The motorcycle that carried the bicycle down to Baja Mexico in the ‪@motogeo‬ Bike on a Bike Adventure was the Kawasaki KLR650.
Here Jamie Robinson chats about the bike and gives you the low-down on this very affordable dual-sport machine.

In my opinion KLR should never change. It is the rare old school adventure bike. If somebody needs modern adventure bike, the market ih huge, but if you like something that works well for 30 years, proven workhorse, the KLR is the best choice. No changes for good old KLR.

This is my fourth KLR650. I keep coming back to it. Largely unchanged mechanically since 1987. Entry level? Yeah, right. They have been around the world, and have been in production for 31 years. If you want to know how much fuel/ range you have left, use your trip odometer.

I ride in Mexico and all I can say (and have said!) is "Thank god I'm on a KLR". Parts: easy to find, carburetor: easy to service, tires: available in most towns, tranny: bombproof, comfort: excellent, tools needed for any field repair: just a few. Drawbacks: someone at the factory forgot to properly attach the signal lights, the stock footpegs are scary when wet, no fuel gauge (but I've only run out once using the odometer and the reserve got me home). Along with the Honda XR650, the KLR is likely the best bike for exploring that backroads of Mexico. Make sure to get the SW-Motech engine guard as the stock fairing will take a beating when the bike is dropped.

Of course, the reason it is only $6499 is because it's old school and everything on it has been made for years. Bring in all that new tech as you suggest and the price would leap up to the $10K range. Then you're starting to approach Tiger800 territory.

If you need EFI, fuel sender unit, ABS... Tenere 660 is a good choice in this category. Personally I love everything about this bike and I think nothing should change. I hope Kawasaki Heavy Industries will not make any changes ever, except solving some minor issues in therms of making even more reliable motorbike.

im a proud 2011 klr owner,the fact that it is old shcool is awesome,you can get parts affordably and work on it your self and its all based on proven technology that basic tools can work on, its a great platform to customize, something a s simple as a fork stabilizer makes good improvements to the bike and there are 705cc engine kits available.,it is the the original all around modern dual purpose motorcycle for people that have to work not people that can afford to take weeks off at a time,it takes me anywhere on our off road locally,its much more comfertable than a dirt bike but not comfertable enough to be considering touring.there is no other bike that has almost 30 years service to militarys around the world,a 520 km range,a reputation for being relaiable,and the best tourque out of all the dual purpose bike,if you chain a slow klr 650 to another dual purpose most likely the klr will drag it away crying.

While you are right, this is a dated bike. That is why most of us love it. It never breaks and really if it ever does you can find parts on the cheap! You are also right that Kawi could make a dual sport that competes with companies like KTM And BMW and the like. I hope they don't hurt the KLR to make that bike, but I do hope they make it! Nice review, wish it's was so intertwined with your personal riding style, but hey each their own! Thanks!

+John Gill If modern "adventure bike" marketing makes it way into Kawi management, the revised KLR will be a 1000cc twin, weight 600lb, and cost 15 grand. I'm looking forward to the day when they smarten up and give us a 400-500cc bike with decent suspension that weighs 325lb, has a big fuel tank and costs less that $7000

I feel like if they bring in all the tech they're going to bring in the price tag as well...and that's really the best part about the KLR, the bang for buck. Also, I'll take a tap over a light any day of the week. Most lights come on too early and I have to guess how much gas I have left (and most of the lights aren't accurate)..with a regular petcock it starves, cuts, gets shaky, it's very obvious, the you switch it over and have a solid 30-50 left depending on the bike.

One thing I love about Jamie is that he's pretty transparent with his emotions. If he's not feeling something it's pretty clear. Highly doubt he's going to rock one of these in his garage anytime soon. But HUGE thumbs up for that bike carrier. I have a Yamaha FJ-09 now, but I'm contemplating getting rid of it and going "old school" with a KLR. I learned on a classic bike, choke and all. Love the simplicity of the KLR and want to learn how to maintain it myself. Would never attempt that with the FJ for fear of throwing electronics out of wack or neglecting to do that one thing that ends up frying something fragile. Anyone else get rid of a next gen bike and hop "down" to a KLR or other simpler, carburated bike?

