Yes, Smeerensburg is/was a real place. It was a a whaling settlement on Amsterdam Island in northwest Svalbard. Founded by the Danish and Dutch in 1600's as one of Europe's northernmost outposts. Smeerenburg was sadly abandoned around 1660. All that is left of it sadly is some deep frozen lumber and chains now. All the building have crashed down and most decomposed.

Yeah, this quickly became my favourite animated Christmas film. I'm still upset that it didn't win the Oscar.

That's my best animated film winner right there

Watched this movie yesterday from when I’m writing this comment and I just had to search KZbin for more people watching it as I absolutely loved it. A truly wonderful film in both writing, pacing, plot, animation, and voice acting. I loved Alva and Jesper, and I adored how beautiful the last scene was.

5:48 That's the point. They're cut off from the outside world AND each other. They're literally feuding with people they don't even know, all because their ancestors did.

I love this film! So glad to see Sami represented, an indigenous people that hardly anyone outside the Nordic countries and Russia, where they live, seem to know exist. They're speaking their language and wearing their traditional clothing as well which is really cool.

The feuding families are based off of the Hatfields and the McCoys.

That makes sense. The real life Hatfields and McCoys did eventually end their feud, and now many members of the two families have intermarried.
