For anyone curious about the science: -He combined cucumbers with salt in a sterilized jar to make pickles, which makes vinegar. -He added some of the vinegar to milk to make yogurt, which contains lactic acid bacteria. -He blended rice and corn, which are mostly made of starches, with amylase enzyme from his saliva and lactic acid bacteria from the yogurt. -The amylase enzyme reacts with starches to produce sugars. -The lactic acid bacteria ferments the sugars to produce lactic acid. -The Brix % on the refractometer indicates the concentration of sugar in the solution. -The iodine tests for the presence of starches, purple indicates a positive test. -Because the test was positive, it was evidence that the amylase enzyme had not converted all of the starches to sugar. -He adjusts the pH with vinegar and sonicates the mixture to further break down the starch particles so the amylase can convert the rest of the starches to sugars. -A lower Brix % on the refractometer indicates that the lactic acid bacteria has fermented most of the sugar into lactic acid. -He filtered the sugar solution to remove the unreacted solids and then centrifuged out the remaining solids. -He rinsed the dust from some activated carbon added it to the solution to absorb the dissolved lactic acid. -He filtered out the activated carbon and soaked it in acetone, which dissolved the lactic acid. -He filtered out the activated carbon and evaporated the acetone away to leave behind the lactic acid. -He heated the lactic acid to cause it to polymerize in to poly lactic acid (PLA), which is a type of plastic.

I love the approach where everything is shown not told, rather than just saying he could get polylactic acid from cucumbers and then going on to make a video about making a pla knife he shows everything he could render from a cucumber fermentation sequence and lactobacter fermentation action before landing on how hard crystalized lactic acid and PLA are.
