Watched the doc in 2016 with my roommate at the time. We were depressed for like 2 days. Something about the way it was made and the elongated scenes/ score made it hit home. Keep in mind this was the SLAM magazine days pre social media where word of mouth and games on espn was EVERYTHING. This was aslo the era where PLAYGROUND Style players were being embraced by fans. And1 mixtape was birthing. Iverson, and the NBA was trying to re brand to be exciting. Ball players from the hood were idolized. Unlike now where most NBA is children of former players, europeans, or kids that grew up rich. The timing was everything and lenny was over hyped/ too immature to realize the situation he was in. At the end of the day he was just a kid who wasn't mature enough to handle the position he was in. Point blank.

At the end of the Lenny Cooke documentary when he’s singing Mario’s Let Me Love You, you can fully see how crushed Lenny was. This is a precautionary tale as to why you need people in your circle who make smart decisions. Most underprivileged black youth would have taken that 350K and done exactly what he did. All he Had to Do was 3 things 1.Pass all his highschool to be eligible to graduate 2.Ball out his senior and stay Healthy 3. Stay out of Trouble off the court And he would have had the option to go straight to the NBA out of highschool or Go to college for a year then go to the league. But he fell in love with the percs of everything outside of those things that came with the Fame , even till this day the way he talks about all the Females he was smashing it seems like he was more proud of all that than what he accomplished with ball..... @DJRashadHayes3 жыл бұрын
Which is exactly why teams passed. He was acting like that with only $350k. What happens with millions?? It would’ve been a mess. Plus he was given shots with the summer league teams of Seattle & Boston. So he was STILL given a shot. The draft wasn’t the end for him. He was given two more shots. They said at Boston during the summer league, he was having trouble remembering the plays and operating in a team structure which is why he was cut. The man failed 9th grade twice and then quit when he aged out of high school. It’s just absurd he even kept getting out on the basketball team while taking remedial classes. And no disrespect to Lenny. It’s amazing that he’s telling his story & helping kids. It’s also great that he’s never been involved in violence towards women or anything like that. He’s a good dude. Just wish he took school seriously back then as well as acknowledged the breaks that he was given. Because so many never get those shots.
@alphamac1083 жыл бұрын
@@DJRashadHayesWord!....I remember when DJ Clue had him on his radio show on Hot 97 in NYC, maybe a day or so before the Draft, they were braggin' bout him possibly being drafted #1 or being picked (one or the other). They were talkin' REAL SLICK!...when he didn't get picked, you didn't hear anything from him again...mind you, this was before the social media age. Shit was sad!
@DJRashadHayes3 жыл бұрын
@@alphamac108 lmao wow just crazy. The level of absurdity is absolutely mind blowing. And what irritates me is sometimes u hear him go back to his major defect which is blaming other people. He’s a good dude and ive heard him take responsibility but every once in awhile u hear the old Lenny. He blames this person and that person for not telling him- My G, u had that white rich lady providing shelter for you and food & a positive environment!!! U aint have no pressure to go pro but your own dream to live the high life NOW. It’s just crazy sometimes. Cuz so many people don’t have that opportunity at all. The man failed 9th grade twice! And still was on the team! His senior year he was 20 and he was still scholastically a sophomore. The school in New Jersey had him taking remedial classes so he could actually have the GPA to play. What college was he going to ever be eligible for?? The NCAA doesn’t accept remedial courses. What about the SAT’s & ACT’s??!! Straight delusion at that point. Then he couldn’t play high school basketball anymore but he could’ve grinded and worked out to get his studies to catch up. And those schools would’ve STILL took him if he did that. Instead he sees the mountain of work & instead of exercising discipline-- he takes money from an agent & declares for the draft lmao. Absurd! And he blames the agent but who knows what happened to that agent at the agency when that money wasn’t returned or recouped. They gave him $350k plus put him in Malibu to prepare for the draft! Free of charge!! And he refused to work out for the teams cuz he thought that’s what superstars do: Refuse the workouts except for the top 5. In what world was he ever going top 5?!!!!!!!! So to hear him on the radio talking about him going No. 1: what?!!!! Lmao. Arrogance & delusion. And it all started when everyone kept giving him everything & bending the rules at every stop. But those people and teachers were trying to help him rise out of poverty.

Fam 350,000 is a lot to blow in one day regardless if your 18, I don’t even think I would’ve did that at 18 if I had it because even at that age I understood struggle and he should’ve to after going through what he did and it’s no ones business to teach you business it’s sad but it’s true puff and anyone else that was older more experienced around him didn’t need to tell him anything it’s not their business it was his. After being homeless if I come up on 350,000 I’m trying to figure out how can I invest my money to now work for me so that I never have to worry about being homeless again and he blew it smh some people get so many chances and opportunities and signs to stay positive and do the right thing and they completely blow it, sounds like at some stages in his life he was spoilt and thought everything was just going to fall into his hands it kind of sounds like he felt entitled got lazy and had too much fun when he should’ve been focusing, I’m trying not to go to hard on bruh bearing in mind he was still very young but he made a lot of very dumb decisions like buying jewels and jerseys but yeah sad really, I have more to say but it will come across as disrespectful so 🤐 but anywho salute to bruh he clearly made some legendary moves or he wouldn’t be on the pod 💪🏾.

Lenny Cooke was ranked higher than LeBron James & Carmelo Anthony in High School at one point. Glad he is still alive to tell his story on Maino's platform.

Lenny was just immature. He's really never taking the responsibility for his actions. Yes he was a great talent, but he was WAY TOO high himself as opposed to humility! I'm happy Maino addressed that in some form.
