There’s probably something to this because I gave my mother a kiwi fruit pretty much everyday. She had become bed fast due to Alzheimer’s disease and had forgotten how walk and feed herself. Being bed fast for over 5 years can wreak havoc on a person’s digestive system but these helped keep things moving along if you will. When 3 o’clock rolled around she would get so excited about our kiwi time. Those are some great memories from an extremely difficult time.

I swore to all my friends and family kiwi was an “allergy reliever.” Later, in nursing school I did a report on the health benefits of kiwi and discovered during my research it was actually beneficial in relieving allergy symptoms!! 😆 I knew it!! Kiwis are my favorite fruit and I eat them with the peels, like an apple I just bite in. I just cut the tough ends off. My friends and family think I'm crazy for doing it, but the peels tastes amazing, I love the added acidity and slight snap it gives and of course all that extra fiber is great. The fuzzy texture doesn't bother me, it is barely noticeable! I def recommend it for reducing food waste, getting more nutritients and just pure taste/texture.

The allergy you mentioned is known as "Oral Allergy Syndrome" and is both extremely mild (itchy mouth and throat) and triggered by MANY different fruits and nuts, even bananas! Fruits that trigger the reaction often vary wildly from person to person, with some people even being allergic to only a specific fruit among a family of closely related fruits. I personally have reactions from both bananas and kiwis, but it's so mild that I don't let it stop me from eating them.

After a very quick Google search, it appears that kiwis are less likely than other foods to contain heavy pesticides due to their contained farming regions. They are not massively produced in comparison to apples/oranges, etc. so they do not need to be protected from certain insects in the same way that popular fruits/veg do. Eating the skin appears to be relatively safe, but you should do more research if it's that important to you.
@michaelzhang18917 жыл бұрын
If you're scared, wash it and eat it with skin to get the extra nutrition and fibre. That should up your fibre intake greatly and much closer to 30+ grams/day that's recommended. Edit: to put this into perspective, I've been seeing around that if you eat it with the skin, you triple fibre intake. If the fruit itself has ~2 grams, and you eat 2 fruits/day, that's an easy 12 grams of fibre.

Great video Jeff - definitely going to grab some kiwis on my next trip to the grocer! I was wondering if you have ever considered making a Science Explained video on resting/recovery/making the most of rest days? On a similar note, I think it would interesting if you were to scientifically address what to do (e.g. changes to nutrition) when one is unable to train for a period of time (due to injury, inaccessibility, travel etc.). Please consider it! I'm a huge fan of your channel, keep up the great content!

So coincidental this video was recommended. I actually started eating kiwi with camomile tea before bed because I have sleep problems. I’m shook that kiwis originated from China though. 🤯 Glad you posted this!

The sleep quality study has no control group and only 24 participants, which is pretty weak. I think you should mention that. That said, I might still try it for there is little harm to be expected. EDIT: After a closer look, I have to say: The p-values are rather impressive. On the other hand, the study got support from Taiwanese Kiwi Giant ZESPRI.

It's tough to find large studies focused on foods or other non-patentable substances (herbs etc.) there's just no way to recoup the costs. So I appreciate even small studies.

I feel like it’s safe to take studies with under 75 subjects with a grain of salt. Don’t dismiss, but don’t blindly accept. So I’d say you’re right in calling it weak.
