Kanakangi is the 1st Melakarta ragam in the 72 melakarta ragam system of Carnatic music wherein it is the 1st ragam under the 1st Chakra - Indu. It is called Kanakambari in the Muthuswami Dikshitar school . Exceptionally it has all sudha sworas..in both Arohanam as well as Avarohanam...... S R₁ G₁ M₁ P D₁ N₁ Ṡ / Ṡ N₁ D₁ P M₁ G₁ R₁ S . It is the Shuddha Madhyamam equivalent of Salagam, which is the 37th Melakarta. Kanakangi has janya ragams associated with it, of which 'Karnataka Shuddha Saaveri and Lavangi (a recent addition to Carnatic music by Dr. BMK- "Omkara akarini madahankara varini avatumam") are popular. Pls. note that Dr.BMK's kriti- 'shrisha putraya namostute vighna vinashaya vibhava pradaya' is in 'Kanakangi Ragam' itself...set in 'Rupaka Thalam'. For info.The popular song- 'Moham ennum..' in the Tamil Film-Sindhu Bhairavi, and sung by Dasettan-K. J. Yesudas is composed under 'Kanakangi Ragam' by Ilayaraja. It is to be noted that in' kanakambari' which is also labelled as the 1st Melakarta as per the original list compiled by Venkatamakhin. the notes used in the scale are the same, but the ascending scale is different. It is an audava-sampurna raga (5 notes in Arohanam , while full 7 are used in Avarohanam).......does not have G1 and N1 in Arohanam!!!Dikshitar kriti (only one) specifically stated as 'Kanakambari ragam' falls under this scale. For example... "Kanakambari karunyamrita lahari....kamakshi mamava kameswari "in Rupaka Thalam on deity- Tanjavur kamakshi. Here Dasettan presented the Thyagaraja Keerthanam-'Sri Gananaatham' with a brief but profound Ragaalapana and a lovely Kalpanaswarm....Soulful rendition!
