OMG!!! I just found this video by accident and am BLOWN AWAY! I love this group! Being a HUGE Beatle guy myself, I never fell for the rumor back in the day, that they were secretly the Beatles BUT… I loved the fact that they had the Beatles melodic sensibilities coupled with those brilliant George Martin type arrangements. And to hear John Woloschuk perform my FAVORITE Klaatu song “A Routine Day” solo on the piano is a dream come true! I’ve always LOVED that song. I’m also an astronomy nut and always related to the guy with his head buried in a book on Mars. That’s me at every mundane job I’ve ever had! And the cherry on top was to hear Woloschuk say that he was inspired by Gilbert O’Sullivan who is my other HUGE musical influence. Then he mentioned loving “Alone Again (Naturally)” and made my heart sing as I’ve always considered that song as one of the most beautiful melodies of all time. John Woloschuk is brilliant and cut from the same cloth melodically as McCartney and O’Sullivan, as am I. Man what I’d give to sit and have a beer with those guys. To hear John Woloschuk speak (BTW, it’s the first I’ve ever heard him speak!) and then the few words to come out of his mouth were to give a shout out to GOS.. well… needless to say, that had me grinning from ear to ear. Of course it was really no surprise and I could always tell from his chord changes and beautiful melodies that JW is obviously very much a student of the McCartney school of melody but it was all the same, GREAT to hear him give props to the brilliance of O’Sullivan also a composer heavily influenced by McCartney. “A Routine Day” gives me goosebumps still to this day. I mean right from that powerful opening F6 piano chord that, just like the Beatles’ “Hello Goodbye”, prepares your ears for the exciting musically delicious entree that’s coming… Woloschuk hit it out of the ball park with this one. Even has that perfect Lennon/McCartney harmony thing. Sooo melodically powerful and musically interesting. Pure brilliance. I could go on and on with songs like “Sub-Rosa Subway” or “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft” but anyway… All three of these Klaatu guys are musical geniuses and we the people of Earth are all the better for it. Thanks guys! :)

Klaatu is so exquisitely all over the place! They're retro. They're progressive. They're grunge. They're classical. Sir Army Suit is THE most under-appreciated collection of all time. Terry said in the opening remarks that it's "artwork", and that it is. The only other collection of works that blows me away to the same extent is the Moody Blues "Days of Future Past" (also greatly under-appreciated). "Tokeymor Field" is absolutely in the top 5 of my all time favorite songs. The arrangement, especially the vocals, and the quality of the engineering/mixing (not to mention the musicianship) is outstanding, especially considering when it was recorded. And like "Cherie", "Magentalane" and "Dear Christine" it's a hopeful, musing celebration of the things that make life exciting and fulfilling. It reminds us of that proverbial silver lining, "And with one great big beautiful smile / You bring out the sun for a while". I play that whenever I find myself needing a lift...

@@RedVynil Pretty sure that's Terry Draper. Don't think John has released anything since the 80's. In a 1997 interview he said he essentially quit music completely.

"3:47 EST" blew me off my feet when I first heard it, and I was an instant Klaatu fan. "Hope" was even better, and I still listen to them today, on the first release vinyl. You guys were so far ahead of your time, it's no wonder most people didn't "get it". Who cares about top 40.

Thank you for posting this video! I instantly fell in love with Klaatu when I took a chance and bought the poorly engineered double disc of their first two albums! It is so cool putting human faces to the band members. And it is totally surprising. John seems to be such an introvert, Terry would be right at home walking into a bar or club and talking the owner into hiring them on the spot, and Dee has a science fiction writer vibe about him! Maybe I too will move to Mars!

I watched the debut of the animated video of Routine Day on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert in '78. Klaatu's Sir Army Suit was cool but their Hope album is one of the greatest and most under rated of all time in both the rock and classical genres.

Love this! I’ve been a fan since the first album. Little Neutrino is probably my favourite, followed by Around The Universe in 80 Days, Silly Boys…but I’ve never seen the band members or heard any of these stories. Wish I could find a copy of Magentalane on CD to complete my collection.

It's interesting that Routine Day was inspired by Gilbert O'Sullivan, I've always liked his work. But it would also fit perfectly on Days Of Future Passed by The Moody Blues. It also hints at the middle part of A Day In The Life _The Beatles Sgt Pepper, where the singer is telling about his usual morning routine. And maybe even Good Morning from the same album.

A cvollegue gave me a cassette with the Hope and EST albums in late 70's. That tape was later discarded or lost or given away, but still, Klaatu was still in my head. But wasn't until I had become a grumpu old f@rt I bought the first 4 album and still have Magentalane on my "must have list". Just ordered three Terry Draper albums. Two notices: When I was you I had a crush on a girl named Christine ... very appropriate. Back in the late 70's or early 80's was a cool radio program (here in Sweden), cannot recall the name, but as intro, the programs used the last minute of We're Off You Know.

Great video. I loved this album and all of their albums. I had an artist re-create the album cover. It was done as a high school graduation gift for myself in 1979. And what about the writing of certain parts "Silly Boys",,,lol. I think I know how that was done.

Don Kirshner’s Midnight Express is about him ending up in a Turkish prison for smuggling Klaatu out of the country.

Its pretty awesome how the Beatles paid these guys to cover up the Klaatu mystery. There js just no way in hell anyone could come that close to the Beatles production, just no way. The albums are littered with British accents and London Orchestra. So many interesting clues, not to mention Paul and John's connections with Toronto Ontario, very good boys, alot are fooled but not me lol

In the song: Calling occupants of interplanetary craft, Klaatu sounded very British to my ears back in the day. It must've been intentional or maybe it wasn't. I thought maybe the group were UK expates or something. Then I would hear Klaatu singing other songs, then they sounded Canadian/American. A very versatile band.

I believe the interviews were done for the DVD with the 2013 remaster of Sir Army Suit and the animations being made around 1978-1979 for the half-hour animated special "Happy New Year, Planet Earth". However, due to complications, the only animation that was finished and released was A Routine Day. The DVD is the first time the previously unreleased animations were available to purchase.

To add to this, Happy New Year, Planet Earth was actually showed at Klaatu-Kon 2005, but I don't think any of its contents (save for A Routine Day) have ever been officially shown anywhere aside from the DVD.
