I am not sure I understood the explanation of why gold is not considered a Tier 1 asset by the Commercial Banks. The reason given by the discussion is that it is not instantly transferable - i.e. taking a minimum of 6 hours to clear on deals - did I interpret this explanation correctly. Then with the advent of the LBMA digitizing gold - this should jump the hurdle of transaction delay and allow for gold to be treated as a Tier 1 asset by the commercial banking sector.

@@CjplusLj Thank you for that explanation. I did ask copilot for the reason why the BIS now classifies gold as a Tier 1 asset and the commercial banks do not. According to copilot the BASEL 111 reclassification of gold as a risk free asset is apparently only a guideline at the international level and not enforceable at the local level. Therefore, as you say above, the commercial banks have rules imposed upon them. This implies the government is deliberately intervening (and working with the commercial banks) perhaps in order to keep the gold price low.
