Disclaimer: This is just my personal point of view, as I think that there are no reasons to justify toxicity. I'm not saying they don't love each other, I just think their love is a little suffocating. And there are tons of other BLs that are equally toxic. I'm just adressing this one. Please write your honest opinion in the comments, I want to hear your thoughts.

It becomes less suffocating in volume 2 of the novel, Kiyoi becomes very supportive of Hira.

I mean on one hand Kiyoi did verbally abuse him but the real bullying in my opinion came from the rest of the group (and so called friends of Kiyoi) even though still Kiyoi could be considered an accomplice since he didn't really intervene or if he did it was in a very harsh/insincere way. But they even bullied Kiyoi after he fell from his "throne" which also makes me think that Kiyoi deep down didn't even count on them but just wanted to be accepted and liked ("celeb syndrome ") ... Also Hira's behavior could be classified as "stalking" and obsessive/idolizing behavior towards Kiyoi...I mean u can even realize that Hira knew what the group things of him and even retaliates in his head but eventually keeps it in cause this is the only way for him to be near Kiyoi In short both had their issues... I am just glad that after high school they both broke free and came to terms with each other (to an extent at least). So the relationship they started on ep 6 doesn't seem toxic to me... But they sure have a toxic past together that may or may not resurface later on in their relationship... This will depend on them and how they deal with their feelings from now on.

The original Hira is a very suspicious person. He is a big man taller than Kiyoi. Stalking Kiyoi and take every picture. The author wanted to write an eerie Seme (top) that he was obsessed with. Therefore, it seems that Uke (bottom) is not a gentle and quiet character, but a strong character that can repel it. Kiyoi's character is a typical tsundere. If you like sweet and gentle BL, this story is not for you.

Kiyoi & Hira are 2 introverted teenagers that can't cope with their very intense attraction to each other, they can't express their mutual attraction without exhibiting what appears classic 'Toxic' behaviour... 'bullying', 'stalking'... but its not... Kiyoi doesnt really bully Hira & Hira doesnt really stalk Kiyoi... they both literally have ZERO friends and family to talk about their feelings with & what happens to bottled feelings... it gets expressed badly... I personally do not label their relationship as toxic but more 'repressed misexpression' ... toxic behaviour is malicious & there is zero maliciousness in their feelings to each other as the are just 2 lost souls that are finding each other in their own way over time...

I agree! I’ve watched so many BL series before and Those couples were even more toxic. For example… a guy suddenly rapes or forces they guy he likes to sleep with him. These were grown ass men not high school students. So I feel like this couple are nowhere near toxic to that level. They both seem like lost souls who are finding home/themselves in each other

**spoilers ahead** Yes I agree as well in my opinion I don’t think it’s toxic I feel like the show is actually trying to say that they like need each other because in a way they are both flawed and have bad traits and the only ones who can help that are each other because of their strong love for each other. They also met each other as teens which we all know as teens we are no where near perfect so imagine adding on to such complex personalities like them falling in love with each other? Not to mention the misunderstanding they had with each other. I agree with yours and some of the comments who explain it better. Toxic to me is harming and putting someone in danger and I don’t think they harm each other but make each other happy/heal with each other to be better people together. Actually in the second and third novel from what I have seen from spoilers that once they are in a relationship they grow and figure out stuff/their flaws together and become better. Is it complex and bumpy at first? Yes but is it toxic? To me no I wouldn’t categorize this as the word toxic just two broken lonely flawed people in their own ways who don’t know how to express their feelings make mistakes and try deal with it thus that leads to the whole story in the drama with them figuring it out up until the final episode. I’m not excusing any of the things in the drama from the characters I just don’t find their relationship itself toxic rather it makes them be better together. I truly feel they love each other a lot which helps them fix their inner turmoil and become better after getting together. For example if Hira were to end up with Koyoma, Hira would have never probably really gotten over Kiyoi and still had the god like mentality towards him which is not healthy and also not fair to Koyoma. Hira probably would continue being insecure and down about himself as well. While on the other hand Kiyoi would have still built a wall up for himself and never be able to fully express his emotions and who knows how he would of handled it as it would eventually blow up to something probably really bad. This is also why I feel like people should not judge a show so quickly when it isn’t even complete/drama/story isn’t done showing what it has to show. That’s just my take on it though.

After buying VIP and watching all the eps, I wholeheartedly agree with you. They aren't toxic, they're fumbling teenagers trying to make sense of the feelings they have for one another. In the end, they grew older and learned to properly express how much they want to stay together.

