Nice tutorial. I've been learning waterstart and the first time was a pain. The second time was much fine. One important hint that was passed to me was to start with medium/low power and keep an eye on the board just just when the kite passes at 01 : 00 or 11 : 00 to have the feeling of the board and get up on a controlled manner. I wish someone told me that sooner. Also, to keep some power when you put the board on , you could just pull the bar (but eventually it will stall) or just lock on the middle with you right hand it at 11:00 which I find much easier. Anyway, great video ;)

If I can make a suggestion to beginners, I believe that the most difficult thing about kite is conciliate the two motion, kite and board... So before starting, if you really whant to try kite, start with wakeboard (is better with cable instead of behind the ship because there are no waves) , it is very easy in comparison, you just need to concentrate on your balance over the water, and you need so little time to learn riding, I am talking about 10 20 min and you go. Instead in kite new riders have to learn 2 things at once kite (that btw is very difficult if you don't have experience) and balance on the board, and so it is very slow to learn because you sum the errors of both. I did like this (and I am not a pro wakeboarder, I went only 2 times, couple ours in total), and when i started kite the only thing I had to worry about was learning how to control the kite, result: at the second our I was riding, 4th our I was going upwind, so I did not waste a lesson. I am speaking about 2 weeks ago, now I have my stuff and I am riding "solo".
@EpicGust4 жыл бұрын
COngrats yu riding solo! Cool stuff :) In my experience, wakeboard helps but not that much as we would think. And the reason is the following - on wakeboard you are on the board pretty much till you follow the cable. Slight edging, so you follow the pull. If you do this in the kite you either will lose power and get slack on the lines or (if you keep moving the kite consistently to don't make the first stated mistake) you end up going downwind. In kitesurf basically, you consistently "brake" or edge. If you able to get enough power doing just standup and short braked rides, once you stand with a slightly stretched leg you will almost go crosswind if not upwind - as you started the whole thing with feeling the need for leaning back. Wakeboarders tend to lean back towards the end of the board, not towards the heelside edge- they do that only in turns or before raleys. It is not easy to make them unlearn this habit! The so called balance need to created here by creating power + get up and lean on your harness (brake/edge with the board and that will make you do that). For some people - i do suggest to go to wakeboard, but fairly this is less than 10%! If you use the kite right and you do the same with your body i suggest you will get there in 10-15 tries! It is all about your instructor actually. Proper guidance will take you there without the wake experience. Keep riding, and if u like give a go to this method(or tell to a waterstarting friend), you might will understand my point too :) Enjoy the powerzone!
@leonardo84614 жыл бұрын
@@EpicGust Nice to see your response :) I agree with you about the movement, of course is completley different in the 2 disciplines, infact I did not say learn to wake very good, my point was that if you try just a few times wakeboard to get the balance, at least you have the feeling of water below you, that is a completley new sensation for a lot of beginner...when you start to kite I notice that your main focus is on the kite, so it is difficult to understand what you are doing wrong with your lower body part. Of course I just started so I can not teach anything, my opinion it's based on my personal experience, but for me the balance over the board wasn't a problem at all :) ....instead I saw a lot of people (on my spot or on youtube) unable to stand up and being thrown directly downwind (the direction of the pull) exacly what happens the first time you try wake, when you have no balance. Surely this is just my opinion :) In conclusion I believe that having just a little idea of what the balance over water is going to be, can lead you to faster improvement, because you can focus more on the kite...I mean, for me was easy to change my posture and adapt from wake to kite, but as I said I am not a pro wakeboarder, I don't have any particular habit. A really good suggestion for any beginner about any activity is: don't do what it works for you at the moment, follow the right tecnique, always ...so for example you learn wake, pay attention to the differences between wake and kite, ask your instructor, and apply the right tecnique, even if you are able to go anyway (probably you are less smoother than what you think you are). I will enjoy the powerzone thx, nice videos btw, I am from Italy, maybe I will try Como or Garda, I saw your rewiew!!! Ciao!
@EpicGust4 жыл бұрын
@@leonardo8461 Of course i reply :D this topic is my life i love to change ideas! In fairness - i did exactly the same, went to wakeboarding like 10 times before dared to take my kite skills on the water. i was a land kiter and waaay afraid of water back in time. Can you please explain how to maintain speed right after getting on the board? I do manage to bring the kite down to nice angle to get me sliding, but after a few meters I don't know what the combination of sheethin/swinging the kite is 😬. Thanks in advance! 🙏❤️
@EpicGust Жыл бұрын
Sounds like all you have to do is repeat the first dive. When getting up and sliding you feel you need more power, steer the kite back up high, while leaning back slightly and repeat the first dive to gain that speed that will keep you rolling. This you can do any time you losing speed or if you about to sink. hope that helps.

