Jordan from Hardcore Music Studio shot out a bunch of different hardware units and was also very surprised by the results. Long story short, if you are looking for a 1176 hardware unit on a budget, it will absolutely do the trick.

I used a UA 1176 for years. I have a KT in my rack, along with 2 WA76s with a Bluie on the way. The cheaper models are amazing. I can't think of a reason I'd spend over $2500 for 1 channel of 1176, when I can get the same thing for a few hundred bucks.

No noise for me. I had the Lin76 before, that compressor was too distorted and cut the high end down, added way too much low mids. I returned the Lin76 by Lindell, left too much of an imprint on the sound that was impossible to work arround. I got the KT-76, it is clean. It sounds good with 3 to 4 db of compression, sound good a 5 to 10 even on vocals. It adds no colour, noise or distortion. It maintains the balance in the frequency spectrum you run into it. Sure, it may emphasize something that sounds bad in a recording, any compressor will. If anyone had an issue with the soun of these they either had a faulty unit and or ears. Many claim a UAD plugin will get you the same results for less money, that is a lie. I used UAD on tracking for year, for plugins they sound fantastic but they don't compare. he KT 76 has a fuller sound, lows, mids and highs. It bring a recording forward and to life and doesn't thin out the audio like a plugin will. It can be pushed into more compression without artifacts. Also 2 to 5 db of compression on a kt 76 will tame the peaks and put it forward better than equivalent amount or more with a boost on plugins. They sound grainy and less present by comparison. This is a fantastic compressor. I wanted something to level my signal going into my daw while maintaining the integrity of my source, this does it like a charm.

Totally agree with everything you have said. I've actually compared it over the last few weeks to the UAD version and to me, its in another class. Way better than any plug in versions I've got. For the money it's a fantastic addition and I just can't fault it. I'm definitely looking into more of their stuff. Have you tried their la2a?

When you say an 1776 adds no colour or distortion - Isn't that the whole point? I get its not a blue rev, but 76 compressors have never been about transparency, they have a sound

@@Reggi_Sample Compared to other clones, it is relatively subdued, obviously when you compress quick transients there is a bit of distortion. It doesn't stamp a ton of it to the point it sticks out. There is a slightly heavier tone then in the box comps and more open top end, overall more dimensional, but the top end doesn't get muffled and the lin76 for example. That was what I was after sonically. Transient control and upfront vocals, it does that job.

Nice video I bought one and once you are past 12-1 on output it does get a little noisy. But from what I understand not any more so than an original vintage one. I think it’s nice to compress a smidge on the way in. I use it in the effects send/return on the ISA one. If you can’t get a sound, it ain’t the gear.