I think the same way, I don't think it's toxic, I remember the first time I watched it hurt to hear it, I even reviewed the ep because I thought I read it wrong and maybe it was because of the translation but no, for me they are misunderstood and Kyoi as you said he was never bad, on the contrary, he wanted Hira to always have it by his side, that's why he always called, he wanted Hira to reciprocate, in the series it's very clear, he says, I kissed you and what you did: nothing because Hira paralyzed and then it ends up disappearing because his cell phone falls into the water

I almost did not watch the series because I've seen the word "toxic " thrown all over in association with their relationship. However, I gave it a try and I'm glad I did. Yes, their relationship is troublesome, but to me it was mostly miscommunication galore .

I love this edit cos Iit captured their loneliness. I think people nowadays conflate “toxic” with any interaction that is not as sweet as Cherry Magic or Kieta Hatsukoi (which are also great series). I get that in early Japanese yaoi and popular BLs, romanticized dubious enthusiasm was a popular trope, but I hope the rejection of that trope doesn’t stop viewers from appreciating more complex storylines. Utsukushii Kare has two very lonely leads who found some solace playing this little master-servant game. But Kiyoi never used it to actually hurt Hira. Kiyoi never asked him to jump in front of a bus or hurt anybody on his behalf. He was actually quite surprised when Hira beat up their classmate for pouring tomato juice on him. And he never blackmailed Hira even when he accosted Hira for following him to the dance studio. He just dragged Hira along cos he enjoyed the attention until he realized Hira didn’t see him as person but a god. I want people to give this series a chance because it’s beautifully done. It isn’t one of those lazily written BLs who use problematic tropes just to spice up the story but never addressed the issues. Utsukushii Kare explored how their loneliness and misunderstandings hurt each other. The story never revered their weird little game and actually presented it as problem they needed to overcome.

I just finished watching the series and I loved how both characters are flawed but in the end learned how to properly expressed their feelings and understand one another better. I love fluffy and perfect bl dramas but bl dramas with character arcs just pulls at my heartstrings a lil more.

I'm Japanese, but I watched this drama and read the original novel of this drama. 1. Yes, it is. Hira describes her encounter with Kiyoi in this way. From the original story, "When did I first learn that there are two kinds of people in the world: those who trample and those who are trampled? I was clearly a trampled person, and the world around me wasn't bright, beautiful, or kind. But, It was in the spring of seventeenth year that my gray world was turned upside down. Kiyoi was beautiful, he was a beautiful light that cut through the dull my gray world. The world illuminated by Kiyoi is painfully beautiful." 2. There are some parts that you misunderstand because of the mistake in the English translation. Kiyoi says "Kimoi", but it is not accurate to translate this as "disgusting". It corresponds to "Kimoi", but the word is not in English. It is a shortened version of Kimochi (feeling) Warui (bad), but its meaning has changed and is now used in a broader sense. "Kimoi" is a word that everyone often uses, for example, "sense of clothes, a little Kimoi" There is also the word "Kimokawa" derived from Kimoi, which means "Kimoi + cute". The nuance is different from "disgusting". Kiyoi has never abused Hira. Hira has been seen with strange eyes since childhood because of her stuttering, and he has been the subject of bullying all the time. However, Kiyoi called out to Hira, and Hira belonged to Kiyoi's group, so he was spared from being bullied by other children. There is also a scene where Kiyoi protects Hira from his other children. And when Hira went shopping alone in the summer, she picked him up by bike. Kiyoi doesn't call him a terrible nickname, even if all the other kids call him a terrible nickname, "Hi-kun." 3, They have never harmed others. Even in the story after this drama, they didn't harmed others about anyone. 4, The reason why Kiyoi to push Hira after kissing is explained from the Kiyoi viewpoint of episode 5. Kiyoi was just embarrassed. Also, when Kiyoi left, it was translated into English as saying "Good bye", but the English translation is incorrect. Kiyoi says "Ja mata". Translated literally, it is "again." In other words, when translated into English, it is equivalent to "See you". Also, in the scene where Kiyoi kicked Hira, before Kiyoi kicked, Hira asked, "Why does Kiyoi care about that?" (It's cut in your video, but it's a serious line.) This means that I said, "No matter who you go out with, you don't have the right to talk to you, right?" Kiyoi dedicated his first kiss to Hira. And then he said "see you". However, if the other party can change the phone number and say, "No matter who you go out with, it doesn't matter to you," everyone gets angry. This is a terrible insult. It's no wonder Kiyoi kicked Hira. But the fact was, Hira thought that Kiyoi didn't like him, so them just passed each other. As you say, Hira is obsessed with Kiyoi. That's because everything, including Kiyoi's strength, is Hira's longing. Kiyoi is hungry for love because of his childhood loneliness. That's why Kiyoi was attracted to Hira, who is obsessed with himself. From him, we can make up for what we don't have. I thnk there is more than one form of love.

