Good info Sir. Most cases birds are more sensitive to movements than sound. Another advantage by going alone (make sure of your safety as well) is you wont end up shooting same bird(s) in same manner as others.

For me I always keep at Manual mode, set the aperture at widest possible end, set Iso to Auto not jumping above 6400. Based on the light and needs, I change shutter only. It works like a charm.

Yes, you can use 1.4 TC. As you are already getting the advantage of crop sensor, 1.4 TC should be fine.
