Why does there need to be a debate over versions? First & foremost, it's just an incredible amazingly perfect powerful SONG. When you have a timeless song like this, all any singer needs to do is just show up & not mess up. And a great song can be done in various genres & still be great....Love Howie's version, love the Eagles version, love Brownstone's version....

Precisely. The Eagles sang the original version via the soulful voice of Timothy Schmit, and sported amazingly talented guitarists who contributed to the famous solo. You can't fairly compare the combined, exceptional contributions of a top band to a solo artist covering one of their hits. What Hewett can be judged for is his vocal performance, which is indeed excellently sang and thus makes for a good cover in its own right.

I saw him at a place called Peppers in LosAngeles . This was when he was still married , and this was when I’m for real came out . I brought a date with me , and I knew she would love it ! He started singing a song . I still don’t remember what it was , but a woman in the front row told him she was married , and her husband couldn’t come because he had to work . Ok ! Now I remember ! The song was I still say yes . He dedicated the the song to her , and her husband , and when he was done with the song ?! She hugged him , and when she was letting go of his hands , he had her number in a piece of paper . He looked at it , and embarrassed her in front of errrbody ! He said something like . That song was for you and him ! Not you and me . Then he went to the next song . Very classy of him .

H Man I love you my brother. My best friend and ex wife Ally passed away in 2016 , I will never get over it. I was doing a concert with Shalamar about 7/8 weeks later . Ally loved this song and H had never sung this live in a Shalamar gig or in years and years. He sang it in one of the shows dedicating the song to Ally even singing her name 4 times. I was in tears. He sang it unbelievable. H is like my brother. Shalamar are here now touring and H man I will never forget what you did . Love ❤ you brother 🎶🎼🎤
