One thing also is the finished edge of the counter top is better straight than a rolled edge because liquids will travel around the rolled edge and get your cabinet faces where as the straight stands a better chance of dripping off before heading to your cabinets. My family has been in the tile, granite and marble business for over 75 years and we use a lot of granite and marble in our houses. Getting ready to build our last on..lol One of the things I am not going to do anywhere in the house is knobs on cabinets because it eventually becomes a constant battle of them coming unscrewed. That doesn't happen with handles.

Also knobs can hook your clothes as you work along your bench - lots of handles can do this too, but there are lots of options for handles that won't catch in clothing. ❤

I am.about to remodel my kitchen and have 30inch cabinet, the space in between the TOP ann Bottom cabinets is 18inches and it's not very practical for me especially as I cook alot with a large family, I was hoping to raise my cabinets up and to the ceiling covering the 12inch gap above and make the gap between to be 22, I was afraid it will be below code but I'm glad I came through this video and hearing you recommend a 22 gives me some relief, thank you so much 🎉

I too am 5'6" and currently redoing a kitchen. My house was built in 55 with uppers, was trying to replace what I have with a similar size. But they're wood, and the corners extend to the wall where you can't reach (basically a 50 inch cabinet for 24 inches of space). So I'll have to do strips to fill the useless void when replaced with big box store cabinets. Also my upper cabinets are 18 from the counter, which is the recommended 54 inches off the floor. Not opposed to another two inches of space. But thanks for the video, I'll have to watch it again. I've always been a DIY kinda guy, but cabinets are uncharted territory for me. Drywall, paint, trim? Easy, but cabinets are expensive and require planning.

Thanks for watching! The uppers at 54” will work. That’s the old standard. But with light rails for under cabinet lights and oversized appliances, the extra helps! Good luck with the remodel!🍀

Upper Cabinets: Flyover Country here, with 100% oak, framed cabinets - that are barely 11 inches deep. The amount of wasted space per unit is frustrating. They didn't use 1x2s, they used 2x4s, further minimizing interior storage. This video is extremely informational. Thank you.

20" is not a good idea for average height or short people. At 5' 2", my cabinets are the standard 18" above the counter and I still need to place the second shelf not more than 9" above the lower one so I can use it. 18" is plenty high for most uses and is the standard height for good reasons. Otherwise, a great video, good tips!

Great overview. My biggest peeve with kitchens, and I don't mind soffits, are cabinets around refrigerators that are pushed back and especially the ones installed above them (typically the 12" deep ones). I hate fridges that stick way out and I prefer to use 24" deep cabinets around them. It just screams "look at me, I'm a huge box in the middle of everything." Yes, getting to the back is a pain and especially the one above, but it looks so much nicer with the fridge that looks almost builtin. Put your least used stuff in the back of them.

Such helpful and valuable information! In my previous 1945 home I did some updates to the kitchen which involved lowering the cabinets 2 inches as most of us are under 5'6"..LOL! That still left an 18" clearance from counter. Then I added the fascia and crown molding like you mentioned. It looked great! So I can attest that ceilings and walls are not even, flush or plumb!! Caulk does wonders for those imperfections. 😉 Now I'm in a 1959 home, with handmade solid wood cabinets to the ceiling that are NAILED to the walls. I'm brainstorming ways to make the kitchen more functional and appealing on a DIY non existing budget! 🥴

Good with the bad! Solid wood is a blessing but the insides aren’t usually set up for the best storage. There are plenty of “aftermarket” accessories like pull outs for $100, etc .that can change the cabinets for the better!

@@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa Absolutely correct on the sturdiness of wood and storage...if I can only reach it! Also, for some reason the doors are laminated pressed wood and not in great shape. So looking into replacing just the doors vs new cabinets.

Awesome video! Thank you! I'm just dreaming right now, but I'd like to put a small kitchen in a basement where there was never a kitchen so I'm wondering about utility hookups/rough-ins for this. I also can't change the ceiling which is a horrible drop ceiling. I imagine that's going to look super stupid against the upper cabinets. Would love to see videos on these challenges.

