rocked hard and Gene's antics were over the top. They made so many mistakes and lost their places a lot but we didn't care that's not what we were there for. They came every year and the show just kept getting bigger and the band got tighter. Rush has always been brilliant.

in 75, i was 13. Every 18 year old I knew were whispering about this killer group with the makeup and great songs they couldn't stop playing on their 8 tracks in their Z28s. When I bought Hotter than Hell, it felt dangerous --look at that cover--and the music was instantly accessible. Rush? Well, they had a song called 'Working Man', but not very impressive or memorable one way or another. In fact, as Kiss became more popular, I saw that some were more into the 'edginess' and cool factor than the music: hating on a band they used to be crazy for became fashionable. I realized *they were the real fakes, not Kiss. It became a badge of honor to stick with what you knew to be true: this band was fun and had great songs. After Neil Peart really started making his mark on Rush, we all appreciated the musicianship and technical skill--(kinda like that guitarist in high school who wanted to show you how great a guitar player he was: cool, but ultimately self-indulgent and boring for the rest of us). We also knew Kiss had the better songs that would stick with you all day and were *infinitely more fun. Musically simple? I guess. But so what? Years later, I still enjoy those old Kiss albums. Deuce, Strutter, Hotter than Hell, C'mon and Love Me--all still sound as new as they day I first heard them. Other than 2112? Haven't been moved to pull out those old Rush records. And even then, they sound very ...try-hard. And very, very, very old.

Like your shirt! Coworker gave me the same one for my birthday this year. He very well could have influenced the haters favorite band. Ok one more thing, it's always gotten on my nerves about people calling them sellouts because of all the merchandise! For one the fans, myself included love it and it's not made for people who aren't fans. Second, it's their job! They don't punch a time clock somewhere for a living! And who doesn't want to make more money!? It's kinda like the point! Anyway I was born 5 months after their first album came out and became a fan between Asylum and Crazy Nights albums. If anyone has said it best about the fans love of the band, watch Tom Morello introduction of KISS into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame!

Terra Haute (Hote). I saw them there in the late 80's. I'm a metal head, not necessarily a Kiss fan, so I can't recall which album it was, but their live show was definitely pretty awesome. They had this huge pyramid, awesome laser and light show, pyrotechnics all over the place, really badass. I can't tell you who opened for them, some fairly generic 80's hair band. It didn't suck, but it didn't blow me away either. But yeah, Kiss live is definitely an experience, and they put on a helluva show. Way better than just listening to one of their albums. So, Terra Haute is a minor city, about 75K pop. back then, right on the border of Illinois. There's nothing but 100s of miles of farmland and farm towns surrounding it, except for Indianapolis, which is about an hour further east. Country music is huge here, so rockers and metal heads get pretty starved for anything resembling our kind of music, so Terra Haute will draw huge shows.

I was a bit late on the Kiss bandwagon. It was 1978-79, I was a 14 yr old looking to rock out and I bought Destroyer because I loved the Marvel comic style of the album cover. I was converted by Detroit Rock City and God of Thunder, but the buzz only lasted about 4 or 5 months. When I soon after discovered Rush, I knew I wanted to be a musician. So Ted Nugent, AC DC, The Scorpions and Kiss went bye bye snd were soon replaced by YES, Zeppelin, Genesis, Gentle Giant and Rush. But Kiss were novel and exciting to a young adolescent, they were like forbidden candy that you knew was bad for you, the songs were mostly pop drivel, propping up the mythos of rock stardom excess. If they had written songs with more of the Alice Cooper creepy crawly themes ; psychosis murder and alienation and staged a theatre of the macabre as Alice did, they would certainly have had more miliege and would have left more of a mark on the legacy of dark metal, death metal, and hardcore. But they would not have had the mainstream appeal and would have found themselves outdone and overshadowed by Iron Maiden, OZZY, and Metallica, who clearly had more of a handle on the darker side of hard rock. Kiss had a creepy demon as a bass player who spewed blood and breathed fire, but the other three were just guys in cute make-up, you can't write scary songs when your drummer is a kitty cat! Lol

Because they had a great show people had to look for something negative so they would say they couldn't play. That's nonsense. When you say there were some records where Peter and Ace didn't play on, that didn't happen until Destroyer. There were two songs that Ace didn't play the solo to, that's because he didn't show up not because he couldn't play. Before that nobody replaced any of them on the recordings.Peter did all the drums on every record including destroyer. And including the next two records love gun and rock and roll over. Dynasty was where things started to fall apart for Peter and didn't play on the record except for one song I believe. That's because he had a car accident and couldn't play and he was looking to quit the band anyhow. But in any case, anyone who says they couldn't play their instruments well, doesn't know what they are talking about.

They rounded out the set with "Let Me Go Rock & Roll" not Rock And Roll All Night. The nonsense that KISS lacked musicality compared to their peers, and that Ace and Peter had ghost musicians throughout, is bs.. Peter didn't play on Dynasty. By Unmasked, he was non existent. But the core first 6 studio albums, it's all him. Ace solo didn't appear on Destroyer for Sweet Pain. But as we discovered several years back, the narrative from Gene n Paul that Ace had a card game to go to, and didn't record a solo, was debunked with the release of Destroyer "Resurrected" including the solo Ace recorded for Sweet Pain.

Whether you like Rush's music or not, anyone that truly knows anything about music would certainly recognize that the members of Rush are far superior musicians to Kiss. Kiss developed an exciting show but their music started out pretty generic and actually got worse over time. Kiss started out as a hard rock band and then when their albums didn't sell they started jumping around with whatever genre they thought they could make money playing (disco, pop, metal) and ultimately it was their theatrics that made their career not their music.

I'll never forget 45 years ago returning home on my bicycle from the neigborhood record store after buying Zeppelin IV and KISS Alive and my Dad (RIP) who was from the Elvis and Sinatra era looked at the KISS album cover and said "What the hell is this sh!t???" Lol. I still have those 2 records and probably 100 others in milk crates somewhere..

@@bobmorr2892 Yep .Only difference between a cat getting ran over and Rush is the cat wasn't begging radio to play it's poppy, sellout, watered down crap that squirted out during the accident.

@bobmorr2892 Those Kiss "clowns" as you put it, sold a lot more albums than Rush did.

When you're talking about the history of kiss, you're really out of context and your timeline is incorrect. The first Three kiss albums and kiss Alive were nothing but the four original guys. They were not using other guys until destroyer. I know Rush is a great technical band, but I've never been able to get past the awful sound of Getty Lee's voice.

Music critic is a pointless profession. Music taste is completely subjective.
