The American Century is a 1000 foot long ship that entered the Duluth harbor at about 11:30 AM CST 5/21/2016 to pick up a load of coal. My latest ship video: • The Mesabi Miner Going...

To be there and see something that big transiting such a small space, it is amazing. To have actually done it, even more so.

The blast of the ships horn and the blast of the bridge horn greeting each other gives me goosebumps every time!

Have been going to Duluth for most of my 57 yrs. and this will never get old. When you live next to something so amazing and what it represents you lose its meaning, purpose and history. God willing they return home. Spuds

The fact that i was inside this ship from miles away as voyaged and sleeping when it was crossing this though I was awakened by the voices of the people and hailing scream , Then i rushed on the window and looking down where the people had signaled me and also gave them signals back for saying Bye Bye... ✌️✌️👍💓😑

Now that is a big beast of a ship! Imagine that creeping in at night time with barely a sound out of it. A ghost ship!

While filming the old ore carriers in Duluth on my honeymoon, in late '69, had been taking 35mm color slides, and Super-8mm (silent) color film, and although I only have slides and movies of the ore carrier Anderson, never could have imagined anything like the Anderson, or the Fitzgerald, ever getting lost out there on the Great Lakes. How wrong I was. Years later, after the Fitz went down, and when filming the Paul Tregurtha coming into Duluth in the late 90s, was then using Hi-8 video. What a sight, but weather calm, so no spectacle, except as to how huge this ship really was entering the canal. It was only later I discovered this had been the largest ship on the Great Lakes at the time, and designed to handle ice during winter months, too. However, it apparently had gotten stuck in the ice on its maiden voyage, according a documentary I'd seen, and while leaving its homeport. Just not sure where that was, but somewhere on the Lakes. And it took a Coast Guard icebreaker to get it loose. After repairs to its massive blunt and dented bow, it then continued plying the Great Lakes, and for years afterwards, apparently without further incident.
