Small details I noticed: Cupcake cat is animated with very few in-between frames (fitting) , and is very snappy, whereas toppina is much smoother, and eases into her movements more. The only exception is the Tweened parts for cupcake cat, and the part where toppina sings “time’s slipping through your paws, like trying to hold sawdust”. Toppinas lyrics in general seems to imply she also had this mindset in the past, but has learned and moved on, especially with the part with the black-and-white eyes. I also think this shows in her personality, bc she seems a lot more happy than cupcake. I think the lyric “where do you think your going?” Lyric means “where do you think you’ll go in life with this mindset?” I also noticed that in the beginning, black backgrounds are associated with success and happiness, and white with failure, as shown with the hearts in the “it’s always one ore the other, switching forever, it seems” part. I think this also goes into the “character development toppina” theory, as I’m calling it, because she’s usually on grey backgrounds. Honestly I could dissect this animation all day, and I really like that! Great job KD!! 💛

Also it seems the whole “black” for success and “white” for failure is also the theme of good and evil, (reminds me of good and evil tally hall album )but like it’s like either working towards personal success in selfish and unethical ways and not caring about others or letting everyone step all over you in order to be nice and ethical but in return you feel like an inadequate failure because of constantly making sure you aren’t hurting anyone

I was wondering why black was associated with success in the animation, but evil irl, and white with failure, but also good. its like conflicting interests. On one hand, you want to be successful and happy, but you also want others too be happy as well. That may explain the “switching forever, it seems” lyric, trying to get the best of both worlds.

Okay, so after watching the video on repeat like, 30 times cause it got stuck in my head, I think I might have figured out the possible story/lore given in this video. PURELY THEORETICAL PAST THIS POINT: So Cupcake and Toppina are counterparts from different timelines. I think this essentially means that they are the same person, or are at least connected to each other in some way or form. We see in the lyrics our first hint to the lore of Cupcake. "don't you wanna be seen as the king shine brighter than the sun either that or be seen as nothing doormat to everyone don't you wanna see yourself succeed watch your enemies bleed either that or give up on your dreams think there's no inbetween" This makes me believe that cupcake is a perfectionist. She want to be the best, do everything absolutely perfect, or else she's worth nothing more than the dirt people walk on. This is very apparent in the lyrics above, with the key word being "either". She has to be the absolute best, doing everything perfectly, or else she is nothing. a "doormat to everyone". The next part comes in when Toppina is singing. "you tried doing impossible things for everybody else but what happened to yourself?" This leads me to believe that Cupcake is also a people-pleaser to the people she knows. The line "you tried doing impossible things for everybody else" really gives the vibe that cupcake is doing everything she can to make the people she cares about happy, regardless of the cost to herself. This can also play into the perfectionist thing, as if she can't make them happy, then she again has no worth. I also believe that in doing this, she has lost sight of who she truly is. What she enjoys and likes, as she has become what everyone else wants her to be, without considering what she wants to be. I also believe that Toppina is a sort of voice of reason to cupcake, a sort of realist, trying to help her with what she is clearly struggling with. I say clearly struggling with because of the line "AAHHHH I CANT DO THIS ANYMORE" from cupcake, implying that she knows she's reaching her limit, but she can't stop, she has to be perfect. There is no in between. Toppina seems to be the complete opposite of Cupcake, as seen in the backgrounds when they are on screen. While cupcake is struggling with being perfect and the pressure that she has when dealing with that and trying to make everyone happy, Toppina seems to be very realistic, knowing that she can't please everyone, that nothing will ever be perfect, and she can only do what she is capable of, and helping out where she can. This is seen both in Toppina's lines, which seem to be directed at cupcake, trying to help cupcake realize that nothing will ever be perfect, and that's okay, it doesn't have to be. Toppina's background is also grey, compared to the black and white static behind Cupcake. This implies that Toppina is that in-between, helping people how she can, knowing that nothing is perfect, and that everything has it's flaws. cupcake seems to be blinded by her perfectionism, leading her to only see black and white, perfection or complete failure, while Toppina can see it all, as she has the realization that nothing is perfect, and tries to help cupcake realize this to help her Anyway, that's what I was able to infer from the animation, but it's all theoretical! okay so building on this, and rewatching the video because it’s living in my head rent free (thx kittydog), it seems that Asterisk kind of dragged cupcake around to do things with them. This could have led to cupcakes people pleasing as asterisk might have been getting mad at her if she didn’t do what asterisk wanted? kinda resolidifying that to make people happy you have to do what they want, regardless of what you want? could also have played into the perfectionism aspect, by possibly having a sense of not being good enough? the line “do you try to flip the world instead of the hourglass” kinda resonates with this idea, at least for me. almost as if cupcake has spent her childhood trying to do as the song says, “impossible things”, to please asterisk, reinforcing that perfectionism aspect. idk if that makes sense or if that’s the right path, but it was what I could piece together with the new information you provided me Kittydog!

okay my brain is still running so i’ve got more! cupcake seems to have a masking aspect similar to how someone with smiling depression or even ADHD would. I get this vibe from the ending part, and a tiny bit during the chorus (“It’s always one or the other switching forever it seems”), where even though she seems upset about it, she’s smiling, as if trying to hide it. couple that with the sometimes common ADHD thing of changing how you act to make people happy, and just smiling through it all, cupcake seems to give the same vibe as someone with adhd and other mental health issues, most likely due to her childhood and asterisk. anyway i should probably sleep but my brain probably won’t let me. don’t be surprised if I come back in a bit with even more stuff (my brain is vibrating and making the gmod prop clipping noise)
