Watching your video pulling that trailer I think you don't have to worry about pulling that thing from west coast to east coast, it sat that trailer good. No bouncing, shaking or wobbling. Nice job, can't wait to see that Yamaha purring through the skies. 😎👍

Be careful yourtail wheel doesn't climb out of the channel as you are winching. Mine does and I made a 'sled' for the tailwheel with a plastic bottom to slide up the ramp. That way the wheel is not turning. I enjoyed your video and got some great information. Thanks!

Dihedral in the wing/ Fuel tank position to allow gravity to push fuel toward the Fuselage is the reason the fuel caps are outboard. If the fuel cap were inboard you would leave empty space in the tank when filling it up. Love the videos. Wish I could build my Bearhawk as fast as you have built that KitFox.

As a previous comment, this is one of the best build vidoes out there, along with Mike Patey's vidoes. Just wondering if it might have been easier to make the tail wheel channel lay flat, Then lift the tail and have some supports to hold it up. As long as you had some way to temperary block off the fuel tank vents until loading was complete. thinking it would eliminate the whole winch thing. but then again you just thrive on engineering your own stuff. Nice to see!!!!!!!!! its always easy for these cooments after someone else has paved the road!! Lastly......you should name the trailer OCD !!!!!!!!!!! This is not a dig on you what so ever. Cant wait for the next vidoe!!!!!!!!

The DAR brought up a good point about the first flight not being a public spectacle. Although I would love to have people come out to see it, the added pressure of disappointing the crowd can lead to decisions that are not in the best interest of the goal of the first flight being performed as safe as possible.

If you want to save a bit of money, instead of upgrading the winch, you could try a 2:1 configuration, assuming there was enough cable. That might be enough to get you over the hump. Amazing project! I hope some day soon I will be able to embark on a similar journey. May you have calm winds and clear skies!

Hey Bryan, As always, great vid and really ingenious design thinking. I'm sure you've already considered but if you're going to re-winch the rear end anyway, would an extendable "tailskid/tailstand" be a good idea to keep the tongue down and eliminate any chance of the tongue moving around during load/unload. Also might be an area to include a block and tackle to improve the winch strength without needing a bigger motor. Maybe the tongue is already heavy enough though. Thanks again for the great series. Cant wait to see the flying vids

I built a trailer for my Kitfox 1, back in '87. I carried it backwards, which kept the highway bugs off the windshield. The ramp height was such, that when the mains were on the ground, and the tailwheel still on the trailer, the plane was level, making folding the wings out much easier. I used a torsion bar axle off a Airstream trailer. With all my tie downs optimized, all the bugs worked out, I could have it off the trailer and being taking off in a leisurely 10 minutes.

Nice Build! A few points to ponder... 1) Weight and balance is important. You don't want to stress your hitch. 2) You might want to mount your new winch inboard (for weight and balance) and redirect with a pulley. 3) Your exposed wing-roots might need aerodynamic plugs. The pressure at highway speeds might rupture your wing skins.

Carter is fortunate to have an industrious father who is willing to teach him things. The trailer design is clever and efficient. Would there be any advantage to mounting the winch lower and have the cable/dyneema roll over a roller at the ramp angle?

Maybe someone else mentioned it, but fuel caps are outboard on the tanks, because the diehedral in the wings puts the outboard end of the tank higher then the inboard end. If they were on the inside, you would have less fuel capacity. Nice build by the way! Jim

Bryan, I didn't understand the issue with the tail wheel shock. Seems like many tail-wheel-first landings would put more weight on the tail than you would have in any parked/trailered configuration with the wings folded back, right? Also I couldn't quite make out what solution you built to avoid the issue. Thanks, as always, for the wonderful videos Bryan.

One good reason (I can think of), for the filler cap being outboard, is if you spill any fuel it is less chance of getting fuel on the lexan and destroying it. A friend spilled some fuel on their door and wiped it off straight away and it crazed within an hour. Trailering and aircraft is the most stressfull thing for me, not so much from the pulling it along but it is the other road users that do not apear to have any regard to what you are pulling (they cut in very near and give you very little room).

Bryan, Love your trailer. Thinking about building one myself. Just one question: I thought it is highly recommended to support the tail for travel so that all that weight on the tail and the jouncing of the trailer don't have to be taken by the tailwheel spring suspension. Don't you need a support block of some sort under the rear of the airframe tail? Some folks even pad it with foam, etc. for a little give.

After MUCH searching, I FINALLY found a video of trailering an ultralight plane. I just bout a SkyRaider 1 experimental Ultralight. Im needing to build a trailer for it to get to and from airport 22 miles away. I LOVE this design. But I have a couple questions. 1. How long to unload and reload BY YOUR SELF? 2. I too think they should be trailered forward. Thoughts on loading from rear of trailer (winch upfront), then lifting rear to "level" plane?

From experience! Little to know fuel in the wings and fold the wings after you load the plane on the trailer, you may not have had room at your house I understand. Mind them upper longerons !!!😉, all the best with your first flights from Ireland.
