Just a small bit of info on the flexing Knipex lineman's pliers: combination pliers have both cutting and gripping surfaces. German toolmakers prioritize the cutters over the grippers, which means they manufacture the pliers to cut first, then grip, which results in the cutters touching before the gripping portions fully closing. 99% of the times you don't need fully closed grippers in the last half millimeter. If it was the other way around, you might not be able to cut very small diameter cables with the cutter only to have a not so notable advantage to fully close it. That's why it flexes, because it's not supposed to fully close, it's supposed to cut well. Side note: I can totally understand your point on the price. The reason I buy German tools is because I live next to them and it's cheaper than you think here. I also have some US-made tools like some SK and Proto wrenches, and there are really good quality tools available in the US, but just like in your case, the price + shipping + tax is not worth it. You have your preferences and there's nothing wrong with it. Knipex in my honest opinion is still better than Klein, but why should you buy the best if you don't need it? There's a reason why my less used socket set is from Proxxon (Taiwan-made) and not a star-prices Stahlwille.
@Freakingstang3 жыл бұрын
All linesman’s are made this way. The grippers don’t touch so you don’t cut the the wire when twisting and pulling. Things like solid soft copper wire this becomes very important so you don’t damage the wire. Klein’s are superior to knipex after a year of use when it comes to linesman’s.

The knipex tools have a way higher level of fit and finish and are technically more sophisticated which makes then seem superficially way way better but the truth is far more murky simply than Knipex > Klein. The reality is that Knipex tools are overall slightly superior to Klein tools in performance and Klein tools can generally stand a slightly higher level of abuse. Klein tools also tend to be a little cheaper than Knipex especially if you are in the U.S. since they are manufactured here. Sometimes depending on the specific application one brands version of a tool may be superior to the other, but more importantly the Klein tool may very well present a much much better value because it can be found at a much more affordable price so you should do your research and not be afraid to mix both brands in one tool bag! I've owned all of the major brands and a lot of the imported brands ie: knipex etc. My favorites in my tool bag are Klein, Channel Lock, Vise Grip ( for locking pliers ), and Crescent or the old original J.H. Williams for adjustable wrenches. I'm not saying that I don't like Knipex etc. I think they are good quality but I don't like them as well. If the pricing was reversed where the Klein etc. were the more expensive I would buy the Klein. It's just one man's opinion and personal preference, each to their own. The extra cost is worth it when you consider the Knipex will last longer than several pairs of Channellocks. My Channellock's teeth rounded off after a few uses and they won't bite for shit now. And even brand new, they don't have near the bite/grip as the Knipex. Sure I could warranty them, but who wants to keep going through that hassle? The work that I usually do (more general handyman, tractor repairs, metal working and so forth) the knipex ploers-wrench and cobras have been amazing. Old school channel locks are definitely useful and slightly easier to set than the knipex but the knipex have worked way better for me.
@hermanpanzerwerferhorkheim98537 жыл бұрын
Um, your electrician bias is showing.... "Cost prohibitive" yet he's an electrician buying duplicates of his tools so he can have two bags, lol. You forgot to factor in the fact that you'll wear out several pairs of Channellocks for every one pair of Knipex, especially the teeth. Not to mention, they just don't work as well, which is worth the extra price by itself to avoid the frustration of having the pliers slip, etc. while on the job. And if you can adjust the Channellocks then you shouldn't have any trouble with the Knipex as it's a much easier design to adjust, which is one of the top comments reviewers say about the Knipex over the Channellock design. Just seems like you were trying to find reasons and you were really reaching. On the linesman pliers. First of all, the Knipex are $50, not $62, which is only slight higher than the Kleins at $42-50 depending on where you buy them. Second, the Klein were doing the same thing you knocked the Knipex for but you hurried through it. If you slow the video down you can clearly see the Klein jaws misaligning with excess pressure. And, I can send you pictures of my Kleins that show jaw misalignment without any use, they came like that. Knipex is better made with more precision, which is evident in the fact that when you buy them they open and close freely and aren't stiff like the Kleins and the cheap Chinese stuff. On the side cutters, you should have bought the regular high-leverage Knipex. Those more directly compare to the Kleins you have, though the Kleins you have are the rebar version, so of course they'll cut well. There are many videos on KZbin comparing similar brands of side cutters and all of them except you say the Knipex cut better. Also, the comparable pairs of Kleins and Knipex are BOTH $30. On screwdrivers. I've destroyed countless Klein screwdrivers from beating on them tightening lock nuts, etc. (your Klein screwdrivers look like you haven't hit them at all) The plastic on the end breaks apart and fractures quite easily. The last new Klein screwdriver I bought snapped in half after falling from a six foot stepladder. Not to mention the tips are shit. The Wera are more comfortable and their tips are tougher and better/more precisely made. And if you want to use them as a chisel and/or hammer on them then buy their screwdrivers with striking caps. Hell they make some with striking caps that also have an insert for a ratchet for high torque turning: www.amazon.com/dp/B00A2ARZCY/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=ICPON2ICI9B6&colid=M8EP83TJNGEY&psc=0 Like I said earlier, it just seems like you were trying to find reasons to stick with Klein. But because your "reasons" weren't logical and came from bias and nostalgia, anyone with common sense is going, "What? That's not right. That doesn't make any sense.", etc. It's fine that you like Klein, but don't try to make it look like they're better than Knipex or Wera, because they're not, and virtually ever other reviewer on KZbin agrees.
@nikolagoethe71427 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Apples to apples and Knipex/Wera will beat Klein all day long. As you say, search KZbin, most everyone agrees.

