the boy feels that his family is falling apart, he wants to be loved so he shines his father's shoes, kisses his portrait. him falling for the milkmaid might be connected with him wanting to copy his father or understand why is his dad abandoning his family for this girl. or maybe he wants to understand what loving somebody in a romantic way is like.
