I feel like there has always been a connection between them maybe not true love but just the way he looks at her and the way he touches her. When Rebekah told him to choose family or Elena he chose Elena. He did everything he could to save Elena and hated Rebekah for turning her into a vampire. Klaus could have let Elena die from a werewolf bite but didn’t. He pet he hair and was so into Elena drinking his blood even though it was “personal”