Knipex and Wera, and Klein and Channellock both have their place. You don't want to use your Knipex when holding a pipe while soldering or heating a part, or turning a rusted rotting pipe out from the floorboards, or your Wera (or Wiha) when turning out rounded-out screws. Channellocks, Kleins, etc. i.e. the lower quality/finish tools are good as "beaters" where you don't want to use (abuse) your expensive tools. Also, the chances of them walking off on you on the jobsite are lower.

I've done nothing special with them , just cutting 1/16 steel wire and bx. Also the knipex long nose bend like hell. Everything else in my kit is either klein or milwaukee. Nerver had any problem with both of them. Only thing I give knipex is there chanel lock are indeed great. But looking back at my 2 last cutter and my long nose I start to wonder on how long their going to last.

What do the cobras cost in the US? Here in Germany you can get them for about 15-20€.

You seem to be a patriot, this is quite alright when you do so🇺🇸! Just as an information: There are also Wera screwdrivers that can be used as a chisel, due to their steel core within the black-yellow handle. When it comes to Knipex pliers, its possible to choose from a range of different sizes, surface finishings and handles. I worked with Klein in northern American, respectable, but in my humble opinion, the variety of brands like Knipex, Wera, Wiha is ways larger. Quality might be an aspect that can be regarded in different ways, depending on how tools are used and how much their price is in certain markets. I am German, and I confess that I do like the power tools of Milwaukee, DeWalt is also seen amongst workers (besides Hilti, Bosch, Fein, Festo, and more specified brands for carpenters and other distinct jobs), we appreciate John Deere, New Holland, Case-IH besides Fendt and Claas, Fluke is one my favorite brand amongst multimeters and clamp meters and measurement devices, Ford sells cars all over Europe, often different series from the US market. American food, such as pulled pork or Pastrami are just great, there are lots of great musicians and movies from the U.S., brands like McDonalds, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Häagen-Dazs, Dairy Queen, Dunkin‘Donuts, Starbucks (nevertheless, I don’t understand why to pour deliciously fragrant coffee in a paper cup and why to put a plastic lid on it?!? “To go” is not my way) are globally successful, and it should not be disputed that the armed forces of your country are the mightiest and most capable all over the world. I love Levi’s (by the way, a German immigrant just as Klein) and Tommy Hilfiger. Tesla cars and apple gadgets are also very successful, besides google, amazon, PayPal, and here we just meet each other on KZbin, another American company. And there are beautiful places for having holiday, Miami Beach, LA (probably there have been only a very few airports that got an own song, LAX is one of them) , Malibu, the Florida Keys. So you can get my point; I am definitely not against the USA. But when it comes to hand tools, Gedore, Stahlwille, Knipex, Wera, Wiha, Ruko, and some more German and Swiss names, they are in my opinion the best ones of all available tools, there is some good stuff from Japan as well. Talking about cutters, have you ever seen or even tried the Knipex Twin-Force? This company is very forward-thinking. Furthermore, it’s just my opinion, I regard the metric system as more advanced. When people handle non-frequent sizes of drills or other things, sizes in fractions are rather confusing, while numbers can be immediately understood, I do prefer square millimeters for cross sections of wires, instead of AWG, because any unit needs not to be inverted before and after using it in formulas. But this is just my preference. When was for a job in Mexico, I asked my then-coworkers (who were equipped with Truper, Milwaukee, Stanley, Klein) what kind of gift I might bring them from Germany? Sometimes people wanted typical German sweets, like Milka chocolate, Haribo jellies, or the Swiss Victorinox pocket knifes, kitchen ware of WMF or Solingen. Those Mexicans said: “Porfa, tráiganos unas de las herramientas, de las pantalones y de la chamarra que tu tienes, para chambear mejor...”. So I got them gifts from Engelbert Strauss workwear, pliers from Knipex, screw drivers and ratchet kits from Wera. And they were just happy about it and even wore the jackets in their spare time.