This summer I rode a KLR 650 all through Canada - 25580km with almost no problems! The "more serious" one was that I lost one of the four screws holding the back frame, so you should use some screw glue before heading out for roads like the TransLabrador Highway. The only other two "problems": a broken headlight bulb and ONE flat tyre. Yes, one flat tyre on 25.580km!!! It's a shame that Kawasaki can't sell those bikes any longer in Europe, because of emission control issues with the aged carburated engine.

The KLR is the best bike in its price range. Its super reliable. Parts are plentiful and cheap. There are enough mods and farkles to keep a person busy for years. It is by far the best entry level dual sport out there. Great video by the way. I like the bicycle rack.

90% of bikes don't have fuel gauges - set your trip meter, a 6 gal tank like that with the KLR fuel consumption (like 60 on highway can get you 250 pretty well on the highway, probably 150 around town, take note of where it starts cutting and you got yourself a nice mark. On bikes I'll trust the trip over the fuel gauge any day.
@51Dss
@51Dss 10 жыл бұрын
I think the 6.1 gal tank kind of offsets the need for a fuel gauge - you should be able to go at least 240 miles on a full tank. If 6gal isn't enough to get you through to the next gas station they do make some really nice fuel cells that you can easily strap on with your other gear

I've been following you for a while now and I've grown to love your videos. But... (LOL) I think people have missed the mark on the KLR. The first MotoGeo videos I watched were for the Honda Africa Twin because I wanted one pretty badly until I started applying reality to my mindset regarding a third motorcycle in my garage. Why did I think that I needed modern tech for a large dirt bike when the simple KLR 650 (and Honda/Suzuki 650 dual sports) had been crossing the planet for decades? I bought a 2018 in yellow. Love the bike, it's brilliant for my purposes. Kawasaki, I love ya. I have an 02 ZZR1200 with over 60K miles on it and I was upset that you 86'd the mighty Zed but I have to say that you brought my friends a better bike in the ZX14 lineup.I'm hoping you do the same with the next KLR. I'll ride off, into the sunset on a couple Kawasaki Motorcycles and an Ultra Classic and be happy as a pig in mud... or is that my fun loving KLR?

I am an advanced rider and find the KLR a great bike! I take it on single tract trails regularly. But beware it is very heavy when you go to pick it up after a crash! I have never ran out of fuel. I click the trip meter when I fill up. If I run out after the reserve I just lay down the bike all the way on it's left side and and away I go!

For adventure all I would want or need is the little DR200 SE also a "dated" bike but you can take it on very narrow trails so light you could practically carry it away and it has 200+ mile fuel range. I hear what he's saying, but someone needs to make affordable, entry-level machines. I agree that the bike needs a gas gauge and was surprised that the bike was still carbureted, but I guess this stuff is what makes it possible for Kawasaki to keep that price competitive!
@starsunderer
@starsunderer 10 жыл бұрын
Suuure upgrade it, make it fuel injected, add electronics, ect, ect. then you will have higher costs, difficult maintenance, and reliability issues. Then you will have to start comparing it even more to BMW and other high end touring bikes, and it will likely not be as good of an option at the higher cost. You need to look at it as a nicer high end dirt bike that is sorta touring instead of a lower end touring bike. I just wish they would make a higher cc option from the factory or the military diesel version available. Id rather pay more for that. I commend Kawasaki for keeping it simple stupid and at this price point after all these years.

Great video! I think all of your comments on the KLR are fair and accurate. I have a 08 KLR that has seen many miles and many trips (65k on the ODO). I don't ride it as much as some of my other bikes these days (Such as the Ducati Scrambler you and Wes Siler inspired me to purchase) but I can't seem to bring myself to get rid of it. I have a 2013 KLR, a damn good all round bike, with the biggest problem being the doohickey (balancer chain tensioner), Kawasaki should have used the slipper tensioner method, just like Honda has for decades!!, simply backoff the 10mm bolt and release the nut behind it 1 turn, at idle, stop it, tighten them, job done, it should have got a fuel gauge in the 2008 remodel, and 43mm cartridge forks with adjustment, so you need to replace the springs, to stop the fork dive, so I would like to see a fresh injected 700 replace it to compete with the Tenere, get on and build it, KAWASAKI!!

