Hey guys! In this video I go over how the river raft scene happened in Jurassic Park! Michael Crichton's original 1990 novel has a TON of stuff that never made it into the original film and this may just be the greatest part of the entire book! When Lex and Tim begin to make their way past the sleeping Tyrannosaur over to the boat that Alan Grant has just made, they eventually embark on an awesome water chase on Isla Nublar! This is one of my favorite parts in the entire franchise and it's seriously something I'd love to see brought faithfully to the big screen! Hope you all enjoy! :D

Probably because Spielberg knew that making Tim like novel Lex would've been worse than just making him a dino nerd. Well there WAS one moment when he acted stupid - the control room scene where instead of helping Grant and Sattler by giving them a shotgun he decided to....pound the chair his sister was sitting in.

I love Chricton's style of interrupting/breaking the continuity of the flow like how Grant was thinking where to shoot and then the T.Rex interrupts his thoughts with his roar at 04:48. He does this all throughout the novel and in some instances it further intensifies the suspense and horror of the scene, like in the Raptor pen.

In retrospect, the T. rex hunting Grant and the kids on a river definitely has shades of the finale of Jaws, with Bruce tearing The Orca apart. Crichton probably had Spielberg in the back of his mind. I'm glad that a version of it, of sorts, made it into JP3 with the Spinosaurus River Attack, but damn the book had a supremely entertaining and suspenseful first pass at it. I think Spielberg made the right choice for the film, from a budget and production standpoint, as it would have been too ambitious for the time.
@gustaf3811
@gustaf3811 4 жыл бұрын
Spielberg didn't only do it because of the budget, this surely have been done with CGI and would not be too costly. However Spielberg wanted some realism which is why you see a Spino which is an aquatic animal rather then a T-rex because everyone knows they could not swim.

I like the end of the scene where the waterfall stops and the tranqs have finally got to the rex and it bites it's tongue and falls back. My fave part is when they're out in the field and the tally of all animals found comes back and they realise the dinosaurs have been breeding and they could be anywhere. Each time I read this I feel such a sense of impending dread for the characters, as if they weren't already in mortal danger! haha

Ah, the river scene. When reading the book, THIS was the scene I wanted the most to be in the movie. Sure, some other bits from the books I wish made it into their film adaptations, but this moment would be my top pick for the original movie and the Carnotaurus moment for The Lost World. It's a very entertaining moment, and uses that whole 'you can't see under water from the surface' fear. It also would have been cool to see the T-Rex swim like a crocodile as was described in the book. Now, I am aware this ALMOST made it into the film how I can't remember why off the top of my head. However, still glad to see this inspire a level in the Genesis game and even the official Jurassic Park Ride!

I always wanted to see the T. Rex river raft scene in any movie. As a matter of fact, the Dinosaur was sleeping on a rock near the river, as thought it was guarding it. The raft scene is up there, but imo, nothing out does nedry's death. The way it's set up from the very beginning, the slow dawning realization, and then one of the more gruesome kills the book has to offer. It's pretty great all around.

This is one of my favorite sequences from the novel, I can see why it was cut from the movie though. Edit: Thank you for the heart!

Imagine this as the opening sequence to JW3 with some random people going rafting in the wilderness where the Rex is hanging out. But instead of them drifting away as the Rex gets distracted, he comes up right under them and it cuts to the title sequence.

Seriously, the river raft scene was the most scariest moment in Michael Crichton‘s book.

I personally like the stampede scene. The raft scene is quite common in your videos. Also why were Lex and Tim's ages switched? You know the juvenile would have been interesting to see as well.
@KomradeDoge

I think the ages were switched for the movie for the same reason they swapped Hammond to being a loving grandfather who cared about his staff in the movie, it simply fit better for the story they wanted to tell. I think they just wanted one of the kids to be more mature than either was in the book, and decided Lex was the better of the 2 for that to be.

Another outstanding dramatization Mr. Fioriti....both visually and audially. You really are onto something here as everyone seems to agree. I hope you can fully develope the idea into a commercial enterprise as you surely do deserve it and I'm sure there would be a demand for it.

Rexy attacking lex tim and grant from the lagoon is my favorite part in the book . The way it was written was perfect . Like when rexy goes under water like a crocodile that always makes me think of dinocucaus would have a made a great appearance in book . But I still enjoy this chapter with rexy acting like a crocodile. The young rex coming back to eat the fresh food is surprising when rexy chases the juvenile off .

It makes me wonder if T-Rexes could swim or they just walked through the water. Also now that you mention crocodiles, there were prehistoric crocodiles as well. They were said to be mega huge and one of them were featured in the Lost World arcade.

I can see why it was cut. With the difficulties of water in the past, with films like Jaws, imagine how crazy hard it would be to implement a scene like that into JP.

One of my favorite scenes in the novel, by far. A major pity that it didn't end up in the movie, but I understand that there were legit concerns about being able to pull it off technology wise. Oh, and you know what's even more chilling? In the Sunderban mangroves of Bangladesh, man-eating tigers are still very much a thing. Now and again, these tigers have been seen to slip into the water and pursue people in canoes/on wooden rafts as the occupants wildly try to paddle away, like a dog chasing a dirt bike-or like the rex going after the rubber raft. Not a fun place to be.
