@Rank.Roundup Жыл бұрын
Cat rescuer and bottle kitten foster here - if you’re that concerned about #1, you can absolutely supplement his feedings with formula. Prime weaning time is 5-6 weeks, so make sure you have plenty of canned kitten food around for post-surgery, though they’ll likely still be nursing on mom some at that point. She’ll take it at her own pace. As for giving up two, declawing is absolutely cruel and will cause the cats a lifetime of pain and often behavioral problems. The issue is you never know where they’ll end up if you surrender them to the SPCA, and they might end up in horrible homes anyway. I can’t tell you how many times the rescues I foster for have adopted out cats, and they come back in horrible shape. We all have explicit no declaw contracts that people have to sign, but the cats get returned declawed all the time. It’s horrible. The only way to know for sure that they’re in a good home is to keep them. I have six rescues, and honestly, you’re still just feeding them and cleaning the litter box. Four wouldn’t really feel that different than two. Obviously, only you know your circumstances, but it’s something to think about. I still worry about all the fosters I’ve had to let go every day.
@cynthiafialka Жыл бұрын
I give you a lot of credit. It must be so difficult to foster and not know how the cats/kitten will be treated by the people who adopt them. Hugs to you!
@nonfictionfeminist Жыл бұрын
I fully agree with that discussion towards the end of being sad about people giving up their pets once they have babies. I'm very much of the mind that your pet was there first, and before introducing a child to the home, you should know more about how your pet might react to that, and take the time to build the relationship between the pet and the child. When we got our first cat, we were told that he had an aggression to children. As it turns out, he doesn't have an aggression towards children, he's just trying to protect himself when children who haven't been taught better chase him and hit him because they think it's fun
@bethanygilbertson Жыл бұрын
It can be so hard for cats to be introduced to children sometimes but I totally agree, I can't imagine getting rid of our fur babies just because I had children! We worked really hard to prepare our cats for children before we had them by pushing their tolerance for harassment quite a bit from the start. They now put up with a lot from us (and are probably more tolerant of the kids) as a result. They also know they can just leave a situation if they don't like it. Of course we also worked to foster a relationship between the cats and our children from birth and as our children grow we continually work with them on how to better interact with the cats. I trust our cats (in general) to avoid rather than display aggression when they feel uncomfortable though they will use body language like batting a hand away or gentle nipping at a hand to say "No thank you" as necessary and for me that's a sign I need to intervene if I haven't already done so when my children are not old enough to receive the message. My 3.5 yo is starting to understand how to interpret their body language. My 1 yo is actually very gentle (and easy for them to escape). Both of our kids really adore our cats and the cats seem to like them and accept them as household members.

Agreed! Though I have to say, when we announced our pregnancy, so many people immediately asked what we were going to do with our cat because surely we weren’t going to keep her. The thought had never crossed my mind and thankfully I’m a pretty rational and confident person and it didn’t get to me. But having kids comes with so many worries and insecurities and I can totally see soon-to-be parents being pushed towards rehoming their pet when everyone tells them they may hurt the baby (which in most cases is not an issue at all)

Kittens are my absolute favorite thing - I am living for your videos with them. They are so lucky to have you looking out for them. It is normal for them to 'fight' a lot; this is how they learn appropriate behavior and bite inhibition. Orphan kittens that grow up without this normal interaction have a much higher chance of developing behavioral issues. If mom decides to stop feeding them early, the Royal Canin Baybcat food is really good for the itty bitty babies. My last orphan kitten was never able to nurse on a bottle but was able to start this food at 3 weeks.

Hey Emily, I know this video has been up for a minute, but I just wanted say I just had surgery (like five days ago) to remove my gallbladder and the first few days are tough, but it gets better! The gas pains sucked, I would get gas meds and a heated blanket would help those pains a lot, especially the blanket! Otherwise my issues were some pain at where the surgery happened (my gallbladder, upper abdomen ), just stay on your pain meds around the clock the first few days and take it super easy. Make sure to have someone helping you out (I’m not bending much right now) so you don’t have to push yourself to be safe. As I approach a week out I’m feeling better and enjoying not being in pain every time I eat! 🎉

You might need to get a pee removal spray, the cat will keep spraying there. He may try to leave his scent on all the enterences, including windows if he can get to them, since he knows there is a un spayed cat. Mothballs sometimes helps to keep them away they hate the smell, but it doesn't always work. There are probably some deterrent sprays you can get too. I'm pretty sure that its illegal in every province except Ontario to declaw cats. I'm pretty sure its a newer law in PQ maybe the last few years. I know that Atlantic Canada its been illegal for like 10+ years. #3 wants to be a hunter, if you get a mouse he will end it! They are too cute.

Kittens will fight often and it's good for them, they need to learn how to defend themselves ☺️ I had a cat who had kittens in my parents' basement (when I used to live with them) and she brought them one by one upstairs, which made sense as she had given birth in a very dusty section of that basement (my parents were unfortunately neglectful). The second time she literally gave birth on my parents' bed early in the morning. They hadn't created a safe space for her to give birth, but fortunately it went well both times, all her kittens were healthy and we sold them for 10 bucks to people from our neighbourhood (we had put up posters all around). Can't wait for your reading vlogs! Will you do one for A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (what a terrible title lol)? I've yet to read it but the reviews I've watched didn't convince me to do so. 😅

The kittens are adorables ! But yeah people requesting free cat/kitten on public facebook group are not always the best. Most of the time they juste don't want to pay for an animal... meaning they won't pay for care expense like sterilise them. Going to the SPCA would be a good idea since they will fix them before letting people adopted them. End since they don't let go of kittens for free it hold off non serious people. But maybe there is people aroud you that are interested in adopting one ? You could still have news of the babies in that case. Seeing the kittens remind me that when i was young i wanted to be a breeder. I wanted to live with all the baby animal in the world 😂 And good luck with your surgery !

Great video! I love the kitten footage. Too bad about the deadbeat dad peeing on your door - there’s a product called Nature’s Miracle that will knock out the smell. It’s an enzymatic cleaner so it can wipe it out so that even other cats can’t detect it. There’s an awesome book called Think Like A Cat that has great ideas for discouraging kitties from hovering around the front door (and on countertops or anywhere else you don’t want them hanging out). That will help with mama cat trying to arrange hookups with her irresponsible boyfriend. If she asks to borrow your car keys, the answer is no!! Also, don’t give away cats for free. You never know what people are going to do with them. It’s way better for someone to have to pay for them; then you know they really want them as pets and family members. Hope this isn’t advice overload!!! You are doing great!!!

Emily, do you prefer to speak in English or French with the cats? I'm curious hahaha

Mostly English but I do give them French nicknames! I've been calling #3 "p'tit bedon" (lil belly) because he's so chunky!

The ballad of songbirds and snakes is a pretty good read if you go in knowing snow is a butthole. I went in without reading or watching the movies in years and was kinda surprised, but looking back on it it feels like the author kept snow the same instead of a Massive change.

To deter cats, I've been told by a few people they hate the smell of oranges??
