Thanks for all that classic Hana- Barbara cartoon music. As I listened I could imagine the many parts of the cartoons they went with. All were classic tunes. Too bad almost all of todays cartoons don’t have good original music. Of course not many of todays cartoons have the feel of the old H-B cartoons. Everything now has to be educational in some way not just fun stunts like in the old days.

Fun nostalgia. I like that even a simple little bridge is included at 3:27 here. I was tempted to buy the Pic-a-nic Basket back in the 1990's but never did. But I did once find a CD of Hanna Barbera Cartoon Sound Effects, which was a hoot.

Mr. Curtin was a big jazz fan, hence you hear many jazzy cues in the HB cartoons. Top Cat is a big one for Jazz scoring by Hoyt Curtin.

Hanna-Barbera later "reworked" the cue at 2:48 (orignally used for "THE JETSONS") into the "Josie" theme in 1970.

Barry I. Grauman I’ve heard this same music cue in the Winsome Witch cartoon “How Now Cinderella,” in the scene where Winnie uses her magic to start a fire as two children, one named Eddy, had to stay in her house during a storm.

H-B used Hoyt's cues, regardless of what they were originally used in, in virtually all of their other cartoons for years! It's that kind of music cue that sets the scene for a relaxed mood.......

The use of African and South American vibes and percussion is SO important to the sound of this music and the lively tone of the cartoon in general, it's amazing.
@larkatmic8 жыл бұрын
African, and South American vibes??? Sounds all American to me.
@Yapostadodat8 жыл бұрын
I realize the production and musicians are from the United States but the marimbas and the congas of Hoyt's music put Hanna-Barbera in a class of it's own. On par or maybe even better than Carl Stalling's work for Looney Tunes. Imagine Yogi walking without a funky rhythm section to his footsteps.
@larkatmic8 жыл бұрын
Yes, On its own, Marimbas and congas would sound African, and Latin American. As with any specific instrument being used, one could say that violins, and their Italian, Euro influence was crucial to the sound of this specific music. But they aren't used independently from the whole. But when used in combination, the lite music of the time, created a truly American style of sound. It IS American. Created by Americans, influenced by Americans, and then emulated by the rest of the world. Like most things American. I sure do miss this American background music. Now, I have to shop with Aerosmith playing lol

I'm looking for a particular underscore which plays only in moments of extreme panic. It's very loud and uses a horn / ringing instrument. I heard it in several cartoons, but I remember it best in Top Cat when he assaults and tries to pull the beard from a Russian art collector, thinking he's a disguised criminal. Or in some big gun fights, maybe in "Sergeant Top Cat"?

It's not in the Public Domain. It is the property of Time-Warner. The life of the composer is not the issue since it was work for hire and is corporately owned.

As a female fan of this stuff may I please pledge to you my live firstborn as thanks for this collection... Oh and PrimatePunk, I doubt it, but I wonder about track 2 -- it's based on a famous English folk song which definitely IS public domain: I think Coventry Gardens? Hoyt didn't "transform" it enough for the legal definition of copyright. He just switched it from major to minor, so at least that one (found at 00:17) is public domain, whether HB/Turner or Rhino agree or not. If they tried to enforce that cue in court, strong likelihood they'd lose.
