Sister. Your videos are super simple to follow. Though we make kitchri differently in Fiji, almost all of the dishes you share are what I grew up with. Right down to the barfi we refer to as Fiji ke barfi. Thank you for sharing such recipes and giving all of us a feeling of home 💜💜💜

Thanks for the video. We have always cooked this in Trinidad (split peas and rice) and so have my friends and we are not of East Indian descent. I don't know if the people who are saying these are younger people. I am way older than you are and it was always a staple in our home. Everybody I know cooked it. We also put salted pig tails in it. I don't recall us using turmeric and carrots. What we did different was to add the rice after we boiled the peas, pigtails and seasoning with enough water for the rice, so the flavor of the liquid seasoned the rice. If more seasoning was needed, we then added it along with some butter. We did not use all the artificial things like soup mix, etc. We always added some finely diced pumpkin for all cook up rice dishes and stewed peas dishes. Makes a great difference in the texture and taste.

I have to make this, do u have any tips for if the split peas very hard?
@TasteofTrini
@TasteofTrini 8 жыл бұрын
+adanna o'brady Hey, if the only thing I can say is to add more water to the pot and let it cook longer, however, it will result with you having extremely over-cooked rice. That's why it's best to boil the split peas well before you add it to the pot. Hope this was helpful.
@islandgirl3330
@islandgirl3330 5 жыл бұрын
You can try soaking it the night before and using a pressure cooker. I do find that the peas take a very long to get soft these days. They are not like what we used to get before. The only two that cooks quickly are the lentil peas and lime beans.

As you mention Diwali you took me back 60 Years ago when Trinidad Hindu community was 100 % Vaishnava (Worshipers of Vishnu (KRISHNA AND RAMA) The Mothers would put Kagar in the eyes of their daughters, Radha rani and her Gopies would put Kajar in their eyes as a form of beauty. We were reminded of Brindaban (Brinda means Tulsie and ban means a grove. ) There was not a single Hindu family without a Tulsie plant. Around 1980's Indian politicians came to Trinidad and polluted the the religion and place the Shiva Linga and Parbati Yoni and killed Sita and Rama. They introduced Shiviteeism .

In Trinidad and Guyana it means people of Indian origin. It get confusing no matter what term you use. West Indian means anyone from the English Caribbean countries, which includes Indians

never seen anyone put soup mix.. we usually add the tumeric to the boiling dhal and use that water to cook the kitchree... then chunkay the pot with fry geer, garlic, hot pepper and curry leaves. this is a super modern recipe. the triditional recipe doesnt have salt butter, celery stalk or bell peppers.

Taste of Trini originally this was a recipe the poor uses to make a meal. Hence the very basic ingredients in the traditional recipe. Overtime i has evolved to using more modern ingredients. Back in the day it didnt have salt butter, soup mix and the likes. The only seasoning was salt, garlic, onion, geera, hot pepper and banania from the yard and coconut milk from the tree outside.. cooking on fire side taste best!!