Just extending the leg already in the water on the side i want to start made all the difference for me. You dont really need a lot of power to start and you will never owerpower the kite.
@EpicGust3 ай бұрын
Thats true but i theach it this way for a good reason - If you do stretch your leg in the water already and you not quick enough to send the stroke you will start turning one way.. same if you ride stop - sink- and keep thenfront leg straight- you twist immediately. The start and the finish position therefore has to be the ball like one. Thats my experience with many students.

This is the one and only Waterstart video any new kite surfer needs to see. I can say this from 1st hand experience having started in Egypt in Sept. Now, I have mastered the dark are of the waterstart. My problem however, being a long time windsurfer, is feeling the board. Getting the right amound of edge is something I am really struggling with. Either I edge so hard that I go nowhere fast or I am zooming of downwind at unbelivable speed. Trying to find the middle ground - well f*** me I am at a loss. Should I perhaps try a larger / different board? Any tips are welcome.
@EpicGust2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Winkley! SHortly - despite what it looks like for you, your problem isn't the board. If you are able to create just enough power then with a bit of a balance, and body swing you up and riding. When you zoom downwind with the light of speed you used way too much power - obviously. i just run a free lesson section on my other video, go ahead apply, and I lead your through in detail!

Thanks for the video. I’m looking forward to trying this but wondered if you could clarify the timing when I should roll forward onto the board. Is it just after I’ve completed the ‘small dive’, after I’ve completed the ‘small dive’ and whilst whilst I fly the kite back to 12 o’clock or is it when the kite is back at 12:00 o’clock? Thanks! Mark
@EpicGust4 жыл бұрын
Glad u asked! You do roll forward when u feel the power building up from the kite side. As the kite dives you will get this so basically you accept the pull and roll with it. (instead of resist or brake against it) as the dive completed you should be riding. If not you try with a slightly stronger dive. If you riding start leaning back after a second, till u still have speed! 👉Let me know once you tried!

great tutorial Gust! it is a good thing to compare with car driving, as a fresh newbie in this sport (10h lessons so far and few waterstarts) I myself compared it with motorbike riding as I am a rider for over 20 years. Yes we all see them do wheelies and knee down... but it aint like that. you have to approach with finesse and learn how to achieve skills and mainly get used and familiar to your gear. Take the time and follow the right and good advice... As I have seen many hours of tutorials already this one was special and got me on a point none of the others did. seen it more than once now and will surely see it again before I get back in the water, being from belgium is to cold now to get out there... keep on the good (and funny) work and enjoy this great sport

I can do water starts now but soon as I start riding I lose all that pull from the down loop!! I zig zag it all over the damn place but it won't keep pulling once I get up! I'm using a 12m kite in 13 mph winds. I've tried in 23 mph winds but it's just too dangerous and that 12 meter tries to take me airborne! I aint ready for that yet. I just want to know why I can't continue! Initially after getting up it feels perfect and the board carries me well and it's popping across the water but then it quits pulling. I try to ride crosswind as best I can but doesn't help much. If I edge hard it seems to make it worse.. any advice will be appreciated!

Getting up but when my kite stop lifting me i Just fall down, i think i go to much downwind directly, Any tips

Hmm thats can be cos of many things, mostly cos you follow the kite for too long, once you stabilize the kite you need to lean back to create tension. and here we arrive to the next topic, riding upwind straight after the waterstart :))

at 8:18 in your video, when you mentioned that stop the kite first, then sheet out, at what kite position shall I sheet out or it doesn't matter? Shall I sheet the bar out and hold it until the kite reaches 12 o'clock? then I sheet in the bar, dive the kite and repeat it again? Thanks for your advise.
@EpicGust3 ай бұрын
stopping the dive reqires tension, so until the kite is not paralelly movng with the ground and not towards the ground, you better hold some tension, when the kite is stabilised, THEN sheet out IF needed!

Light wind start is a challenge.
@EpicGust4 жыл бұрын
I bet it is! Well just a short tip, let the kite drift off a bit to the opposite site (like left if you plan to go right) Dive it hard, and as the kite goes down get up and get some speed, as you turned the kite for the upwards move start edging/leaning back gradually, and repeat this like 3 times till you get speed. Very briefly this is how you do it :)