Glad I saw this. I'm in social housing and waiting for a.new kitchen coming. Details so far are an improvement on the old one. Raising the top cabinets to allow a shelf underneath will make the space a lot more functional for me, without creating any extra work. Its renter friendly in that removing the extra shelf and making the walls good is even easier than putting the shelf in. I have 3 single wall cupboards too shallow for dinner plates. A double base unit under the sink, 1 base drawer.unit and one corner unit - this will be changed for a better access door and some kind of pull out/lazy susan. I added floor to ceiling extra shelves to rake a lot of stuff, still not best organised. High units, extra shelf but no extra gadget space will improve it. The kitchens you show for the equivalent 3 bedroom home seem enormous, very green with envy here.

Sharp edges on granite are susceptible to chipping - and will for-sure chip if around the sink opening (unless you never do dishes in the sink). The rounded edges that we have around our sink are nowhere near large enough in their radius. We never knew this when we had our granite installed.

One thing to keep in mind if you push the uppers beyond 20" above the countertop, you'll be in code violation if you choose to use under cabinet outlets. 20" is the max height on those. My own uppers start at 55 1/2" and are 48" tall. The top two "shelves" are on hinged pull down mechanisms so they can be brought down to the level of the bottom shelves.

Curious why you didn't put the sink under the window with that 1st kitchen and where are the uppers (looks unfinished)? no place to hide your stuff.. and looks messy because everything ends up on the counters. The multi-level island is OUT and not sure it will ever come back. (I am a realtor/broker) buyers want large flat working islands for entertaining/working and when they see those multilevel islands they say Nope or that's got to go. Open shelves are OUT too (it's pretty gross if you think about it) with dust and no cabinets for uppers is OUT because of what I said earlier. The cabinets not going to the ceiling, are coming back in vogue thanks to Studio Magee and all the insta-chicks. Bringing the cabinets to the ceiling with trim can look like a big fat forehead and not everyone wants the stacked cabinet look/expense so, I get why the swing back to open space above cabinets is happening. One thing I always recommend it deeper uppers specially if you have a large working island. Most are 11-12" deep interiors that barely fit our oversized plates or a row of glasses. I had my made 16" deep and love the look and added storage. I always push for 16-18" deep for uppers for new built or clients who are remodeling and bringing the uppers to the counter for easy hidden storage that is still accessible and its a great space to hide small appliances. Microwaves in the kitchen are now going into the panty. They are putting in countertop models or going back to the framed wall built-in and adding them to the pantry space. Not sure this is practical for microwave users. I added ours to our pantry because it is not a daily used appliance in our home. I see a lot of super high-end kitchens and not one of them have 12 inch deep uppers or multilevel islands and all of them are brining the toe-kick out and to the floor or using curved trim to come around the corners specifically on the islands. They look like pieces of furniture, beautiful. Makes me want to add this to my kitchen.

No one talks about that but it's actually great logic to keep the cabinets to a maximum of 30" wide.

I’m not much of a rule follower. What works? What’s going to fit? What makes sense for your stuff? For how you want it to look! Symmetry is overrated!

When designing a kitchen, as a rule of thumb, if you find yourself measuring 40 times, you are too tight, you will run into troubles. It's not a matter of if, but a matter of how bad. Don't play hero, Give yourself some mercy and use filler strips instead. Losing an inch here and there is not a big deal. Also, the fridge and the kitchen range should not be friction fit. I've seen that too often....

Be careful with pantry style cabinets that go to the ceiling. Because to stand them up you need more than their height. We had to stand ours up in our stairs and then slide them where they belonged. I think that is what we did. Otherwise very helpful video.

actually usa is like far far behind EU in tech of kitchen, simple thing if you cant reach and you need a stool, there is so called extra gadget which you pull and all inside of cabinet which is sky high will come to your face level, you must come to Eu for showrooms. and if you really know kitchen and problems you will be shocked how stuff here is done even in furniture. Anyway , but here we also have issue, its gas hobs. basically they look great work, but the second you grab 2 big pans and they simply dont fit ::"D and if you want to usee all hobs burners you get issue than pans and pots dont fit always heating up switches bigest joke ever from manufacturers, but only gas hobs

In our new kitchen, it is going to have a cathedral ceiling. We had that also in our last house. I am wondering if there is any better options than open tops to the cabinets since the ceiling is not flat?

I haven’t seen a good alternative. Embrace it and put up lights above the cabinets to accentuate the cathedral!
