This was one of the first videos I watched when started learning clawhammer style and I still love it. Your playing is a good goal for anyone. it's clean and sharp.

Your sense of time is amazing. After playing banjo for half a year and watching all these youtube videos, you're one of the best ones by far on here. I also like the plunky sound you get from playing above the fret board.

Michael, I'd just like to say thank you for all of these fantastic videos you have up. Your clawhammer videos are one of the main reasons I took up banjo a little over a year ago (guitar not long after), and I'm absolutely loving it. You've been an inspiration to me. Thanks for everything. :) Keep on picking!

I'm 14 and started playing banjo when I was 9 but took a few years off, I am so in love with the clawhammer style of banjo that it's made me want to get back into the instrument. Can anyone suggest some easy beginner clawhammer songs or suggest a book I could get to learn clawhammer songs? And great playing I love the melodic sound, close to "blackberry blossom".

Hi Andrew. This is open G tuning (or thereabouts) gDGBD. The capo on the second fret raises everything to the open A atmosphere: aEAC#E.

That banjer is way old-time .. and so is the unique old-time sound that you so expertly extract from it. If Bascome Lamar Lunsford was still with us, I'm sure he'd want to feature you and that instrument. Well done.
@WornGlobe13 жыл бұрын
@TheMarkedham Largely depends on what style you want to play, clawhammer or bluegrass. Open backed banjo for Clawhammer and the ones with the large resonators are typical for bluegrass. As for a beginner banjo, you should be able to get a decent sounding one for under £300.

@FrostyMorn Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'll keep fiddling around with my banjo to see what I can accomplish. @d2majzoub i alternate depending on the song - there's a different feel that comes with each finger - sometimes i use my ring finger for a light brush/touch - sometimes you'll want to use both fore- and second finger in the same song to strike higher vs. lower strings - have fun!

It basically comes down to whichever you prefer. I tried both, i preferred playing with the index finger and that was because i feel i get a cleaner pick. You have plenty of time to decide and it'll probably decide for you.

Good advice there, all I could add to that as a Bass player who plays banjo, the 6 string guitar will offer little as a stepping stone to frailing banjo, go straight to the banjo and cut out the middle man.And yes, my playing improved overnight when I bought my first good quality instrument. Cheap banjo's are o.k for about 6 months.

I really enjoy your style of clawhammer. You make it look easy though I know it is not. I really am drawn to old time stringband tunes. In fact, I'm been looking for my first banjo and plan to learn how to play in the clawhammer style. I have narrowed my choices to the Gold Tone CC-OT or the Gold Tone CB-100. Not sure if the CB-100 is worth the extra bucks, but I digress. Anyway, thanks for sharing your playing. I hope you will post some more clawhammer tunes.

I have found skin heads to be susceptible to changes in humidity. Here in northern New England we have very wide swings in RH from January to July. You can keep up if you are diligent... which I am not, so I use synthetic heads.
