He was also only 23 when he wrote pretty much them the majority of this album. Not to mention that he was also legendary enough to go toe to toe and eventually dethrone Michael Jackson and Madonna from the top slots in pop music and held his own with the UN and only Aretha Franklin in a duet.

Thank you so much for breaking this down. I appreciate your enthusiasm. George Michael is my favorite vocalist and songwriter of all time. The man was just such a rare gem. His music has accompanied me through my ups and downs and I will never ever forget what a beautiful gift he left us all with his songs.

Enjoyed your critique ! It’s refreshing to listen to someone who has the ability to breakdown a song and know how it was constructed. It’s worth mentioning George not only wrote and sang it but arranged and produced it too !! All at the age of 24 ! The man was a genius!

Ok...that information about the bassline holding on "Fool". Well done, bro. thank you for that. Edit: And that guitar flourish on "star" and piano flourishes...perfect. I've listened to this song a MILLION times and I thought I was the only one that noticed these little things.

I really appreciate watching a reaction from someone who actually has enough knowledge of music to dissect and analyze, and not just give an opinion. Some of the reactions are so poor ... and lazy, not even a cursory googling for the most basic information about the song beforehand. Basically, just play the song, make some noise. At this level, anybody can provide a reaction, and judging by the numbers, people do. GM wrote, arranged, played the instruments, and produced this album. He was 23. This album was his first after he went solo. It won the Grammy for album of the year. It stayed at #1 in the US for 51 weeks. He was the first white singer to reach #1 on the R&B with One More Time. The thing about GM is he was in a class by himself. He could cover so many genres that the songs he wrote are, and sound different, unlike most albums - where each song sounds kind of like the rest. And every song in each of his albums is so good, it's hard to pick a favorite. Most albums, one or two songs are great. The rest is just fillers. Just subscribed.

Love your reaction to this song! You mention how the accompanist parts respond and react to the lyrics and the emotional intent. I appreciate that you acknowledged how important the instrumental parts and players are to make a song work. I feel like a lot of modern music forgets that and focuses more on the vocals. Great song. I’ve never heard it before.

@@LeonardoTorresMusic Indeed. GM was an even better singer live. He would sing his songs differently each time, depending on how he felt at the moment. And sing them flawlesly. I feel GM as a whole is underrated, which makes me sad. I implore you to check out his cover of 'Love is in Need of Love Today', originally by Stevie Wonder. He sang it live for Princess Diana in 1993. His vocals and the arrangement is f***in flawless

johano1993 , People in the US seem to always think that George was under rated. I guess if you are not constantly played on the radio you no longer exist.George was internationally celebrated as one of the best vocalist and songwriters of all time. Even though he stepped back from the US audience right after the album Faith came out, he remained very popular in the rest of the world and especially his home country of the UK. George was the most played artist in a straight period of 20 years on you UK radio. More than Elton more than the Stones etc..... George won arm loads of awards and the man sold 115 album albums in his lifetime. That alone says it all. He still holds records for some of the music he released and I imagine he will for years to come. Not to mention that this man at the tender age of 18, 19 was writing producing arranging all of his music. He was indeed a musical genius that comes around very very rarely. He has a beautiful catalog of music and to me, is the best of all time.

@@rosemiller2990 I'm not saying people don't realize he is great, its that dont understand HOW great he was. He has the awards and album sales, no doubt. But his later albums wasn't very well received. From a musical-standpoint, they are every bit as good as Faith, and maybe even better. He doesn't get the same credit as Prince and Michael Jackson, even though he was just as talented (way more talented than MJ). He is rarely mentioned in the greatest of all time conversation, a place he definetely belongs.

johano1993, LWP, Older and Patience were stellar. In fact they all went to number 1 in the UK and other parts of the world. LWP out sold Faith in the UK. Just a few months ago he was named in The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography for one of the most influences contemporary people in UK history. The man was amazing.

Hi, This is my first time seeing you reacting to George Michael. He's the only one I care to listen to. I want to say a little more about how he wrote, sang, arranged, produced, and created his videos. He did many collaborations, covers, many Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Whitney Houston, Paul Mc Cartney, on and on! He also has done many covers. I don't know if you've seen him in concert, interviews, or all of his videos but I recommend you do. U TUBE has a lot of his creations and all the rest. Also, some are him recording in the studio. Unbelievable, outstanding. There is also two video's Studio vs life. And something like the best of parts one & two. Since you really know something about music (that's obvious) I do believe you will enjoy this if you haven't already. I hope you do more George Michael. My God, there's on nobody or ever be anyone like George. Now, after all my hot air, my suggestion will be, OLDER, and SPINNING THE WHEEL. I think you'll really like these, More on the jazzy side as well as his favorite album, so he said. Well, enjoy I'll keep watch for more George Michael

I'm pretty sure he was the first ever artist to reach number 1, with a song composed by him, arranged by him, sung by him, produced by him and on which he played all the musical parts. I can't remember which song it was though. He had 7 US number 1s and even more in the UK, so it's hard to narrow it down... :)

It would be nice to hear what you think more about George’s vocals. For me he sang with such clarity that you could always make out the words. He also seem to always put his all into his vocals and what they were meant to make you feel. The emotion vulnerability he projected, was extremely rare. You can hear a song sometimes and feel that it’s a sad song, but somehow when George delivered his heart wrenching ballads it touched you to the core of your soul. There are many songs that George sings that just brings me to tears. That, I feel that is how he moved his audience.

I'd like to point out something that most reviews of this song seem to miss. If you were to take it down to its bare bones this song could be performed with just the vocals and guitar and, if you hadn't heard it before, it would sound utterly complete. Some reviewers can't quite put their finger on why they like it so much. Obviously, the vocals are marvelous and the lyrics are poignant but, it is the classic, old-timey "chunk, chunk, chunk, chunk" (4/4 time) strumming of the chords on the down beats of most every measure by the guitarist that gives that forward motion rolling along kind of feel that just pulls the listener in and feels so comfortable, like your favorite sweater. It's like the feeling of holding the hand of a loved one while enjoying a stroll, at ease and totally comfortable. It "lays back" while still paying strict attention to the "time". Another aspect are all the "pick up" notes George uses at the beginning of most every verse, the 2nd and 3rd beats of a triplet pattern. Triplets "roll" and using them in contrast with the staid 4/4 character of most every measure as the pick up notes will pull you in rhythmically. You are still going to feel the "effect" of the triplet pattern within every quarter note of the measure W/OUT them actually being present! Gives each beat an easy "roll" into each other. When the song climaxes, notice the heavy use of the triplet mostly using the same note (drone note) as a staccato "driver", 3rd note of the triplet hanging there in "space" a bit before the next pickup note and triplet that comes next, creates "time" drama. Listen to it again, try to isolate just the guitar and voice (for the majority of the song, not the big finish before the last verses) and you'll see what I mean. It's just an opinion. I'm not "right" about how to listen to this song. I'm just saying give it a try and see how it makes you feel. Listening to a good song over and over is actually very important to the development of one's ear. Takes a bit of patience, especially for young ones, but yields such rewards. Here, I'm preaching to the choir. You are, obviously, a lover of music and you are going to do that anyway, right? It's the collection of the tiniest of things, the subtle nuances that we all hear but not really "notice" that pierce so deeply.
