I had thought (at the time) that the Origins/Evolution documentary was a career finale for them. Then they came back live ..... then this. I don't know how Morgan doesn't blow out her voice!

In a podcast called Life is Peachy she talks about how during touring at Ozzfest she found a technique which made her screams sound nastier while not damaging her vocal chords. I think the earliest studio recording of this is in the Hed PE song "Feel Good" where she did guest vocals, followed of course by 'Oracle' and she has been improving on it ever since. You can hear a clear difference from her performance on 'Spit' where she was essentially just shouting at the top of her lungs. Edit: I just threw this video together, showcasing her evolution as a singer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWnYkqGhl9R4bJI

Also- I LOVE Mercedes’ background death metal vocals. They go perfectly with Morgan’s high pitched screams ❤

Mercedes is amazing. She gets low on her vocals. Her & Morgan have always been the heart of Kittie. They’ve seen so many changes within the band. And I think it definitely prevented them from progressing further. Now that they are older I really want to see what they can do. I would love to interview them. I have a million questions for them!

TOTALLY agree with you, Kittie is EXTREMELY important to metal!!!!! Kittie was also influenced by one of the first punk/metal influenced hard rock all girl teenage band of the mid 1970's The Runaways (w/ Joan Jett and Lita Ford). In fact, Kittie did a cover of their song "Fantasies" which was from the 1977 album "Queens of Noise". (other girl bands such as L7, Babes in Toyland, The Donnas, etc. were also influenced by the Runaways, the Donnas covered "Queens of Noise"). By 2000 Kittie picked up the torch and added to the history of females in Rock/Metal. Btw, you mentioned Morgan's clean vocals, I uploaded an acoustic version of "Funeral For Yesterday" performance that was dedicated to ex bassist Trish Doan (who passed away in 2017), it's an AMAZING performance and moving tribute!!! (R.I.P. Trish). I can't WAIT for the full Kittie album to be released by Sumerian Records!!!

I just watched the movie Jawbreaker yesterday as it’s one of my favorite’s. The Donna’s are in that movie & I loved them! Babes In Toyland were so good too. And L7, god I loved them! And the Runaway’s kinda started it all. I have lots of their vinyl records. I still listen to Cherry Bombs frequently. Love that song! I am so glad to hear you feel the same about Kittie. The video I watched was giving a rating I believe on how relevant to history of music Nu metal bands were. They said Kittie was a one year wonder and nobody knows who they are & they didn’t change anything at all. The funniest part about that statement is that they were the only all female metal band on that list. I was so mad about that. They paved the way for females to get into metal. And especially with harsh vocals. And I don’t have anyone in my friend group who listens to Kittie. So I just wanted to know if anyone thinks the same. I was so pissed at that guy lol I was yelling at the TV 🤬 Thank you so much for the acoustic version. I’m going to go listen right now 🤘

@@Metalheadmandi Oh I agree!!! Kittie was first and others followed like Arch Enemy and Otep and so many other all girl or female fronted Metal bands w/ harsh vocals, there are actually A LOT more nowadays, but here in America they get no play or recognition, SAME as 45 years ago when the Runaways were on the scene, such B.S.!!!!
@soulsvortex107 ай бұрын
@@no_onein2024Kittie were among the first but definitely not the first. Ever heard of Crisis? Not to mention the many female-fronted death metal bands from the early 90s like Mythic, Derketa, Nuclear Death, etc. Look up Nuclear Death - "Return of the Feasting Witch" from 1991. For the record I'm a HUGE Kittie fan but I also give credit where credit is due.

A hometown favourite. There was a time when you could see them alot around here, often near a house I used to live in.

Saw them at Ozzfest years and years ago and fell I’m love! Brackish stole my heart

I went to Ozzfest and saw them too. Brackish was so fun. Love that one. Charlotte & What I’ve wanted are my favorite. I miss Ozzfest & Vans Warped Tour. So bummed they aren’t doing either anymore 👎

Loved it! Idk how you can say they aren’t or weren’t important . These women did just as good if not better than any male group and seeing them like is an even better experience
@Metalheadmandi9 ай бұрын
Right? Especially in an all male dominated industry. They were in high school when they released their first album. And they definitely were one of the first doing harsh vocals. Imagine being in high school and playing shows with Slipknot and other huge bands. They are so important to metal 🤘 I’m so glad others feel that way too.

I completely understand what you’re hearing and the only conclusion I can come to is they sprinkled a massive handful of Dimmu Borgir on top. Melodically it has the undertone and vocally she channels Shagrath
@Metalheadmandi8 ай бұрын
Ok, now I’m gonna have to listen to Dimmu Borgir to see what that sounds like. I love this song but there was just a different sound. I’m so curious to see what other songs sound like from them.

Awesome review! The new album does have clean vocals, which will hopefully come out around Spring. I heard something akin to Opeth at the first bridge before the solo, some Pantera influence, but really I just think it’s their evolution. They were so underrated after their initial commercial success w/ Spit, but they’ve only gotten better and have progressed more than any band I can think of. I consider them alternative thrash metal w/ sprinkles of many different elements. Watch this performance from ‘99 and compare it to now, a lot of metal elitist say they sound the same as when they came out & I just can’t help but lol: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXaun2qeqKeags0si=DpfNFhHfaQB6CcJN

Oh wow….that video puts things in perspective. Ya, they’ve definitely progressed. I’ve seen Spit performed live & it was Fierce AF. I hope it’s finally time for Kittie to shine 🤘

@@Metalheadmandi Yeah it’s crazy that they sounded like this and a year later when they did Ozzfest, it’s 100x better. Touring extensively before Ozzfest w/ Slipknot really helped!
I need to listen. I’m so behind. Between the 2 releases, which one did you like better?
@soulsvortex107 ай бұрын
@@MetalheadmandiI know you were commenting to somebody else but having listened to both songs hundreds of times I would definitely say that "Eyes Wide Open" stands out for the riffing alone. Morgan's harsh vocals are like the cherry on top. "We Are Shadows" is a great song that I have learned to love over the last month but it's much different in structure (very simple power chord riffing) and overall feel due to the clean vocal harmonies. It has the potential to grow on you but I think "Eyes..." is just hard to top right now with how damn catchy it is. That being said, it's a classic example of Kittie adding variety to what I expect to be a killer fucking record. It's what "In Winter" is to "Mouthful of Poison", or "Into the Darkness" to "Burning Bridges", or "Sorrow I Know" to "My Plague"... Real Kittie fans like you will love it for that reason!
