The landing is so epic with all the troops pouring out of the dropships and the flares being launched and the music just swelling up. Truely an epic D-Day landing which will be matched by it's epic failure in about 5 minutes.

@@welkingunther5417 Well in this situation nothing would help them anyway cause it was an ambush and the whole bug army was waiting for them. Tanks or whatever would get swarmed quickly plus they would have got a hard time moving in this terrain. Best tactics are shown in the middle of the movie - Airstrike, then infantry with nukes to clear the rest. Also Hoppers giving air support a hard time since they kamikaze into the planes as stated in the ST video game.

They have air support but cannot go to the planet thanks to the plasma fire, tanks cannot been deployed via orbital dropship because the crew would be cooked alived inside it and the enemy utilize underground tunnel that could trap a tank easy making it useless, flamers have no use against the bugs because their skim that is too thick, grenades and heavy weapons is a fair point, wait they have it but never used because they are praticaly recruits.

Essentially starship Troopers laid the groundwork for all sorts of science fiction combat related works and even real-life programs. Making a purist, high quality, moocho spare no expense mini-series would most certainly be the most fitting toast to sci-fi developments like the Halo Series, The alien and Predator series and perhaps even Avatar (though some marauder suit soldiers would easily kill one of those robot walkers lol)

Their enemies also have a limit to their numbers. The number of bugs are unending and their numbers make them hard to defeat. Also tanks would easily be trapped and destroyed through clever use of sinkholes sucking tanks in and these bugs can cut through metal like paper so a tank would be easily destroyed by a decent swarm of bugs. In the novel troopers do have exo skeleton armor and heavy armor but because of the low budget the movie had to settle for conventional helmets and light armor

I would of begun with a Orbital Bombardment to suppress the Plasma Bugs and to hopefully get an a no-go area for the bugs. Air support would then follow to drop guided nuclear missiles into anything that looked like a cave. Then the Infantry would drop with armour support and try and create a beachhead.

I agree, but for all intents and porpuses this operation was based on bad intelligence reports that sugested an easy victory due to the lack of organization between the bug population. The Federation overestimated the enemy and paid with heavy casualties. However since nobody ever really knew if the bugs launched the meteor that destroyed Buenos Aires, it could mean that the Federation false flagged that catastrophe, the massive failure of the assault on the bug planet could also be planned in advance since it would boost the hate of the civilian population and their seek for revenge. However even if the Federation nuked the planet back to it's early formation stage, the bugs would still survive in insane high numbers. For instance in the Second World War the US Navy carpet bombed entire islands occupied by the Japanese just to have their troops being blasted by almost all of the enemy soldiers that just waited inside their tunnels in the mountains until the bombing stopped.

Great film. But damn if they didn’t remember their training. Still one of the best sci fi deployments we’ve had. I’ve read enough to know that in fighting withdrawals you shouldn’t turn your back on the enemy, especially if they are faster than you. You usually withdraw by squads too, with one group stopping to provide overwatch whilst the other squads in the platoon sprint to the next position and swap out that cover fire. Another reason you’re drilled so hard is so that even under stress you can perform tasks without having to consciously think about them. But these guys just wanted to get the f out. And that’s fair enough I guess. Let’s not forget that the person that told them to remember their training was one of the first to die after all 😅

I think it would be cool of the standard Arachnid warrios carried a light plasma fireweapons. Like they could have a tail that is similar to the Scorpion bug. Also, instead of going all out as a wild swarm, they would use tactics and formations. It would make the bugs appear more intelligent and on pair with humans. They would use the grenadier bug as artillery and the scorpion as a offensive tank.

Well according the book, they had the power to render crystal with nuclear bombs the entire surface of planets. Unfortunately bugs live far below the ground, doing surface surprise attacks en masse so eradicate them is a bloody job like Klendathu explained. In The book at least created Nova Bombs able to crush planets ' core. Overkill Weapons like Death Star 's main cannon indeed, but able to turn the tides in favor of Humans

In fairness this was also before they learned how to properly down a warrior by aiming for the nerve cluster. It was only after this disaster that the Federation started properly studying the Bugs to figure out their weaknesses. They're dropping them by the dozen later on in the film.

To be fair, in the book this particular battle was glossed over but was noted as a defeat due to a lack of support from higher command - with the ranking general at the time dying on the ground with his men. Generously, this could have been the way Verhoeven saw it going down. Total lack of military competence aside, it does convey the message of loss to the audience very well.

@JeremyGSU like you'd see 3-5 infantry trying to shoot down 1 arachnid and it takes them like 10 seconds AT CLOSE RANGE. then you'd see watkins in his last moment killing or hurting a buncha bugs before he went BOOM. I think he had a "sniper rifle" but i think its the same morena rifle with just a scope. also i find it interesting that in SST1 they used bullets, SST2 they used some kinda lame lazer, in SST3 they switched back to bullets.

What was always morbidly funny to me is how the most gung ho of them, Shigumi, was yelling happily on the way, and running forward shooting while yelling, "You want some?! Here's some!" And he was the second one to get killed without having killed even one. And he gets mutilated almost more than any of the others who got killed.
