I notice he uses a leash - is that safe?

Leashes are always a hot topic of contention! For most people kite-surfing at beach breaks and less extreme locations, then they are not needed but when you are riding in bigger, heavier waves, a leash can be safer than not having one. Often if you crash being able to get back to your board and up and riding again as quickly as possible is vital, before the next waves dumps on you. But leashes obviously add the possibility for another accidents but you have to way up both side of it. It's a personal choice and probably something more suited to advanced riders at more advanced locations.
