Kitchen Drawer Alterations to make space for a new, much deeper, hob unit

I was asked to help reduce the size of a pair of kitchen drawers to allow a new deeper hob unit to be fitted. This required the top two drawers to be made narrower. I did not take any video shots until I suddenly realised it might be of value to show some techniques and approaches to this sort of task.

Love new creations, but also love when something is repurposed to fit new needs.

Well done Peter. I picked up your slight angst at doing a job for a friend. I’ve been in the same situation and there is that extra pressure to get it perfectly right. How awful if you made a mistake and had to somehow make it right. It’s much easier building things for yourself.

You are right but I would never want to let a friend down if I am able to help. The project was straight forward on paper but awkward because of delays waiting for an electrician to disconnect the old hob unit and a organising someone to come in and make the hole in the work top slightly bigger. The result is really good which is a great relief. It also gave me the opportunity to take my new CSC Sys on an away day - that is why I built the lightweight rolling cart. I also used the new battery CTLC Sys extractor for the first time and found it to be excellent. I will make a video about it in the not too distant future. It was a pity that I could not film it in use on this project. Cheers. Peter

I really like the idea of dialing in the rabbet to 15.8 mm on the CSC SYS 50. Quick and easy, no multiple passes in scrap pieces to dial in to the depth desired ( I would probably still make a test cut in scrap just to make sure). I also like the CSC on your portable roll cart. When it’s not needed, roll it out of the way. I assume you made to the same height so that the CSC top is even with all your other Parf work tables?

Hi Bob, Yes, the same heights all round. Cheers. Peter

Hi Peter, thanks for another fascinating video. Retaining the dovetail look using the domino was a master stroke. I do have a question, which is why mark out the domino positions when the machine has the little reference stops?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, The Domino reference stops are not always ideal and I have never got into the habit of using them. In this case the lower domino slot had to be closer to the middle than the top one so marking was easier. Cheers. Peter

Hi Doug, When labour charges are so high it makes sense to get the best materials as they last much longer and save having to redo things paying, yet again, for labour. Cheers. Peter

@@NewBritWorkshop I agree Peter. Ours are beech with birch ply shelves. The face frames take the beating and can be replaced separately. Cost effective and sustainable

Interesting video, thank you. I am interested to know how you dealt with the runners that needed moving but I guess because of the privacy issue, it is not easy to discuss and demonstrate.

Yes, it was awkward but all I did was to create new support pieces on the left and right to which they were attached. Peter

Any space just behind those drawer front panels that have no drawer in them, to fit a shallow drawer or spice rack etc ? just a thought .... great video btw !

Hi Troy, I did look at something like that but it was too much effort for such a small gain in space. Cheers. Peter

@8:22 I would have used the T slot to clamp the wood down to the sliding table and just move the fance out of the way before cutting.

Hi Peter, question if i may; Quality to price and working with items,woodpeckers or Benchdogs product? I want to invest in product, but dont know witch to buy.
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop Жыл бұрын
I would not buy either of those, especially the latter. Axminster's UJK Parf kit,which includes the original design of some common types of dogs, are all created to the same standards, the same tolerances and all are designed to work together. Axminster's Parf kit is available either through their web site or one of the many retailers throughout the world. Peter
