Thanks for putting this vid up. It's really educational, especially the comments of kiters who have experienced this before and tell us what the dos and donts are in certain situ's and the reasons behind it. Learning a lot from you all. Thanks.

Although it's an old vid, but besides the fact that the rider didn't hesitate to use his quick release, i wouldn't consider this a good educational example. Squalls NEVER come out of nowhere. They're always visible way ahead of time. Latest the 180° windshift should've made him nervous and think about the weather situation. Obviously he didn't, even though he crashed on the beach. From my point of view this dangerous situation could've easily been avoided.

Still one of the flashiest kitevideos, specially with the infected mushroom track on it :D

Sudden change of wind direction is sure sign of weather front passing through. All Kiters should know this and head for deep water or ideally land with kite out of the sky before the front hits and all hell breaks loose. Wind changed 180 deg and you went back out without expecting a squall. Avoidable. Glad you're safe but hope the lesson is learned. Any Kiters, divers or other water users can learn from this as that 180 shift is your early warning sign (it can be any sudden large change in angle).

yeah in front of every cloud front is +15knts. but still manageable. and you will generally find a lull in wind just afterwards. so make the most of the wind and go upwind. then travel downwind after it passes.

i don´t actually know what you mean with "getting teabagged"... maybe it´s because i´m from austria i don´t know ;-) But what i saw in the video was that at the moment the squall hit at about 4:13 min you weren´t able to controll your board because your kite was too high... if you kept it near to the water so you would have had more pressure on the edge of the board so u could have controlled your riding even if you are fully overpowered But of course it was an awesome ride and i´m glad u didnt break ur arms and legs landing on the beach. Greetings from austria

+Gregor Angerer Unless you are on a 50cm board with as much rocker as a soup bowl you won't be able to hold down 50 knots of power with a 9m kite. It will you pull off the edge.

Even with a good bow kite (switchblade), fully depowered, low flying at the edge, a 9m will rip you off the edge at 50 knots.

You can't get lofted if you can get the kite into the water. Get aas FAR OUT as you can, away from shore. Lay on your stomach and dive the kite towards the water (it'll yank you quickly down wind). Once it's in the water hold it there.. even just one wingtip in the water. You'll get dragged towards shore but it'll happen slowly and you'll have time to wave for someone to grab the kite, or pull the release without getting lofted onto shore. Pulling the release near shore with kite high in very high winds is playing Russian roulette. I did that once 10 years ago.. the release malfunctioned and did NOT release. I was dragged through moving automobile traffic on my stomach at mach 5 and could have easily been killed! I did this method years later and rode out a 50knot squall on a 9m kite without issue. Just slowly dragged towards shore until squall passed. Other riders saw me and were waiting to catch my kite when I came in.

It was bang onshore, everyone was reasonably close to the shore to start with. Winds were around the 20-25mph then it switched to cross shore in a few second.....pretty much whilst in the air. Obviously since then we now get out as soon as we suspect something like this may happen...and it has many times since. 60mph is only one thing you can do (on 9m)release it onto single line asap

This is just a strong squall / weather front coming through. We see these all the time coming last in Cornwall when we are kiting. (Especially in winter) I’ve seen much worse. It gets more interesting when lightning starts flashing and oversized hail stones start hitting you in 50kt wind. (I had to immediately use my break out system, ditch kite and cover my head with my arms to stop getting bruises or eye damage)

Great video, and great to see the very safe handling of the kite. As I have a very low risk appetite, I would probably have stopped kiting by the first sign of the front coming. It is not even safe to keep the kite low, because you may suddenly find yourself with the kite placed right i the powerzone, and then things will go south very fast, especially if you are not prepared for this to happen.
@hamishptwc7253
@hamishptwc7253 7 жыл бұрын
correct, know your limits. for some people 50knts is still within their limit. but make sure you know your own. for every year kiting add 4knts. Starting from 20.

@MrBlastkiteboarding
@MrBlastkiteboarding 10 жыл бұрын
Ha, normally I would agree with keeping the kite low however this squall hit so fast and so strong that you would have had no chance to keep an edge with the kite down low. The only option was to release the kite onto safety line.

kiteboarding is a safe sport in any kind of steady wind if you use the right size kite. riding with a bunch of noobs on a heavily infested beach can do the same damage.

why not keeping the kite very low at 9/3 ?? that's why I do went i get over powered during squalls, i think keeping it at 12 is the most dangerous thing to do,.

@MrBlastkiteboarding 3 жыл бұрын
Obviously yes that is what you do, when you get the chance but if you have NO warning and also the wind completely changed direction. Everyone was hit by this sudden squall, kites released everywhere.

You have to get the balance right. Too much wind and you're in danger of being wiped out, or worse, being pulled hundreds of feet into the air and maybe killed. BTW. Good kitting skills here..but awful so called 'music'.

You have no throw on that bar, you have no choice but to punch out to depower. I would never feel comfortable with that, I want to let go of the bar and depower a ton. Great video~! Lot's to learn from watchin it

+Jon Schwartz i assume he had a 2010 kite. Proper barthrow for 99% depower didnt really exist back then afaik. Even the masters of barthrow (cabrinha) didn't have it back then.

Слова Dangerous Storm в названии совершенно лишние. На 11 м2 в конкретном передозе можно катать максимум до 15 м/с. По внешним признакам дует 8-10 м\с, короче никаким штормом там не пахнет.

thats not bar extended out... thats everyday riding. riding with the bar hard against the stopper, and pulling hard on one side to keep it off the water, thats when the kite is overpowered. I didn't see any of that going on here. I see you still doing front rolls after the squall, thats how you got teabagged, you can't edge whilst you are in the air :) your kite is too high, at the point you pulled your release, I would have been going heading back the other way for another run, lol :)
@MrBlastkiteboarding

oh 2010 kite, sorry my bad, not a fair comparison to my experiences, I only started 2 yrs ago with brand new kites. yeah my bar was fully out hard against the stopper and depowered for most of today for 3 hours, scary, but really no problem.
@MrBlastkiteboarding
@MrBlastkiteboarding 7 жыл бұрын
No worries, these kites had way longer throw than most and even when riding overpowered you'd rarely need the bar fully extended out.
