Spontaneity and understatement characterized the brief creative period of KLAR! 80, which lasted from April 1980 until October 1982. The idea for the label was born whilst driving along the autobahn. The next registration plate of a car that came into view would provide a name for the concept and the accompanying shop as an actionist platform - an emboldening exclamation mark replaced the dash. KLAR!80. There was a certain discount supermarket chic to the cassettes released on the imprint, a combination of bold yellow and black inlays with handwritten-style typography.
Today, the Aachener Strasse shop in the Bilk district of Düsseldorf survives in a few Polaroid pictures and video recordings made by Yuzuru Agi and Mamoru Shibuya when they visited from Osaka. Yuzuru Agi started 'Rock Magazine' in the mid-seventies, the first Japanese publication to deal with underground culture. It was June 1981 when he undertook an extensive voyage to Düsseldorf, London and Paris, keen to track down new trends in music at first hand.
It is with great pleasure that we are able to present this rare video document by Agi Yuzuru and Mamoru Shibuya, filmed on June 11th, 1981. Courtesy of Satoru Higashiseto. In an interview with the aforementioned Rainer Rabowski and the musician Xaõ Seffcheque sadly passed away a few weeks ago.
