I began this project early spring, right after Easter, and finally am calling it complete mid October. At least it's still the same year. :)
Project included the building of all of the island cabinetry which includes 12 drawers, my first delve into that type of project. On the back side are shelving units covered by doors and slightly recessed under the countertop overhang. (Someday we hope to add some stools for sitting there.) It took about 10 sheets of 3/4 inch birch plywood, 3 sheets of 1/4 inch birch plywood, several gallons of semigloss polyacrylic, a lot of screws, and of course the prerequisite blood sweat and a few tears along the way.
I ran electrical out from the circuit on the small side counter, under the floor and up into the island where we have properly wired plugs at both ends.
The countertops are MDF layered over plywood, sides smoothed with Bondo, edges routed, painted, and then coated in Stone Coat Art Coat Epoxy. Colors used were Black Diamond Silver Pearl, Marblers Glow Lagoon, Jewelescent Interference Blue, Green, and Gold, Eye Candy Deep Ocean Green, Alumilite Translucent Green Dye (which turns peacock blue), and a smidge of Unicone Art Crushed Crystal. Ever so grateful to my firstborn for helping me with the color coat application. It was a stressfully fun experience for both of us. Looking forward to the next adventure!