Amazon. You can get them with chargers for cheap. 14500 is essentially a 4volt aa sized battery. Amazon or a vaping shop will have them and the chargers. Also some small flashlight use them so maybe a sporting goods place.

I’m personally not sold on Knipex, I’ve tried some out, and though decent, I didn’t see what the big deal was. I especially couldn’t justify the higher price tag. Most of what I have in my tool bag is tried and true Klein and Channellock.

I’m getting a pair of Knipex pliers but I definitely see your point I don’t see how their any better than Klein or Channel Lock I think people go way over board whenever it comes to Knipex making it out like their the best their good don’t get me wrong but there’s others that are just as good.

Agree with most of what you say but when working with pipe the cobras are over the top better in my hands.

He is an electrician, doesn't work with pipe. EMT isn't pipe

Carl McCoy I understand what you are saying and agree about EMT not being pipe. Glad you made your point but I think if you read what I wrote I said in my hands. I am glad to know you don’t use pipe for electrical though. For EMT I also think the cobras get a better bite in my hands but it’s rare I need that much bite but when I do it works out well for me.

From what I’ve heard/read, Klein’s are hard to beat for Linesman’s and diagonal cutters. I have a new pair of each coming. Can’t wait to test them out and compare the linesmans to my old inherited pair which still has plenty of grip and works flawlessly. Also looking forward to comparing the cutters to my 9.5” Channellocks and those rebranded NWS Irwins MD Lee clued us in on.

I like both and feel all 4 - Klein, Knipex Channel lock and Milwaukee are All apex brands really can't go wrong with any of them. My big belt and go-to pouch are all Klein, Channel lock and Milwaukee. I picked all 3 based on quality and price. I live the Klein journeyman series the grips are awesome. I feel that if you are going to build a go-to pouch the Klein J-215 multipurpose linemans are essential. They do just about everything in 1 set of pliers reducing number of tools in your pouch.

I love my Channel locks. Made in the USA and tired & true. The Knipex Cobras and Alligators are great, but I think the fill a different niche, despite looking so similar in function. It all comes down to the jaw design. The Channel Locks are great all-purpose pliers, while I thing the Knipex excel in handling round stock (like pipes).

Couldn't agree more about the import price. I'm in Australia, getting German tools like knipex is a pain because you have to find a tool shop that stocks them and even then the price is crazy. Ends up being cheaper for me to import them when they're on special but i always end up with channelock or whatever brands are generally stocked here

Have you tried the Southwire level. If there is one tool that they make that is actually worth a crap, it is that level. I absolutely love it.

Here on Canada, Channel Lock tools are way cheaper than Knipex tools. You can easily get 3 or 4 Channel Locks within the price of 1 Knipex plier. However, some Knipex tools are fancier and nicer for special applications, if you can afford them.

Really helpful. Thanks for sharing your expertise. Klein is the bomb. Never regretted a Klein purchase. When you say expensive screwdrivers on the way, I’m guessing SnapOn. My mechanic friend swears nothing compares. Somehow SnapOn screwdrivers have superior torque and he claims it sticks to the screw head. I’m waiting until I can justify buying them, but it’s on my list and I will. Still love Klein, will never be without them. I do love Knipex Channel locks. Owned all the brands, but their various line of channel locks are my favorite. But just my opinion. We all have our favorites. Thanks again, love an honest look through another’s eyes, specially a professional. My brother is a master electrician, 38 years, and Klein is his go to. He likes a few Knipex, but still favors Klein
@benningtoncamper28525 жыл бұрын
One big apples to oranges in your side cutter comparison is that the Knipex look to be 1000V rated, where the Klein are definitely not. It may also be that the Klein are not NFPA 70E compliant either without the bicolor insulation and hand guard... This may not matter to you, but it is a difference.

I agree with you, but the knipex pump/ alligator pliers are far superior than channel lock or any other brand for that matter.

You mentioned “sometimes it happens” in relation to beating on the end of your screw driver. I purchased about a year ago the Milwaukee demo screw driver I believe it’s called, cost $15-$20. I keep one in my OG veto bag (which is approximately 15 years old) and one in my Milwaukee pack out to stop me from beating on my expensive tools. Best investment in awhile, I beat my good tools no more.

Great video! Quick question..I'm in residential now..I hold true to Klein as well. But have you ever used Milwaukee long nose 48-22-3068? My Favorite for side jobs. For some reason Milwaukee discontinued them. Was being stupid and ruined mine cutting into a live wire I thought for sure was dead. Had to buy new off ebay..Was just wondering if you ever used them and what you think of them..Keep up the awesome videos!

Channel Lock GL6 is best of both worlds and made in USA. I'm a fan of old school T&B (orange and black) cutter/crimper, Masterforce 9 3/4" linesman and lastly a Bluepoint ratcheting multi-bit screwdriver.