I would click thumbs up for the KLR but since I'm rating the video and not the bike I'll resist thumbs down and not rate at all. You start of well enough stating the basic feature of the KLR - it's entry level priced at or near $6500.00 - then you went off complaining about its lack of more modern convenient features. You can get a Suzuki Vstrom with a lot of those upgrades/features but it comes in around $11000 or more - or you could go for the BMW dual purpose bike for closer to $19000 - the KLR is a basic, durable, Truly dual purpose machine - it's not a motorcross bike, and it's not a sport touring bike - if you need to travel maybe 100 miles or so to get to a destination where you'll be going off road for some camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, exploring...or just want to ride the trails this is your bike.

What is it like riding with the bike on the back? I saw one of these carriers on a motorcycle last week. I have a FZ1 so I am not concerned with the extra weight, just curious what it would be like splitting lanes on SoCal freeways, and how it reacts when at speeds above 60mph.

I just got a 2016 tHUMPER yesterday and the only things I wish it had would be ABS and Traction control. Maybe a little lighter would be good, it is a beast. Anybody know a good cheap simple to install alarm system for it?

+valhala56 Also note: The bike sounds like to me it has an engine with 100k miles on it. doesn't sound like any bike I have heard before. It doesn't bother me, I just find it interesting. I got the camo version, A lot of people don't like the camo, I like it because it looks like something somebody painted in their garage and I really don't want loud color that screams steal me. And I am a prepper, one thing nobody ever says about the carburetor, uh that means that if there is an EMP a KLR will still run, every-other pre 95 vehicle will be dead. Nobody ever talks about that. Bunch of idiots.

Yes, the KLR engine is very very noisy, is normall, a better exhaust like a pro-circuit will shut some noises, or make you forget about them... also.. Traction controll on a 35 or something BHP bike just not make it, maybe in a +70hp bike you will need it, but even in my 95hp Honda Varadero 1000 i need traction control...

Traction control is built into your right wrist, abs is built in too. You just have to refine it.

+Arthur Sayles Hey, Kawasaki doesn't try to advertise this bike as something it's not. It is what it is, an adventure bike, and for some people the basics is all they need to get it done.

I agree and disagree, some updates would be nice but at the same time it’s the motorcycle industry if they do a couple updates they’re gonna jack the price up and for 99% of the people out there it’s fine just as it is which is why people love it and it’s still a big seller. Everybody talks about cutting edge technology because it’s interesting to do in some sort of review or magazine article but the truth is most people want a simple comfortable easy bike that will get you there, they’re really not all that concerned with huge jumps and racing. There are definitely some improvements that could be made But I would rather have them leave it instead of trying to turn it into an overpriced adventure bike with a lot of electronic garbage you don’t really need and make it unattainable. There’s a reason people still buy this instead of the more advanced better quality bikes. This is just easier than a lot of them they’re simple they’re durable they have very low maintenance. I could buy the CRF 450 but then I have to rebuild it completely after 20,000 miles and change the oil every week and deal with a bunch of crap and pull the whole thing apart to work on it, bikes like this this is Zukey DR the DRZ the XR 650 L come on people of these bikes because they’re just simple motorcycles without a bunch of gadgets and electronics and other crap to break and maintain all the time. So I wouldn’t expect them to do this, they’ll have their adventure bikes and other models come out this has been serving its purpose for decades and they’re probably not gonna do much changing because they don’t really need to. That’s not gonna get them any rave magazine or web blog reviews but people still love them and keep buying them anyway

Thanks for the video,i am stuck deciding between the new KLR 650 or the New NC 750X any help please.Mainly adventure riding with long trips. Not heavy off roading.

Probably better off with the NC 750X then, the KLR is better off road, where as the NC seems more like a road bike.
