To people who call it abuse: it's water not acid! Of course he's crying because he's scared - everything is scary for the first time but it doesn't mean it's bad for him! Some cats love bathing but they'll never know if you don't start with a kitten. Sure it can be a discomfort, but only that, it's not a torture. Also, a cat can't clean itself.

Whenever i bathe my cats i always says to them "its ok honey its ok","your doing great sweetie!","thats a good kitty" or "not for long love...just a little wash!" because its the things that'll make my cats calm yknow and to show that how much i love 'em! A little nice,soft confrontational talk wont hurt and even though it wont work much but at least it keeps 'em calm and they dont struggle much

was that the absolute 2nd time you've bathed her after being dried earlier? if so, wow that's almost 100% improvement except for that 1 rogue meow towards the end, lol. do you find that it helps to talk to them the way that you did? my cat was born with a very nervous disposition so I'm clueless what to do with her, lol. did all the cats you've bathed get used to it eventually? she's a beauty!

Did any of you actually finish watching the vid? To all those poor chaps who keep screaming abuse, the kitten actually becomes quiet after a while. Stops trying to run away and stops 'screaming'. It's the kittens first bath, geez calm down pepz; you're louder than the cat! Think of it this way, humans know how to clean themselves. But can everyone maintain a clean perfect 100% hygiene? You make it so that cats are 100% independent. Children are sent to Dentists where they kick and scream like it's the end of the world, shall I call that abuse too? Or forcing children to get huge needles poked into their body? We can handle ourselves, so I guess we have all been abused. Really? We got ISIS and starving children in Africa, famine, children under domestic violence, animals being hit and abused and you sit here shouting abuse at a person giving a kitten a bath. You really need to get your priorities straight, focus more on your own family for a start; if you don't have one maybe there is a reason why here.

Actually, a gland on the back of a cat's neck, where their mother's will pick them up and carry them from, releases something like adrenaline, but with the reverse affect. It calms the cat. I've worked with an animal shelter, and when we had a litter of scared kittens dropped off, only way we could calm them down, hold them on the back of their necks and stroke them. All of them have a home now. One has a home with me. :) She's happy and healthy and loves having her neck held like that.

actually, when they get older, they can no longer clean themselves right. i have a cat thats older than me and he starts to smell bad because he cant bathe himself right. we have to give him a bath every now and again. he cries, but he doesnt really squirm and we're very gentle when we bathe him. he handles it just find and smells a whole lot better afterward.

Kittens are able to be held that way; they have very little nerves in that area, therefore it doesnt cause any pain. They also have loose skin, which is obviously for the grip of the mother.

I think the cat should first be let to introduce to water in a very shallow pool where the cat's paws somewhat get wet. Put eg. a toy in the water and let the cat get familiar with water.

your point? i stated that holding the scruff 'reduces' panic behavour not get rid of it all, its what the mother cat does to teach them. i have 8 cats that are all fixed and range from a few months to 13 year of age and i learned the hard way that holding the scruff on kittens is the best way. best to teach them when they are young so they don't get all scared of water when they become too old to hold the scruff. be my guest to name a easier way if you know one but i'v tried almost everything.

Apparently it's mostly for the reason that they will get cold if they get wet. They also don't like getting it in their face as it can get into their ears and cause infections. So it just should be done with care and avoided as much as possible.

I agree with AngleLink, though I don't know about the calming chemicals but there is nothing wrong about grabbing the scruff of the cat, it is a way to keep the cat in control and to prevent you or the cat from getting hurt. I know this as a good friend of mind is a vet technician and she invited me in back and let me help with my cat's check up when we took my cat in for her shots. It helps them a lot when the cat is use to being handled by the scruff, the less the cat struggles the better.

Some cats like water, the reason house cats don't like water is because that it doesn't keep them warm in cool weather, but, in this video, it clearly shows the owner cleaning the cat off so it would be warm. Also, they don't like it because it would get in their face, this is why the owner made sure that it would not splash in their eyes.

She was not being horrible to this kitten. I didn't see anything but gentleness here. It was the kitten's first bath so of course it's going to cry. Cats need baths. It's good for them. The sooner they get accustomed to it the easier then experience will be.

Awe! My cats and my dog get a bath once a month w/ ear cleaning, claw clipping, brushing, wormer pill, and topical. Boo is Long Haired with oily skin, so a bath really helps to keep his coat clean and really lessens the amount of shedding all over my house. If you bathe your animals regular like myself please dilute the shampoos one table to one cup of water. Or just get a wash cloth specially made for pet bathing. Looks like a mit with rubber teeth. Use that and just water no shampoos.

Actually, she's holding it's scruff, which is a loose bit of skin with very few nerves that kittens have in order to make carrying easier for their mother.
