Nice kit bash and it really looks good. I nearly cut my thumb off using my new mini table saw. I wasn't prepared for a mini kick back and sliced my thumb open. Cheers from eastern TN

Great video . I am going to purchase this kit for our modular layout (it is suffering a heavy overhauling) and I will need to modify the position of the conveyor and silos to be in line with the rest of the buildings due to space restrictions. This video is going to be really useful for me. Thanks a lot for sharing it!

Looks good! The additional detail does a lot. I finished a Walthers grain elevator, the one with corrugated metal sidings or walls, and I used a pencil up right at the joints to show some miscoloring and it came out pretty nice, and Ifinished that by toning it down with a wash of the same color as painted the wall.

Nice work....FYI the process flows down the sloped "tube" kiln in the opposite direction you were describing. The silos contain the finished product for shipment. Building 3 supplies the raw material for processing in the kiln.

I personally am not a fan of some of the Walthers kit, The thick windows and glazing and the corrugated siding mostly. I have sevral of the kits and will probably just get rid of most of them and scratch build, but what you did with this kit has me re thinking that. What you did with some add ons and weathering has turned this into a fine looking model. I had no plans to have a cement plant on the layout but I feel like now I need one, Thanks so much for sharing your work, Cheers Rob

Rob: Superb modeling and detailing. It's so good that it looks like you're modeling O Scale. You aren't fudging on us, are you, and really doing O Scale to get this level of detailing?! Weathering and texturing is great. Love the texture on the silos. The Rustoleum texture paint really pops the surface. Love to see you do a video on how you use the acrylic washes to achieve your effects.
@THEBENNETTRAILROAD6 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill- Rob here. Thank you, and no I haven't switched to O scale! I have always hesitated to do a video on weathering, as often I don't know what I am going to do and just wing it. If I get an actual process down I may make a video of it!

Great bit of kit bashing. I like a lot of the Walthers kits, but given how much there already is in them, I don't think it would kill them to put a bit more in, like ladders, walkways, railings etc. Maybe they don't expect people to model them straight out the box but kit bash them. Cheers
@robbennett19656 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave. The Walthers kits are pretty good- and they make good material for kit bashing. Walthers does have some nice etched brass parts, but maybe the kit cost would get to high if they were included? Maybe they should create a building detail kit, with safety ladders, railings, stairs, platforms, etc. Etched brass, all in one kit. I'd buy it!

In a cement plant, asphalt plant a Kiln cooks the material as it rolls and mixes the material, heating it up, 300-1500 degrees. You need a red blinking light at the top of your silos! Roy
@robbennett19656 жыл бұрын
Ah HA! Great idea, why didn't I think of that! Now where are my red LEDs....
@railroad19703 жыл бұрын
For industrial lights on the outside of buildings I took a piece of .100x.080 styrene, used a drill bit and hand drilled the “back” of it. I painted the top of the part to simulate the metal casing of the fixture then put a nano LED in the back. I have a pictures I can send you.
@Nscalestuff6 жыл бұрын
Buttttt..... Unless that's one perfectly operational headhouse.... You're gonna have to cut a door for maintenance to get in, unless their gonna go over the railing lol. Fine work! Been working a medusa cement structure, and modified the silos in a straight line instead of a bank of 4x4, I believe I'm gonna use the painting technique you used for them. Thanks for the idea
@THEBENNETTRAILROAD6 жыл бұрын
I know, and you are correct. I considered it, but then gave up. I hope the paint method works for you- I like the way it turned out and have used it on a few other items as well.

Rob, the complex looks awesome, great work adding details and lights etc. You said you are not using it as a cement mill, naturally if you were the process flow would run the opposite direction, ie down the kiln and up the conveyor and finished product in the silos.
@robbennett19656 жыл бұрын
Thanks- and I really have no idea how the cement process works! Like I said, I just thought the kit looked narly and industrial. BTW, I am enjoying your Butler turn videos- good stuff!

I really like the rust color of the rotary kiln, you have a great eye for color and weathering. Glad you are enjoying the operating videos, although I could use your photography skills as I am still fighting out my camera.
@dennisarmes34733 жыл бұрын
great looking complex !!! please don't be so hard on yourself... might want to add some weathering powders as these plants have dust/powder/etc everywhere. great job !!! fyi... process flows left to right opposite of what was described, therefore you will need a loading system/piping/etc at far right (end of process) building i.e. you need to load from above unless loading system is assumed to be in building with rr track inside. just helping... beautiful work.... really nice !!!
@RonsTrainsNThings6 жыл бұрын
I'm curious how you weathered the metal duct work (for lack of a better term) on top of the silo complex??? Looks really nice.
@THEBENNETTRAILROAD6 жыл бұрын
Ron- Rob here. All I did was paint it my "grimy black" color (I use Vallejo "Black Grey") then dust on some Vallejo and Ammo of Mig weathering powders. I finished it with some light dry brushing using Chalk White acrylic paint, also Vallejo. I like the way this brings out the edges.
@spankyfuentes35026 жыл бұрын
Are you going to paint the handrails in front of the compressor Safety Yellow. Or a slight dry brush of safety yellow? Great work on this build! Thanks fir sharing!

Any suggestion on how to do the weathering for this kit?
@MITracks6 жыл бұрын
If you dont want to use it as a cement plant something that could be interesting would be to say its a glass recycling plant. Basically glass items are ground up and then loaded into both covered and open hoppers. The product is called cullet. If you google railcar full of glass, a gentleman shows to to make an open load using a coal insert and glitter.

Rob, Your layout is incredible, and the work and detail on your model kits is amazing. It's always great watching your videos and seeing the progress on your layout. Fred- the safety ladders are from Gold Medal Models, item # HO 87-12. The railings are from Sea Port Model Works, item PEB9 Etched Brass Railing. I obtained both from MB Klein, aka Modeltrainstuff.com