Thank you for clarifying some scenes in the drama. I agree with this explanation of yours. The translation of sub isn't that accurately done. Also, both of the characters have issues in their childhood resulting in the outcome as the way they grow up that people who has watched the drama may misinterpret their actions. Especially Kiyoi, he's not a bad person nor a toxic one. He's just a plain tsundere who has a hard time expressing his feelings towards other people. Ps. I'm hoping for a second season or a special episode or maybe a movie because I like their story and their chemistry. I want to see how their story went after the last episode❤

The novel depicts their past more deeply than the drama, and there are many scenes that were cut in the drama. I highly recommend it. But, unfortunately, it is not available in English. I think it's only in Japanese and Chinese. 😞 I want to watch season 2 too! They're still the same in some ways,but, they themselves and their love are growing.😊

I don't think they are toxic, just young and both with different coping mechanisms for their low self-esteem. I really loved how they ended the series and showed Kiyou's perspective. I wish more shows would have flawed characters that grow and communicate. Toxic for me, means malicious and intentional, and I don't think they fit the category. Many of us were messed up teens, I think we'd hesitate to call ourselves toxic, just inexperienced and learning the way all teens do. I love the edit though. 😊

I love the edit, I do agree that they have a dysfunctional relationship for the first 3 eps but afterwards, as I learned more about the characters and as they develop, they are still flawed characters but they try to be better for each other. To me, thats not toxic, thats just realistic. Some people don't just know how to healthily understand and express their feelings from the get-go, there will be mistakes made and misunderstandings but we're all learning.

Analyzing the series after having read the manga, I can understand why Kyoi acts this way, an only child, that the mother married and had two more children, was rejected for being older and left out, handsome, he generates to himself a fiction that people should serve him because he finds himself more than anything in the world, and when he met Hira for the first time and their eyes met he knew he wasn't going to be alone anymore, only Hira didn't respond at first because for him Kyoi was an untouchable being that had to be adored, that's why the relationship at the end of the series is intense and also p Kyioi wanted Hira to change and we only saw this change at the end of the series. I'm not justifying abusive relationship that's not it, I'm just giving my opinion taking into account the series. Now going to real life, coming out of fiction who has never had a similar or even worse relationship? We are human, we make mistakes, but the good thing we can learn from our mistakes, and for the person we love and for ourselves we change.

For me, their relationship is not a toxic one but they were just having a hard time expressing their feelings. I think Kiyoi being a tsundere type is just a defense mechanism because he was longing for the love and attention he wanted but doesn't want to be in pain that's why he doesn't know what love is and having a hard time expressing his romantic feelings towards hira. While Hira has a hard to socializing because he thinks his life was dull and he sees himself being under the people plus the stuttering he got since his childhood makes him a hard to make friends because people thinks he's weird. Bottom line is: They were just 2 people expressing their feelings in their own way. Hira found that Kiyoi's beautiful that can make his life beautiful and not dull and Kiyoi found the love and attention he deserve the way Hira stare/admire and the way he treats him.

I don’t think their relationship is toxic per se, but there is definitely work to be done to make it healthy. I really enjoy the complexity and how they seem to be compatible but there is some really bad impulse control. Hira does thinks that may come off as creepy and I REALLY dislike Kiyoi’s violent outbursts. Kicking Hira is not okay and he’s not in high school anymore so that “being young and not knowing better” isn’t an excuse anymore.

For lovers of reading there are novels that are much heavier than this series, for example the TharnType novel, Type he rapes a guy and at the time I don't remember anyone talking about it, another novel that is quite heavy Addicted Heroin, wow what Gu Hai does with our Baloin has to be strong to read, and lastly, The Effect, my God, this one I had to stop for breath to read and even so I needed some time, because this novel messes a lot with your psychology. My Beautiful wasn't rape at all, which I was surprised because knowing Japan, they have a rape culture that I always see on the shows.
